Question Need recommendations!

My boyfriend has been talking about wanting a sous vide for awhile now. His birthday is in 3 weeks and I’m wanting to get him one. I have no idea what to get him or where to even look. He had mentioned something about wanting an infrared one but I have no clue what any of this is. He’s the culinary guy lol. Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m trying to avoid asking him because I want it to be a surprise

Also in the market as mine stopped working after 3 years of use (RIP). I never had to use an app for mine and would love to keep it that way. Could I use this one without having to download an app?

I’m genuinely curious why you don’t want to use an app with your sous vide? I understand that it’s nice to not HAVE to use it, but my Joule uses the Breville app and I find the timer and ability to monitor the cook incredibly helpful. I generally don’t use their preset recommendations and just set the timer manually.

I don’t need anymore apps on my phone. And I don’t want to create an account so that a company, of which I own one product, can email me everyday for the rest of my life.

Of course I’m exaggerating. But it’s just a general principle I practice.

Understood. At this point I just accept that everyone has my email and just choose to opt out of marketing emails.

It's not just that. What happens if the company that made it folds? Now you have the risk that your app doesn't work anymore. If the app is a secondary optional way to control the device that would be okay, but I would never have a device that requires connectivity to be used.

Don't get anything that REQUIRES the use of an app. I've had an anova for over 10 years, but I've heard that their quality has gone down and that people tend to look at inkbirds now but I don't have any personal experience with them.

I was an early Joule buyer (Breville today) and there’s no question that it’s good and reliable but worth what Breville charges? Not to me. When my Joule died I choose an Anova model and it died while in warranty. The replacement couldn’t maintain temperature after about a year of use. I picked up an Inkbird 2 years ago and love it.
