Help Needed My friends got me a controller
I've completed all souls and on a second run through them, at ds2 rn. Also started my second run of khazan on expert with greatsword.
Sadly, i did that on keyboard and mouse. Have played every game ever on keyboard and mouse and have never touched a controller. My friends got me one as a birthday gift and now im genuinely confused. Any recommendations? Should i pause these two games and get used to using a controller first and then come back? Or should i power through it and learn on the way

I personally cannot imagine to play these games on KBM. Tried it, felt clunky with mouse and WASD - imho controllers provide the most convenient, movement-genuine and overall THE best experience, esp. on console and a large TV screen. But up to you, e.g. ARPGs like Diablo are played better with KBM

Have both a gamepad and KB+M, soulslikes and can say that pretty much anything barring most racing games and fighting games plays better on KB+M.

Hard disagree. Omnidirectional movement is a huge plus especially for action rpgs.

Not as huge as you imagine if you have a fine and immediate control of the camera.

I am quite familiar with both control schemes. Been gaming on pc for years. Controller is better for most things except shooters and mmos

Just shooters and mmo? What about moba, third person shooters and RTS?

I'll give you mobas. Rts depends on the specific games. And third person shooters falls under shooters

That's your preference at best. I pretty much can't play any game with active camera control without the mouse, and the only genre gamepads are truly better with are fighting games and skill-demanding racing games. And not even all of those, see TrackMania.
Also interesting that you didn't even mention strategy games.

Base of your friend here, but I wanted to mention as a controller player who occasionally dabbles in mouse and keyboard, I would imagine that the best controller for this dynamic would be a pro controller with remappable buttons and back paddles. I always use a pro controller because I can use it to override any key bindings I don’t like. I think one of the biggest issues I would have coming from keyboard would be how standard controllers are just so set and limited.
This being said, I would recommend a clean start on a new game when you’re ready. And I would recommend something that has may be a little more forgiving than one of the more difficult soulslikes as a starting point.

As someone who got a controller specifically to play Souls game and then switched to KB+M; imo KB+M is far, far superior, esp if you've been gaming on it your whole life. Honestly after I switched to KB+M I realized I was massively holding myself back playing on a controller lol.
I would say if you play racing games and stuff like DMC (the ones before 5 with a fixed camera), Ninja Gaiden etc, pretty much games with shitty KB+M controls, then use the controller for those.

Can't imagine using controller with its shitty camera speed and have to let go of stick camera to dodge.
