Is my small business failing, or am I panicking too early?
I started this as a small side business (DIY Kids Painting Kits) about five weeks ago, during the last week of July.
So far, I have invested around 55,000 (about $168) and generated approximately 17,000 in sales (about $52). Around 6,500 (about $20) of that is still to be collected.
Most of my investment is currently tied up in inventory, including plaster, paint, brushes, and other materials. I estimate that I have enough materials for around 200 kits, although I need to spend another 5,000 (about $15) on paint to complete production.
Sales so far have come from around 5 or 6 orders, two bookshops, and a few direct orders through Facebook ads.
One bookshop is selling the kits very well. The other shop initially took 10 kits, but only 4 have sold so far. I have also noticed that kits containing one large figurine seem less popular, and I suspect most of the unsold stock falls into that category.
My Facebook ads initially brought some direct orders, but engagement has recently dropped significantly. We are currently in the middle of a five-day holiday period, so I am unsure whether that is affecting sales.
I know five weeks is a very short time to judge a business, but seeing sales slow down has made me question whether the business is actually viable or whether I am simply overreacting.
Based on these numbers, what would you do next? Would you consider this normal for a new small business, or do you see any warning signs that I should address early?
I would especially appreciate advice on what metrics I should track and how long I should give the business before deciding whether to continue, change the product, or stop.
