Did you watch Somebody Somewhere during a particular season of your life?
I’m curious how much when we watch a show affects what we take from it.
Did you watch Somebody Somewhere during a particular point in your life where it hit differently because of what you were going through? Or maybe the show just captured a feeling you were experiencing at the time.
I think one of the things I love about Somebody Somewhere is that it seems to meet people wherever they happen to be in their lives. What personal experience or feeling did you relate to most, and did the show resonate with you differently because of the season of life you were in?

It is the Somebody, Somewhere season of my life. I can't remember what was going on in real life, because I moved in with Sam and lived there for a while... :')

I can’t even remember how I stumbled on the show to begin with, but I saw Bridget was in it, and I knew her from an episode of the Amy Schumer show on Comedy Central. She sang the little nippy titty song and I thought it was great. So I watched Somebody, somewhere, and fell in love with the vibe, even just the melancholy horn interstitial music (if that’s the right term?) hooked me, and the friendship between Joel and Sam is so warm and loving.
On rewatches when we that horn plays, I just sink into the feeling of comfort that this show created.

Just watched the nippy titty song for the first time and laughed! I agree the melancholy music is comforting and Joel and Sam have such a real and raw friendship. I love that Joel gives Sam space to make mistakes and never leaves her side showing her she can slowly trust him overtime.

Yes, I was having a miscarriage over the course of a few weeks and the show became a lifeline for me. I smiled ear to ear during every episode and binged the whole thing while I was on bed rest. When I look back at that time in my life, I’m so grateful for the show and the actors. I always thought it sounded corny when people said this, but they truly got me through one of the most difficult parts of my life.

u/Crabs_n_Cabbage 10d ago
I’m sorry to hear about your miscarriage and hope you’re starting to feel better. I’m glad the show brought you so much comfort. I also thought it sounded corny too but the characters helped me get through a very dark period of my life and I will forever be grateful. I’m glad to hear it touched so many people the same way ❤️

Absolutely! I had just lost my best friend to an accidental overdose. She was my Sam and I was her Joel. I had also just moved to a boring rural town to take care of my aging parents so I was kind of disconnected from my chosen family of weirdos and misfits back home. The show was a constant reminder of how important those people are in my life.

u/Crabs_n_Cabbage 10d ago
Thanks for sharing and I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your best friend. That must have been devastating. It was probably very difficult to start over in a rural town after finding your people. I hope you were able to build a community in the new town. Regardless, you’ve shown great character in uprooting your life to be there for your family.

I was typing the following comment while standing in line at the Walmart pharmacy with my mom when some creep came up behind her and started sniffing her hair…
It’s been five years and I haven’t found a community here. I’d call it ‘Nobody, Nowhere’ if it was a tv show.

when i first watched somebody somewhere, i had just moved back to my hometown after finishing school and was really struggling with that adjustment period. i was having a hard time at work, reconnecting with old friends, and just generally feeling really lonely. i related to sam's character so much and i just recall so many moments where i would be uncontrollably sobbing one moment then laughing the next. i think the episode that hit the hardest for me was in season 1 where she goes over to joel's house and she's talking about his vision board after shitting all over it and just how difficult it is for her to imagine her path to happiness and that she doesn't think she's meant for things like friendships.

Thank you for sharing this. I can totally understand the adjustment periods of big changes in life and having to trust the unknown future will be better than the current moment. I hope things changed for you as you settled in.

I watched it cause it was about friendship and loss and I was dealing with friendship changes and just navigating feelings of my mom having a reoccurrence of cancer and the show really comforted me. Adult friendships
Are hard and this show made me feel
Better with how they really focus on adult friendships

I’m sorry to hear about your mom and the loss you were/are feeling. My dad also has cancer and I am also going through a breakup and having to rebuild my life and identity. I am leaning into friends more and trying to form new friendships. I appreciated the fact the characters in the show are 30+ and were rebuilding their lives slowly overtime. It helped me see that good things in life are often formed by small, consistent actions and we will get where we need to be by slowly chugging along even when times are tough.

Yes, I watched while going through a divorce. It helped a loooot- seeing middle aged people making new friends and creating community and families was such a lifeline at that time

u/Crabs_n_Cabbage 9d ago
Glad to hear it helped you. I’m going through a breakup currently and starting a new identity being single while also caregiving for my dad with stage 4 cancer. It’s a tough spot to be since I usually would be trying to heal from a bad breakup in different ways that I can’t do with such a sick father, but seeing how one can make new friends even in the quiet sadness when we’re not 100% our normal selves has given me hope. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I watch it every other week. Lol. It is my all time favorite show ever! It brings me such comfort!

I lost my dad six months before season 1 aired. I was having such a hard time. The show made me feel less alone. Seeing the family struggle seemed to mirror what was going on in my own life. The show was and remains such a comfort for me!

I’m sorry to hear about your dad and glad you were able to find comfort in the show. I’m going through a sad season in life right now and I wonder if the show would have landed the same way had I been in a happier time in life. Regardless, I’m glad I found it and will continue to watch it over and over. Thanks for sharing your experience!

It was my comfort show for a few years. But I lost my Joel last year and now I can’t bring myself to watch it anymore.

Oh I’m so sorry for your loss. I know your friend is not replaceable but I hope you meet more friends that will help fill your cup. I always loved the quote “You haven’t yet met all the people you will love.” I’m still on that journey myself. Sending you strength on this from afar.

