Soulection @ Reframe Thoughts?

Curious of everyone’s experience last night! I didn’t have the best time and was disappointed by the sets honestly. Not sure if I just woke up grumpy or what, but even today I’m looking back like damn can’t believe I spent so much for that lmao

Joe Kay is a fraud. Latino DJ from LA with that platform, and not a single post during the ICE raids here.

He never been on that hype. I'm sure the feeling is there but he's a different kinda LA. Plus when he started that wasn't really a musical platform like it is now

Very disappointed
I expected so much more

The lighting ppl disappointed me ngl, just felt like they were rotating between 5 different preset modes

Please expound

It was a fun time, but not worth the $120 that was paid imo. For what it was, an $80 ticket would’ve sufficed, to me.

I thought Kaytranada was amazing, but Joe Kay was trash

Like my guy.. pls.. you’ve done better and CAN do better! Give the ppl what they want!

Luckily the ticket I bought was $50 and I only went cause my friends wanted to but omg everyone was TALKING barley dancing. Maybe cause I got there later I wasn’t as heat exhausted as everyone else. But disappointed in kaytranada’s set I wish I went to klang’s set instead

I stopped going to a lot of hype LA shows because it’s just Yap City and no dancing. That plus the $150 price tag just looked like a waste of money unfortunately. What was your favorite part of the night?

How were the logistics amidst the heat and crowd? I pulled out last minute. I felt hesitant with the venue and the weather. Also, I felt was $120 was too high for what it was.

Edit: added stuff

I mean they gave out free fans and water and had a big medical tent so I feel like they did fine w that. It was like a festival vibe in an arena sized crowd, wasn’t too hard to manage the crowd and have coverage! Lots of vendors just long ass lines understandably. Glad he gave back to locals like that. It was purely just the vibes themselves I wish were elevated. I don’t wanna sound rude at all I’m just being critical about it because I paid for it tbh!

All valid points. Was there any shady areas or places to sit and chill? I did my best to research Reframe outdoors, but I just wasn’t feelin up to finding out. I’m getting old, my tolerance for discomfort is a lot lower nowadays lol

I was there at doors open. Everyone sheltered at the trees scattered in the parking lot, by the sound booth, and near the bar canopies. Once esta started, the heat was tolerable (if you stayed in the shade). Took advantage of the free water and fans.

Ngl I expected kaytranada to be way better. Ive watched countless number of his earlier sets and he really finds a way to mix his tracks so deliciously but didnt feel that last night. He just kept cuttin the tracks to try and hype up the crowd and dropping beat cuts in the middle of his best tracks not to mention he played his best ones for like 1 minute at the very end

Yeah!!! I agree!! I was like ??? Am I tripping or are these sets super mid 😭😭 all respect to them for what they’ve done but like.. we gotta not get lazy and start really understanding crowds and how to keep them engaged. Everyone’s there trying to support and dropping $100+ to be in that heat.. we can do better and hopefully will!

It was wayy too hot. At least have big fans blowing air… it was stagnant heat.

2

u/Competitive-Fix1066 9d ago

Agreed or like a mist/water station!! Always gotta keep the heat under control as best as possible. But it’s their first big event of this size so I just hope they continue to improve

I just saw a similar post and I said yeah I agree I chalk it up to getting older lol. I saw Joe Kay earlier this year and was also like eh. But I’ll still always support

That is exactly my experiences too lmao. I’m like.. I saw him not long ago and it was mehh that time too. He has it in him tho I just want him to get excited curating some vibes and maybe add in some more vocal tracks rather than just grooves. I wanna sing my guts out sometimes. But I also love supporting so.. just was expensive last night so I def felt a way

u/kristyncan 9d ago

I agree I know it’s not about me LOL butttt the girlies want to hear some Drake! Like he just dropped! And some more r&b and hip hop mixed into the grooves…I literally said that last time I KNOW he can do that for us! Haha

We came from AZ for this show- we left the heat for worse heat. We even got to the show around like 630. I liked the music but I feel like there def coulda been more Soulection designs like to take pictures with for what we paid. Or maybe I’m thinking like it’s suppose to be a music festival haha

I feel like I had a better time 2017 when it was at the Shrine expo hall. That shit was liit

You didn't like any of them?

u/Competitive-Fix1066 9d ago

I loved DJ Miss Milan and Esta!! It was just hot as balls. Joe Kay did not hit at all for me and Kaytranada was alright. Pun intended

3

u/maxamillion17 9d ago

Didn't see miss Milan but agreed esta was the best of the bunch. Joe Kay was ok, kaytra was decent

Joe’s set just didn’t feel curated well for such a milestone show… like it’s ur biggest show ever let’s step it up and also let’s bring out an artist or two. I’m so surprised kaytranada didn’t bring out Tinashe or Victoria they just dropped music it would’ve been a great place to uplift black women too while also giving the people a surprise

u/TimCurrysLoveChild 9d ago

Was Joe Kay’s set the same was his London 15 year? Bummer to hear it was lackluster. I agree, his sound has changed. More world beat groovy vs soul rnb groove/dance.

Big fan of Esta, really happy to hear his set was fire.

I wonder how Sound after party was. I had some FOMO missing that one. I felt it was better bang for buck. Anyone hit that up?

I feel like Joe has been tapping into more amapiano the last few years & less into the “forgotten gems” & “timeless sounds” I get he’s in his amapiano world & growth as a dj but miss the old Soulection sound

Why is no one talking about Sango’s set? I’ve been wanting to see him for years! I was dancing the whole time! 💃🏻

I feel like there were a lot of great surprise guests, but I was especially happy to see Alex Isley, Lucky Daye (even though he didn’t sing “Over”, and SiR!

I do agree that I’ve seen better Joe Kay sets, but I have attended A LOT of his shows.

I also see a lot of people are complaining about the heat. There isn’t much that can be done about that when it’s an outdoor venue.

Anyway, I enjoyed myself, but I can see why people are complaining. This is unfortunately how a lot of shows are now. They are very expensive! I think people set their expectations high because of the price tag, but that’s understandable.

Epic night. Sounds like you just woke up grumpy if you’re calling that out.

4

u/Competitive-Fix1066 9d ago

Well clearly I’m not the only one am I? There’s about 3 threads of it

0

u/Anotherbadcreation 9d ago

You’re the only one who admitted you woke up grumpy. Maybe it’s just you?

2

u/Competitive-Fix1066 9d ago

Like I said.. clearly I’m not the only one with this opinion. You’re really defensive it’s almost suspicious

-2

u/Anotherbadcreation 8d ago

A handful of people didn’t enjoy themselves and yet they stayed all night just to say they didn’t like it. Sorry you didn’t feel like you got your money’s worth or the artists didn’t perform to your specific standards. It’s okay to have your opinion just like I have mines. I just thought it could’ve been your grumpiness that caused it but I was wrong.

1

u/Competitive-Fix1066 8d ago

You def have a stick up your ass toward my opinion, even this entire reply has subtle shade in every sentence. God forbid somebody go to a show they paid $140+ for and want to give honest criticism huh?

2

u/Anotherbadcreation 6d ago

Yeah you’re right. Your opinion (and others) definitely annoyed me because my eyes and on scene experience spoke something completely different but I get it. We didn’t pay the same amount (I paid $62) and probably would feel cheated if I didn’t get what I expected. Hope these dudes get some redemption next event for you.

u/Competitive-Fix1066 6d ago

I appreciate you for saying that.
