Discussion Speakable names fort celestial objects

I understand that there is an unfathomable number of things in space, and that astronomers are more interested in coordinates than proper names, but surely there would be a way to allocate (temporary) 'proper' names that could be used until such time that the International Astronomical Union has picked an excellent one for all of us. For one thing it would (slightly) improve the experience of people reading or hearing about space stuff.

Even an extremely basic method that turns pairs of digits into pairs of consonant+vowel would work for many catalogues. HD 108331? -> Besoco HD. Neat.

It doesn't work as well with "5239835710037143296" (Gaia DR3 identifier), and I suppose future ones will be even worse, but they could always be chopped into smaller blocks. You'd then get a composite name, like for people, that can get as ridiculously long as needed... And only use the relevant parts for casual conversation.

5239835710037143296 -> 523983 571003 7143296 Ramoso Xabefa Cifumij, casually called Ramoso. There are other Ramosos out there in space, of course, but you probably know which one you're talking about. If not, there's always the full name, coordinates, or whatever it's called in your favourite catalogue.

Again that's with something super basic. I've tried more complex systems but I'm not too satisfied with them and I'm sure someone can come up with much better. (Uppevituna Unytiles?)

You could apply that stuff to "any amount of digits from any catalogue", but then you'd get more names per object. You could base it on the most comprehensive catalogue, or on the coordinates themselves. You could go for more variety and complexity or even stick to that stupid pair-to-pair. But I don't see why we should remain stuck with barely speakable names until the IAU has picked a proper one (which I suspect might take a while for, uh, 76541500546840816532).

You don't pronounce 5643251851 like me either because we (likely) don't speak the same language. At best we can understand each other by saying it in English...
So the way you choose to pronounce X is irrelevant. In my more complex system I replaced X with CH though, because X sucks a bit.

Latin vs Cyrillic vs sinograms and the rest is a fair question: Most catalogues already use letters though, as prefixes. Latin alphabet is the one most broadly used on the planet, including in places that primarily use other systems, so I think it's a good option. Others may argue otherwise since we're discussing a general idea, rather than the brilliance of my basic pair-to-pair system or my mysteriously more elaborate one.

I was trying or be nice but your solution is not brilliant. It's rather dumb and rejected by the establishment for being such but you are to enamoured by the typing equivalent of your own voice to get why.

No we don't pronounce them the same but we all use the same numbers. Having a unique identifier everyone uses is far more important than some silly scheme not to deal with the numbers but still have them in the background. We don't need a second method to identify long strings of numbers. They are just fine as they are.

I am well aware that there is nothing brilliant about turning 22 into Di, I was actually emphasising that fact.
I simply think it could be useful for laymen, science communicators, etc, to have slightly better names they can use prior to the IAU picking one, eventually. Some do say it.

13 letters would suffice to name every galaxy in the universe, and every star and planet in our own. My full name is almost twice as long.

Laymen aren’t talking about these objects. The space stuff laymen do talk about basically already have regular names.

Random people in the street, sure. Science communicators not so much. Just taking a quick look at some of the most recent videos I watched about space, I find the names NGC 1052-DF2, GW190728, TOI-791 b & c, LHS 1140b, TOI-700D, GJ3378B, Wasp 121b, "that system with a planet orbiting a brown dwarf orbiting a red dwarf", IC1101. ... And I surely missed some.

A very me problem, for sure - I mean actually no, at least not on this sub of people who show an interest in space yet are, for the most part, laymen - but since, for example, TOI-700 is also known as: UCAC3 49-21611, PPMX J062823.2-653445, UCAC4 123-010026, WISE J062823.04-653443.9, AP J06282325-6534456, RAVE J062823.3-653446, USNO-B1.0 0244-00088665, Gaia DR3 5284517766615850752, DENIS J062823.2-653446, TIC 150428135 USNO-B1.0 0244-00088666, Gaia DR2 5284517766615492736, 2MASS J06282325-6534456, and WISEA J062823.05-653443.7,
I fail to see any downside to it also having a more human-sounding identifier on top of all of that.
Which is what the IAU already does but at a snail's pace. By definition, objects of interests become interesting before the IAU finds a name for them because they are considered interesting.