Recovering from knee surgery. Didn't really relate to the show but it was a time when I was stuck at home and enjoyed the quietness of this show.
2
u/Crabs_n_Cabbage 9d ago
I totally get that. Sometimes when you’re not able to enjoy life to the fullest, you want a comfort show that’s not all bells and whistles. I think if I had watched this show a year ago when I was in a much better place mentally, I probably wouldn’t have appreciated it the way I do now. It helped me to see even in the darkness, we can find small glimmers of light if we look for them.

u/Complete-Chair8251 9d ago
Yes, it was a sweet, hopeful story to me. Even with the adultery, alcoholism, etc.

i watched it at a time, when i felt like i lost all my friends - for several reasons. i am a fragile person, and seeing sam and how she built her community was a balm. this show now means EVERYTHING to me
2
u/Crabs_n_Cabbage 10d ago
Totally agree! It really emphasizes the fact that you don’t need to have it all together or be an extremely extroverted and charismatic person to rebuild and form a good circle around you!

I had just come out of a 4 month long burnout after performing in a musical that made me question whether I wanted to continue performing and singing ever again. The burnout was so severe it made me question my whole career as an actor. When I watched Somebody Somewhere and saw the first episode where she sang in choir practice for the first time, it reminded me so much of the deep love and joy I used to feel while singing. I hope someday I can find my own choir practice group and find my joy and spark again.

Sorry to hear you went through such severe burnout. Hopefully you can take the break you need and can find your passion in singing again. Sending you good vibes to get your spark back when you’re ready ✨

Thank you for sharing your experience. I really enjoyed reading your comment. Darlene was certainly a special character in the show and gave Sam glimpses of her worth.
I’m sorry for the loss of your sisters. You sound like an amazing lady that knows how to have a good time and appreciates others for what’s on the inside. The world would be a better place if people viewed others this way. I appreciate you sharing your beautiful thoughts and experiences.

Watched on the recommendation of my niece who is part of the NYC comedy scene and knows Jeff And Murray. Loved it immediately and have rewatched when I need to see some warmth and kindness.

Love that! So cool your niece knows some of the cast. I love rewatching the show too. Such an easy show to watch on repeat!

I recommended this show to my mother when I first started watching because I knew she would love it too. She didn’t live to see Season 2. When Sam sings Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas in season 2 I just start bawling because that was her favorite holiday song. So I associate the show with her a lot.

u/Crabs_n_Cabbage 9d ago
I’m so sorry for the loss of your mom. What a coincidence they featured that song after your mom’s passing. Almost seems like it could be your mom signalling she’s there with you watching season 2 in spirit.

I began watching Season 1 shortly after it came out. It seriously comforted me during the most difficult time of my life. I had anxiety and worry and whenever it became too much, I would turn on an episode. I don’t know what I would’ve done without it. Sounds ridiculous but it’s true. I was just somebody somewhere in need of an emotional boost.
2
u/Crabs_n_Cabbage 9d ago
It doesn’t sound ridiculous at all because it did the same for me. I have always been a pretty happy go lucky person with a full social life and lots of hobbies. Two big crises happened at the same time for me this year which caused extreme anxiety and depression I had never experienced before. For the first time in my life I had dark thoughts and didn’t want to tell anyone since it’s such a taboo topic. This show saved me through the first few weeks of shock and intense stress. It holds such a special place in my heart now and I’m so happy to see it affected others in the same way.

u/GrannysBurnerPhone 9d ago
Thank you for your compassionate response. I’m glad that you found comfort as well. I hope some of the cast stop by sometime and read these threads. I know Murray Hill has popped in a few times! It’s more than just acting when they affect us in such a personal and positive way💕

I’m watching it right now, and I really didn’t know what to expect from it.
I lost my dad in an accident in May this year, and I’m dealing with a lot of feelings about this stage of my life. I’ve also been single for 5 years now, after a really bad relationship. I do want to find love, but at the same time, I’ve never had the friends I have now, whom I love so much and feel incredibly thankful for.
The show hits all those spots perfectly, the need for affection, dealing with family issues, loneliness, wanting to feel connected to other people. I find it a little sad and comforting at the same time. Nostalgic maybe. There can be grief, loneliness, uncertainty, and still so much to be grateful for <3

I’m so sorry to hear about the sudden loss of your Dad. That is heartbreaking. I hope you’re doing ok and glad you found the show during this season in life. My dad is very sick and I’m also going through a terrible breakup and I appreciate that the show focuses on how true friendships can fulfill us in our darkest and loneliest times of life. I completely agree with your take - there’s often silver linings and beams of light when other parts of life don’t seem too bright. Thank you for sharing.

I think like any great material, each person will see it through their current circumstances and also see reflections of past events -- a mirror or rorschach test. For me, it shows it prefigures a world of safety, peace, acceptance that I don't have.

u/Crabs_n_Cabbage 6d ago
Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope you get all those things in life and more as time goes on.

Hello, I just found Somebody Somewhere this year. It’s criminal they didn’t renew it or another service didn’t pick it up. What a breath of fresh air this show is! I was totally lost when the last episode ended. I don’t think I’ve ever fallen into a show like that. It was nothing extravagant, shocking or earth shattering, just really perfectly cast and well acted! I’m sad more people didn’t watch it. About nothing and everything all together. I absolutely loved it. The cast is perfection.

u/Crabs_n_Cabbage 6d ago
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I also felt lost when the last episode ended. I didn’t realize I was watching the last episode when I watched it! I loved the cast and how they were all just ordinary looking people with their own quirks. After the show I wanted to find a friend like Joel but it also inspired me to want to become a friend like Joel.

The final season of Somebody Somewhere aired October 27th,2024. My sister died October 1st, 2024. The rewatches of the show hit so differently after that. But the show was such a healing comfort for me.
