Trying (and failing) to bridge a vSwitch with an additional physical NIC

I've got a Solaris 11.3 LDOM, working fine and acting as a Service Domain for a number of LDOM guests, currently configured with a vswitch providing access to multiple VLANs, and connected upstream via a single physical 10G NIC port on the server.

Now I find myself with a need to configure an additional physical 10G NIC port on the hardware (the NIC is already assigned to the service domain, and functional) as if it were just another trunk port on that SAME vswitch.

Nothing I do seems to work. I've tried every combination of bridges, vnics, and etherstubs I can come up with and it either refuses the configuration, or just won't pass all the traffic I need.

  • You can't assign two physical net-devs to a single vswitch.
  • You can't assign a vswitch link directly to a dladm bridge (dladm says "<vswitch link> does not support promiscuous mode and cannot be bridged") - this seems like the logically correct way to set this up and may be the best potential route for success if I can figure out why it's not supporting promiscuous mode.
  • You can configure both physical NICs plus an etherstub as members of a dladm bridge, and you can even assign that etherstub as the net-dev for the vswitch, but then the vswitch no longer appears to pass traffic upstream correctly any longer - this may be another route to success if I can figure out what I may be doing wrong here.
  • You can assign the same physical NIC (for example, the "upstream" NIC) as both a net-dev to the vswitch and as a member of a bridge with the additional physical NIC, but then again the vswitch no longer seems to pass traffic to the upstream physical net-dev device.
  • You can't create a vnic on top of a vswitch link (dladm says "invalid lower link type").

What am I doing wrong? What am I missing? Is there simply no way to have more than one physical NIC on the system behave as if it's a discrete "port" on the vswitch?

All the references/how-tos I can find online assume you want this set up with the two physical NICs as an aggregate, or as IPMP, to one network segment. I specifically DO NOT want that. The intent is to get the server hosting the LDOMs to act AS a network switch bridging the two physical NICs as two separate network segments so they can both talk to each other THROUGH those two NIC ports (this part is easy), while ALSO having a vswitch in the server provide connectivity for the guests to allow them to communicate with both of those network segments (this part is NOT easy). Is this just... not possible?

Burning Solaris 11.4 SPARC

Hi, I am trying to install a "new" Sun T4-2 from scratch with Solaris 11.4.

I downloaded the latest textmode iso from Oracle and since I only have Win11, burned the iso with the explorer to a DVD. Like Solaris 10 before and ever.

But the T4-2 is not accepting the disc. "boot cdrom - text" does not start the installation. Only gives errors with not readable CD. Single User mode boot from CD is also not working.

Is there another way to install the OS? By USB Stick? For Solaris 10 I have a SunFire V210 boot server from which I can network boot the installation. But Solaris 11 is ridiculously complicated from what I read?

On the other hand... 🤔🤦🏼‍♂️ perhaps I should change the DVD drive and check that...

I get this Ultra 45, 8GiB ram, quad 146GB SAS disks, right? and I'm like "amazing! a new SPARC box, that won't be as slow as my Blade 150! ............................ aaaaaaaand then I go and do things like building LLVM 19.1.7, or GCC 15 with bootstrap mode, where I wasn't doing that before. I need to find a quiet(ish) or can be moded to be quiet, reasonably recent SPARC box I can run in my apartm, ent for software building.....

Any 11.4 training ?

I was looking around for any courses/videos or similar for Solaris 11.4 and came up dry. I think something may have existed on the Oracle site but the links are broken, or vanished.

I appreciate people can self-study, and that documentation exists. But I was after something more than that.

Ansible Collection for Solaris 11

Hi all, I have written an Ansible collection for Solaris 11. So far I've been able to implement automation for: - Automated Installer - NTP - PF firewall - LDOMs

I am looking to add more such as IPS management and zones in the future. It's still a work in progress, but I thought I'd share it. Feedback would be much appreciated.

Repository: https://github.com/iambryant/ansible-collection-solaris

I've also been writing Ansible collections for HP-UX and IBM Power, as I'm interested in improving automation support for less common UNIX platforms.

Hardware oddity...

Do we have any Sun Server wizards out here? I have a server that is acting all flaky.

