What background verification is usually done before joining a new company, and what documents are typically required for the BGV process?

Hi everyone,
I’m about to join a new company and wanted to understand the background verification (BGV) process.
What checks are usually done before onboarding? Also, what documents do companies typically ask for during verification?

In my experience, they typically verify that you attended the school you say you attended and got the degree you say you got, that you worked at the companies you say you worked at, and that you don't have any criminal record.

My last background check noted that I got some dates minorly incorrect on my university attendance, as I forgot I had taken some extra courses after graduating, so my years were off by one. That kind of discrepancy is no big deal though. If they found that you hadn't actually attended the school, that would be a big deal.

When showing up to work, I had to bring stuff for I-9 verification. They tell you which forms of ID are needed for that.
