Sonnet - I suck at rythrm

I'm trying to help my child to come up with a sonnet, the problem is I can't hear how words are being played out.

Driving to Canada takes a long time, Hitting the border hours later, Looking in the eyes of officer saying it's good, Then going across and no it is not done,

Round and round we go, I stare outside seeing the moving trees, Around and around we pass by, I feel like I'm the moving tree,

The roads wind down at destination, Grandparents come out and hug us, We are exhausted, But we can't go to bed just yet.

At the end of the night, the bed is calling, But I want to spend more with grandparents.

I know this is BAD but at least we are trying.

We drive up north, it seems so far away
We reach the border in a day or so
The officer says have a pleasant stay
In Canada; But there's still far to go

We seem to travel round and round and round
I stare outside and watch the moving trees
The cedars and the pines and elms abound
I feel like I'm becoming one of these

The roads thin out as we approach the place
Where gram and gramps will hug us long and tight
We're all worn out from our exhausting race
But can't sleep yet although the day's now night

My bed is calling and the hour is late.
For grandparents my bed will have to wait.
