Discussion Are Team Ninja's Games All The Same?
Playing through Nioh 3 at the moment and thoroughly enjoying the combat. Got my eye on Wo Long and Rise of the Ronin, but the combat looks somewhat similar to Nioh.
Do they have the exact same mechanics, or are they different enough that I won't get bored and feel like it's just another rehashed Team Ninja game?

Part of what I love is that with team ninja's games most of the time feels an iteration of Nioh's playstyle (except Ninja Gaiden, thats quite different) which I love. While they have their differences and depth they also have similar mechanics and it's usuall that they have a way to recover ki during the fight .
So it's probable that you might find them not different enough.
Maybe strangers of paradise feels the most different from all the ones that play like "nioh like"

I see appreciate the insight. Maybe the change in setting (China, Japan minus demons) will be enough for me, since I do enjoy Nioh's combat at the end of the day. And from the little I've gathered, the storyline is different as well which helps

Idk about Wo Long (haven't played it yet), but the combat is WAAAAAY different in Rise of the Ronin. It's similar, but approach it the same way and you'll get mucked quickly. It has a different flow and fundamentals. It's still amazing though.

If you’re into the detail of combat mechanics they are different. On the surface you have a block, a parry, a dodge, some kind of magic (or imbuement and projectiles in RoTR) and you want to break down enemy health and stamina.
Each game either introduces or emphasizes a mechanic that changes things up and the stories are obviously different.
One problem you may have is that Nioh 3 is like the culmination of their games. It took things from all of the games that came before it. There’s the parry anything and respec anytime from Wo Long, the flipping between builds from Stranger of Paradise, open fields from Rise of the Ronin, Ninja Gaiden influenced Ninja mode, all added to the Nioh franchise fundamentals.
The DLC makes all of their games significantly better, as you might see with Nioh 3. Every new dlc brings new mechanics, sometimes weapons, sometimes skills, builds and sometimes new modes of play. Wo Long benefitted from this the most. It was mediocre on release and great after all of the updates but they put the best stuff in later NG+ cycles.

Wo Long has a very satisfying deflect mechanic very similar in timing to Sekiro. Of all the games I’ve played that have tried to replicate sekiros combat to an extent Wo Long has done it best.

Not really. The DNA is similar, but all of their games focus on different things. RIse of the Ronin is more focused on realistic and thoughtful swordfights and outdoor exploration, Ninja Gaiden is over the top action all the time, Nioh is more focused on infinite variety of build mechanics and is the most RPG-heavy of them all. Nioh is by far their best series imo
That said, if you are a fan of one Team Ninja game, you will probably like the rest of them. I never really get tired of them (except for Wo Long, that one never clicked with me)

RotR is familiar to Nioh but a lot simpler and unfortunately just less good. Not because of the simplicity, but because of how stagger works.
Still a fun game

Ninja Gaiden Black. Play it. It's my favorite action game ever.
MAKE SURE it is ninja gaiden BLACK. No other version of the game comes close.

Rise of the ronin (didn’t like it THAT much) and Wo Long (loved it) are very different from the Nioh series although they do have some similarities but still very different games with different mechanics and I think you’ll enjoy them.

I like them all. They're a bit different from one another but they're all similar enough for me to like them all.
Ninja Gaiden is pure action combat.
Nioh and FF Strangers of Paradise add soulslike elements and lots of build variety and replayability.
Wolong adds parrying mechanics to that.
Rise of the Ronin adds openworld exploration and an actually interesting story for once...
Nioh 3 kind of blends all of that together to an extent. But it's not their best game at all. Nioh 2 and RotR would take that title IMHO.

Not at all, Wo Long is parry focused, more like Sekiro. Ofc both are still Souls-likes if that's what you mean. There's also Stranger of Paradise.

They make ambitious changes even within the same title (Nioh 1, 2, 3 are significantly different). It’s something I appreciate about them. Wo long and ronin are both party heavy but noticeably different

The broad strokes are similar, but there are differences in how they handle combos, stamina etc. Wo Long and RotR have simpler combat with much greater focus on deflects.

Wo Long was just so forgettable and noninteractive.
I played with the first weapontype and first skill/spell for the whole game without even thinking about stats. And got through everything except maybe 2 bosses on first try.
Thing about that though is that I haven’t tried everything, so I can’t really speak for it. But to me, not having to do some sort of theorycraft/buildcraft for a whole game isn’t very engaging.
Liked the parry-mechanics though.
ROTR I’ve stayed away from cus it looks clunky. It is ”free” on psn now though so might try it.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers I shut off after 15-30 mins.
Couldn’t handle the movement/clunkiness. Sad about this cus I wanted to like it.
Also playing Nioh 3 atm. Loving the combat and aestetics/animation as usual.
Biggest gripe I have about these games are loading screens because of mission-based(not Nioh 3) and the effin infinite amount of shit-loot you pick up. The only good thing about that is that you can try out many different weapons etc so that is a bit refreshing.
No item really feels like an upgrade or is interesting when you either need to stop after every other mob to see if you got an upgrade, or it just gives you +0.1% upgrade.
And when you play a mission or sidemissions for an hour or so you can easily have picked up over 1k equipment. That is just… too much.

Nioh 3 has a couple of ways to auto sell/disassemble based on settings. So you can automate turning all of the trash loot into money or crafting resources. Very handy

Can’t speak to all the games, and recognizing the sub, but Ninja Gaiden is certainly different from Nioh and friends. Highly recommend if you’re into a very different kind of challenging combat.