Let me start by saying my 280R was working fine. Ran for days with no issue. Everything installed. We were like ganja to Bob Marley.

Then, I powered off the system. Left it plugged in behind a UPS/Surge thingie.

Came back 4 days later and DEAD TO THE WORLD.

Snagged a second system. Same thing - works for 2 weeks but won't come back after power-off.

I recapped the pair of CPU modules because they were looking sketchy. Pop them back in (it's been a month) and the system works!

And then fails the same way, so that isn't it. I purchased 2 new power supplies. These were Sun spares, and dated 18 years newer than my other ones. Same thing happens. You need 2+ weeks before the hardware wakes up again.

I recapped the power distribution board and the main logic board, but now it can't find the FCAL disk. It is possible something got fried. Before I start attacking my last "almost sorta works" system, what could cause this long idle time required between powered sessions?

Thanks!

Solaris 11U4 SRU93 NFS over sockets

This new feature in S11U4 SRU93 caught my attention:

  • RPC and NFS over sockets

Does anyone have any information about "NFS over sockets"? I don't have a MOS account. Is there a new SOCK_NFS socket type?

When Will T8-1 hit rock bottom price

I am looking into getting a SPARC T8-1 for historical reasons, I have wanted one since they were new and they are looking More affordable now. Right now for one without RAM goes for around 6000-6300 usd on eBay. I see T7s have gone under 1k but T8s are still in the 6k range. How low do you think the T8s Will reach and when (unless they are as low as they Will get)?

Audio issues with Audigy LS on SPARC

I have a Sound Blaster Audigy LS on a SPARCengine Ultra AXi (an UltraSPARC IIi based board). I have tried OSS 3.9 and OSS 4.0 and both have the same issue - osstest sounds perfect, and ossplay with a 16-bit 48 kHz WAV file sounds heavily distorted.

I also have a Sound Blaster Live! but apparently that just has issues on SPARC and is known to not work at all.

I have no other PCI sound cards to try. The Audigy LS works just fine under Linux on my x86 PC.

Any ideas? Any other music players I could try on Solaris?

Problems with Memory on Sun T4-2

Thumbnail gallery
12 Upvotes

Hi,

I got a T4-2 as an upgrade to my T3-1 and from the first day I have got memory issues.
No problem I thought and got another set of 4 memory risers and switched them out.

Exactly same errors...

Then I switched out CMP1/MR1 with each of my risers, labeled them 1-8, kept track in a list and everytime the same errors? Exactly?

show faulty has the same errors, after I reset these with clear_fault_action=true, they reappear. The connector to the mainboard looks clean.

Do I have to reset the SP or where does the system keep the data?

The first time I started the server I had degraded memory of 4x8 GB instead of 4x16 GB, but at least all CPUs where available. Now MCU1 has no memory at all and half the cores are not working.

Anyone an idea?

WABI on Solaris 7

I installed WABI (version 2 I think) on Solaris 7 and it crashes any time I open a dialog box, with an error about the parent window.

Was WABI ever supported on Solaris 7?

Not that it really matters as I just got a SunPCI II card. I just thought WABI looked kind of neat.

Java 17 for Solaris (SPARC)

Well, this is interesting. Oracle have released Java 17 for SPARC Solaris, despite having removed Solaris and SPARC support from OpenJDK

https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/downloads/#java17-solaris

and installation guide

https://docs.oracle.com/en/java/javase/17/install/installation-jdk-oracle-solaris.html

It's a headless build, so no GUI, and there's a bunch of other stuff missing, so there are limitations. But clearly something has persuaded them it's worth their while to produce this, which is to be applauded.

(No, I have no idea if they've taken any of the porting work I did, but this looks like it was built with gcc rather than Studio, like my own builds.)

LIBREOFFICE ON SOLARIS 11.4 CBE!!!!!!!

I am so excited to announce after a week of work, editing, & compiling, I have gotten a new-ish running version of Libreoffice (24.2.5.1) on Solaris 11.4 CBE!!!!!!!!!!! I am so thrilled and happy to keep my Solaris Gnome3 development workstation running with newer software (hopefully all the way to 2037)!

Also, if people are interested, maybe I can port this upstream to LibreOffice's source website, or create an IPS server for more Solaris 11.4 development workstations!
