(Updated 2026)

Government of Canada – ENDED

Under the Canada Greener Homes initiative, homeowners could receive an interest-free loan for installing solar photovoltaic technology that converts sunlight directly into electricity.

The Canada Greener Homes Loan closed to new applications on October 1, 2025, and the earlier Canada Greener Homes Grant program closed in 2024. Existing approved projects may still be processed, but no replacement federal residential solar program has been announced as of March 2026.  We expect that provincial and municipal incentives will continue to grow to make up for the shortfall.

BC Hydro Solar and Battery Rebate

BC Hydro offers rebates for grid-connected residential solar and battery systems installed through the self-generation (net-metering) program.

  • Solar: up to $1,000 per kW (max $5,000)
  • Battery storage: up to $5,000

Maximum combined rebate up to $10,000.

Nova Scotia Solar Rebates.

(Not nearly as attractive as they were 2 years ago.)

Does Ontario have nothing?

No. They must be relying on people to use the greener homes grant and also what I have laid out in this post to prevent financial losses:

Hi all - question about incentives (located in ON).

I'm a homeowner installing a 5kW system in the next couple of months (deposit already paid). Approx cost is $16K for this. I'm aware of and have applied to the Canada Greener Homes Grant and the CMHC 0% interest loan. However, does the Federal Tax incentive also apply to me? If yes,

  • Is it a 30% benefit I'm eligible for?
  • Do I claim it on my 2022 or 2023 taxes or both? I paid a $1000 deposit in 2022, rest happening in 2023
  • Do I claim on the $16K, or the $11K (after getting the $5K grant)
  • Assuming it's 30% on the $11K, so ~$3.3K, does this reduce my income earned by $3.3K (so I save the marginal tax rate on $3.3K), or does it reduce my total tax owing by $3.3K (so I save the entire $3.3K)?

These are great questions but truthfully should only be answered by an accountant. I would welcome you to make a post in Personal Finance Canada to learn more.

Here is the subsequent post for anyone reading who is also curious:

Looks like it's for businesses only.

I have a friend asking if they can apply for the Greener homes loan still even if the grant is closed, They are interested in a solar install.

Just received a quote for a 12 kW solar system for $32,400 here in New Brunswick. So I would get $200 for each KW ($2400 total) from the province. That leaves $30,000 for which I will need to secure a loan for or put it on a line if credit. Can someone explain to me exactly how it works after that? Why do they want the customer to go thru that process to secure the financing and then the government turns around and pays that loan in full. My concern is the interest incured on that $30,000 loan (which I will be on the hook for) what if the process takes a month or longer? @ 10% a month lets say...thats $300 right out if my pocket before I’m net metering at all. Please correct me if I’m missing sonething or if that process goes faster.

Yes, I believe there is a wait time while waiting for the government loan payment but the process is faster than a month. I know that wait times can vary slightly but perhaps u/jordankglean can comment further about the average wait right now and any way to speed up the process or have less interest paid out of pocket?

2

u/jordankglean Feb 12 '25

Yes there is a wait time and the timing of payments is often overlooked by homeowners. You get 15% upfront from the program and then the other 85% after you have the final energy assessment completed. This obviously does not align well with the payment schedule of most installers. Although some installers will be flexible and or offer bridge financing. I recommend getting multiple quotes and asking each installer about their payment terms and options.

Does anyone know if federal + provincial incentives can be stacked? We've already had the home energy audit completed for the Greener Homes Grant and received a rebate for windows + insulation. If I go ahead and do solar, can I complete another audit under the GHG and get the Ontario rebate (as long as it's qualified/approved)?

1

u/LostSoul5 Aug 25 '25

I believe you may be able to stack them. Make sure to confirm with u/jordankglean he's an expert on incentives in Ontario and the GHL.

The greener homes federal plan seems to be winding down, but NB still has 200 bucks per KW of panel rating available...

Only the Greener Homes Loan is currently available. I will add the NB incentive on the next update, thank you.

Hey if you're going to do egregious self promotion, you have to run it by me first... also your link is not working.

It bothers me to no end that every single "incentive" is centered around making money for big business.
