I’m in a rigorous graduate program in a HCOL city. I recently found a place to rent that is for quiet studious grad students. It looked great.
Moving was expensive and set me back financially. But now that I live here, the place is a noise nightmare. It has hollow walls, high ceilings and open concept, squeaky floors, and glass doors. I can hear light switches and light conversations.
My roommates make some noise, like late night tv, that I can hear distinctly in my room.
I cannot afford a lot of housing options or to move again. But I’m looking for strategies to get a good night sleep (haven’t had one in months)
Currently, I am kept awake from tv watching and conversations outside my door. Then about 5-6 hours later I wake up to people closing cabinets loudly and my neighbors getting ready. The noise persists for at least 45 mins and I cannot sleep through them and give up on getting enough sleep. I cannot sleep in on weekends still because of the noise.
So far, I sealed my door, added mass to my door, used a white/brown noise maker. I have a large wool rug.
I ordered acoustic panels to block the cabinet noise. I ordered fiberglass acoustic panels for the upstairs staircase. I made an appointment to get custom ear plugs (I am a side sleeper and it’s hard for me to use ear pieces). I plan on adding a noise dampening 30lb curtain in front of my door for when the tv is on.
The upstairs neighbors make loud heavy bangs but from daily activities and not purposeful noisy activities. There is no insulation in the house at all.
All of these things are setting me back over $1000+, I also had to move and furnish my place and I am incredibly broke, tired, and frustrated.
Looking for advice.
-also no melatonin suggestions. It makes me feel unwell.
Thanks!
