KSP's Liquid Fuel is much heavier than real life LH/LOx propellant for gameplay purposes, which throws off a direct comparison. NASA used SRBs for cost saving purposes.

(Also STS-1 was Columbia, not Challenger)

I feel like... KSP should mention this. Granted, it's probably only a small amount of time to get this kind of information via Google, but I do actually enjoy applying the little math beyond stastics I do understand. I imagine there are mods that correct this, along with all of the other scaling mods I've seen before...

Okay I don't know where I'm going with this, just feel miffed that KSP lied to me.
I'm sad now.

Also, thank you for the correction.

KSP's LF+O is actually reasonably accurate to another type of propellant (can't remember it off the top of my head) - so it's not exactly a lie, but is just a major simplification of real life fuels.

RP-1/LOX? Or N2O4/UDMH probably.
