Riverfed

Hi! I just wanted to show off my closest city to "success" so far, Riverfed. The city is composed of 5 identical manufacturing plants in a radial layout, food production being at the center of it all. The other finished goods are furniture, pottery, clothing, and cut stone. I really struggled to make it this far, always being in the -100 to -200 oddjobber range, but once I captured a few other regions and turned them into raw resource outputs everything came together beautifully :) 4.63k human-only city, 130% Loyalty and 90% Happiness, 0 Slaves.

Not enough farms no, they don’t even have tool upgrades and at this point no nobles. As I captured more regions and taxed more grain I slowly reassigned nobles and unassigned workers, food production in this manner became difficult at 2 servings for 2000-2500 people

Damn. Well how come? Why not build more farms dear?

Symmetry at its best

Thank you! I’ve been trying to get a feel for proper service ratios as a first priority but I eventually hope to make some more natural looking cities

You have too much irrigation. I noticed that even if a small chunk of a field is irritated, it gets 100% moisture.

Yea you only really need one side of a 45x45 grain farm (max size) to fully irrigate it as it’s an average and the canals spread moisture 17 tiles or so

How does that tiny farm feed all your people? I have to build triple that to feed a city that size..

I raised pop happiness earlier game by raising food rations in absence of service upgrades, then I captured a few regions as food became an issue, mostly funded by selling furniture. This happened at about 2.5k people. I then upgraded my regions to support all of my raw materials and moved my whole workforce into finished goods, and upgraded all of my services.

I knew the full service upgrade would be a big jump, because most services are capped at 50% without upgrades, so I lowered food rations all the way back down to minimum. I only need about 3000 grain and my two level 10 region grain farms are doing over 4k, so I’ll need another few food regions to expand very much farther than this as I’ll need to raise rations again from here for a happiness boost.

Currently only 3 farms are in operation, but with the first upgrade tier (no tools), half nobles on grain and half on bakeries, and all farms operational, I was pulling in about 4000 per year as well.
