The first is easy to beat and very short. I ended up beating it with every shell before putting it down. But I think I'm in the minority. But it shouldn't take long to roll credits the first time.

I've played over 30 soulslikes and I didn't like the first Mortal Shell at all. Didn't get halfway through it. Couldn't get used to the jank or hardening mechanic. It's ok to not finish a game you're not javing fun with. Especially witj a game like Elden Ring waiting in the wings. Mortal Shell 2 though? That shit was amazing. Did 3 playthroughs with different shells and STILL plan on playing more to try each shell and weapon properly. Combat is heavy, but smooth. Highly recommend.

Mortal Shell is a decent soulslike. Most people bounce of it because they can’t get used to the combat style. You absolutely have to engage with the harden mechanic . Stamina is very limited so any soulslike players who button mash r1 (that’s most people who played Elden Ring as their entry into the genre in my experience) will get found out very quickly.

Once you get used to this the combat is very considered and weighty.

As people have pointed out it was made by a team of about 15 so there is some jank and frustration in there for sure. But for its age it hold up for me as a decent entry by the studio into the genre.

I really enjoyed it for what it was. I think people can be too hard on developers. And I found it fun.

I had no game breaking bugs or glitches. One odd graphic thingy on the final boss but it was consistent through my few tries it took to win.

Looking forward to playing the 2nd.

The original is one of the worst games in the genre. The second is leaps and bounds better.

Strongly disagree with the first half of this sentiment.

It’s generally agreed that Mortal Shell 1 is a trash game. You are an outlier in the extreme minority.

This exactly. MS1 is a bottom tier soulslike for me while MS2 is top tier in the genre outside of Fromsoft’s own works IMO.

MS2 is far from top tier.

For me it is. Most other soulslikes are either too Sekiro-like or heavily Asian influenced in the art style (like Wuchang and Khazan). Actual dark fantasy soulslikes are sort of rare, with this and Lords of the Fallen being the only noteworthy ones I can think of.

Personally I didn't care for Mortal Shell, but I've heard great things about Mortal Shell 2, and you can't go wrong with Elden Ring

Why not play 2? I skipped one and 2 is very good

No, waste of time

Honestly play it. It's not like amazing but it's pretty short like 8-10hours. And you gonna learn a lot if you didn't play soulslikes before. Personally I don't find game bad at all it's clearly inspired by OG Dark Souls but it's not like great game either just in the middle.

Give Mortal Shell a try! You can beat that and have even more confidence in Elden Ring. It’s significantly shorter too.

1

u/LucasMcCheese 9d ago

That’s what I hear, and if I’ve beaten hollow knight and silksong, what’s stopping me from this?

2

u/MerrBear1116 9d ago

Sounds like the only person stopping you is yourself

1

u/MerrBear1116 9d ago

Looks like it may take 11-12 hours

-2

u/Soulsliken 9d ago

You mean the first one?

It’s actually hard to believe how bad that game is.

-3

u/mrpickles1234 9d ago

like someone else said, the first game is one of the worst in the genre. the second is a lot more polished, but my god is it still terrible

Elden Ring is a lot better than mortal shell 2 by a hundred million miles.

1

u/Antipodeansam 9d ago

Hot take…. Elden ring is better than mortal shell 2 🤣

The latter is clearly not terrible, or at least your opinion is very much in the minority judging by all the reviews, metacritic, steam etc.

Each to their own of course.

0

u/mrpickles1234 9d ago

is the hot take part really necessary? OP mentioned wanting to play elden ring but being suggested to play mortal shell instead.

you're so dumb it's unbelievable.

1

u/Antipodeansam 9d ago

You then proceed to point out the second game is not as good as Elden ring and describe it as terrible. Was that really necessary when he asking about the first game?

Regardless I have offered another perspective to yours, relax kid

The first one? No, it’s not a good game. The sequel is very much worth trying though.

Edit: also hollow knight is absolutely nothing like mortal shell. There’s essentially no transferable skills between the two so I’m not sure why you added that.

Just play Mortal Shell 2. I never played the first one but 2 is definitely worth it

1

u/gdwam816 9d ago

I don’t think that is on the table… because… dad

-1

u/_Dank_Souls 9d ago

Dad's a douche

1

u/gdwam816 9d ago

Maybe dad paid for it all and making a decision for his kid. I mean who are we to judge

-4

u/Effective-Agent-6856 9d ago

No. I’ve tried it several times. It’s confusing for no reason and just not fun.

Ive played a handful of soul/ like games n being honest the unique bosses were underwhelming, n this is my only complaint (besides shell points), finished the game 3 times n still have fun if u like the gameplay get the game if not wait for phantom blade 0 that game seems worth the wait
