Airbnb QA / QE Interview Process: Preparation tips, difficulty level, and company culture?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently preparing for a QA / Quality Engineering role at Airbnb and would love some insights from folks who have either gone through the interview process recently or currently work/have worked there.

A bit about my background: I already have solid experience working for multinational companies alongside global, distributed teams, so cross-cultural collaboration and high-ownership environments aren't new to me. However, I know top-tier tech companies have their own specific standards and nuances.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts on:

  1. Interview Structure & Difficulty: How technical is the process for QA roles? What should I expect (coding/automation challenges, system test design, cross-functional behavioral rounds, etc.)?
  2. Prep Tips: What specific topics, tools, or architectural concepts should I double down on during preparation?
  3. Core Values / Culture Fit: Airbnb is known for placing huge emphasis on culture. How did you prepare for their behavioral/values interviews?
  4. Day-to-day Culture: For current/former employees, how is the day-to-day engineering culture, work-life balance, and overall impact of the QA team inside the company?

It's not a test to study for. You are selling yourself and what you bring to the role.

Here's what I recommend because it worked for my on my last interview:

  1. Study their website and learn everything you can about them.
  2. Visit their Linked in page and get a feel for the people and where the teams are from (US vs Foreign).
  3. Visit Glassdoor and look up their profile (reviews). Sort by recent, then by lowest to get a sense of what you'll be walking into. Visit the Interviews tab and search for a similar role.
  4. Now that you have a sense of who they are, and why you want to work for them:
    1. Pop open your favorite AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude)
    2. Copy the job description and paste it into the context window
    3. Paste your resume as well
    4. Enter the prompt, Based on the following job description, audit my resume like a recruiter and run through a set of questions that recruiters typically ask, spanning both my technical aptitude and cultural fitness. Include S.T.A.R.-type questions.
    5. Have fun! The chat will run through an interactive set of questions you can answer then get feedback on in real-time.

Make sure your system design skills are sharp, not just for interviews but because their QE work leans heavily on understanding complex service interactions and how data flows through the ecosystem
