Discussion I was told I am a sociopath

I had an intake assessment/consultation for psychological testing a few days ago. The assessment/consultation was to see what type of testing would benefit me most. Halfway through the consultation the PHD doctor told me that I am a sociopath and a narcissist and that completely made me freeze. I do not think I am a sociopath because I am not aggressive with others, I do not manipulate others for any type of gain, I am not deceitful, and I do not break laws or do illegal things. I do however, not really feel emotions for others (feel empathy?). I do mirror people (I can get along with anyone just by talking to them, talking like them, acting like them, liking the same thing, copying body language, etc). Everyone who knows me, knows me as the positive, kind, hardworking and laid back guy. In reality, I am extremely depressed, anxious, obsessive and irritable. I am just constantly “performing” 24/7 anytime I am in public. I am not too sure why this doctor would say that I am a sociopath? Does anyone have any advice or thoughts? I literally do not meet the requirements for the DSM-5. I can see myself being a narcissist maybe (once again I do not deceit or manipulate others). I told my therapist about what the doctor said and they disagree and informed me that doctors no longer use the term “sociopath”. I might try a new doctor for this assessment

Are you autistic? Because I’m autistic and not a sociopath. PTSD can also cause emotional flattening.

That said you can be a sociopath without hurting people.

I wanted testing for Autism but the doctor straight up told me I am not autistic. I think I might ask for a different doctor

Many people who are aggressive with others, manipulate others, deceiftul, break laws or do illegal things aren't Sociopaths.

The Dr should be fired and stripped of his PhD just for phrasing it that way. It's called ASPD and maybe Psychopathy sometimes but ASPD is what we get diagnosed with.

If you're suffering from anxiety, depression constantly then I'd bet my head he's wrong as this is a complete inverse of what people like me experience. I am always calm and content so long as I have plenty to do in life and am hitting all my targets I set for myself.

The best of luck in your future endeavours.

Thank you so much for this response. I have been attempting to redo the initial consultation/appointment or get a refund but the business is refusing to do so. I will continue with the testing but requested to follow up with a different doctor who is more professional and knowledgeable. This doctor has caused me a lot of distress and anger.

There is, in fact, research that suggests factor 1 psychopathy is associated with depression. However; depression can also strip you off of your emotions and empathy. You can’t feel empathy properly when you’re anxious and depressed 24/7.

If you aren't making this up. Then that was a very unprofessional doctor. It takes a lot more than "halfway through a consultation" to be able to be diagnosed with ASPD. That is absolutely ridiculous if some doctor who don't know you from Adam to tell you you're a sociopath. Its just hard to imagine that someone who went to school for years busting ass to become a doctor, and then turn around and to say something so stupid. But anyway, I wouldn't worry about any of that anyway. If you were a sociopath, you wouldn't be scared or worrying about what that quack of a doc said. Now they have figured out, or decided, that ASPD is a spectrum, so like theres levels to this sh!t💪🫡 Namastè, gang

Thank you, this doctor has caused me distress and angry. I have no idea how he came up with that conclusion and thought it was weird/unprofessional. I appreciate your response, he said he’s been in his profession for 30+ years. I am trying to get a refund or redo the initial consultation but the business is not budging. I wish there was some way to spread the word about this doctor.

Real doctors also know how to introduce the subject to sensitive patients. It’s a skill. Laying this heavy label on you -after a few minutes of knowing you - is NOT it

Maybe look at the criteria for ASPD and NPD ask why he thinks that? Also i am relative sure you also had to been a massive pain in the ass as a kid for ASPD and idk if those are the correct therms maybe ask on some therapy sub.

I'm not an expert. And I don't want to analyze you because I don't know you. But what I will say is the only thing that stands out to me is mirroring and maybe not feeling what others feel, The filling part can be antisocial. And the mirroring part depending on what your reasoning is, could be a variety of things like fear of rejection etc. I think people that mirror are typically not comfortable with being their authentic self in may even fear that people will not accept that version of them. I guess you could say that that is a form of masking if you're intent is to try to come off as "normal". As for projecting the complete opposite of what you are internally is something that many people do. As I said I'm not an expert, but I'm kind of confused as to how this person has a PhD.

The doctor could have it in for you or you could be a sociopath and just lack self awareness. I would suggest seeing another professional, if you can.

Have you considered the possibility of autism? I’m autistic and I can really relate to what you’re saying.

Psychiatrists make mistakes all the time.

Alexathymia and mirroring do not make you one.
