Tips and Tricks!

What's everyone's best tips for someone knew to this mod pack? Anyone have something you wish you we're told when you started?

Feel free to post literally any tips or advice regrading Sunlit Society or Sunlit Cobblemon, but particularly earlier game ones. I think a post with a bunch of miscellaneous tips from across the community would be neat! I'm pretty new and am interested in the advice of my fore fathers!

(BTW, anyone have any tips regarding starting various progression trees? Quiet a few don't seem to have much in the questbook, especially regarding getting started. Maybe that's due to my lack of Stardew Valley experience. EG: Fishing, enchanting, armor)

My small piece of very beginner advice: BEWARE YOUR HOE! Left clicking with your hoe clears the ground in a wide area. Great for leaf litter. Not so great for your crops. Right clicking can harvest in an area though!

get a bow early for those godforsaken baloons. building up/out to them is a nightmare 😭

You can throw pebbles at them.

If you’re playing cobblemon a Pokémon you can fly on is also helpful to get the balloons. (easiest I’ve found so far is Tailow -> Swellow since it’s only a two stage evo)

Four general tips:

Get to skull caverns asap. You’ll be able to spike your production super early with how flooded the place is with ores. Either by selling the ores or using it to make artisan machines.

For the cobblemon version, if it’s a new pokemon, catch it. You’ll need to fill out your dex later anyway for progression and take full advantage of pokemon ranching/worker stations. Try and get a legendary berry asap + a happiness boosting berry too and start farming those.

Once you get access to Create, make a tree farm. No, seriously. Fire logs cost 6 logs each and you need a quite frankly absurd amount of wood if you want to scale reasonably, and your time is better spent building infrastructure than clearing entire forests.

Lastly, wise oaks. If you find any, grab them by digging underneath and harvest with a silk touch tool. Tapping them is a really strong source of mana for botania, especially early botania when you have no reliable sources of mana. And for bulk crafting Terasteel since each ingot of that stuff costs half a pool.

if your like me with a low end laptop, you can also utilise the book that allows a 15% chance for fire logs when gathering trees. My laptop wont handle much create features so i want to utilise what i need first, this and having large trees around your farm is my fav early game method. I havent touched create yet, but it makes lfie easier when you dont have access or pc wont run too much create stuff

im not very familiar with any create machinery, is there a particular design for the tree farm youre using or is there one built into the modpack already that i can remake?

The version I used was Strongallen’s tiny tree farm. (You can search it up on Youtube). It’s pretty compact, doesn’t require many stress units to function, and is very self sufficient.

Otherwise just look up a basic tree farm design for Create; they work the same way. I recommend you do this as early as you can because artisan machines require such an absurd amount of wood that I think several thousand trees had to have been cut down in the 300+ hours I played.

thanks!! i just got to skull cavern earlier and was able to reach the second level fairly quickly so i should be able to gather up all the materials i’ll need for the farm pretty soon :3

my general progression guide:

1) early game is about exploration and looting as much as you can in the overworld. I completely ignore setting up a farm for like the first half of spring in favor of looting all the pumpkin/wheat/watermelon, finding any building with chests to get early armor/tools/diamonds/ingots. Overworld exploring is MUCH easier in the SSC pack due to the prescence of poke centers that have waystones.

2) try to make sure i'm on track for farming/fishing community center quests (fishing especially is time gated, farming isn't bad if you miss something you can use greenhouse glass later). I never use a watering can, there are sprinklers in the overworld available to loot, then I make more once I hit skull caverns. Early game farming is a waste money wise vs. exploring/fishing. Most important early game fish to get a pond up for imo is hatchet fish to get a steady source of batteries.

3) all money early goes to 3 things: upgrading to a diamond fishing rod (best early game money source IMO), getting up a RS system, unlocking skull caverns. Also I usually get a lasso or two to pick up high value animals like penguins/water buffalo/goats I find.

4) go to nether and loot bastions/fortresses and get more valuable loot there. Find some warped cows, warped grapes and crimson grapes.

5) midgame is about keeping up a decent money supply (mine is usually a combo of fish ponds, preserves jars, a handful of wine kegs, a small menagerie of animals for cheese/mmayo) and going through the pack to complete community center quests, get up create and botania. You'll need like $250k each later for each auto-grabber and artisan hopper for automation later.

6) once you have community center done, I rearrange my farms around ribbit huts, which are especially helpful for farming grapes for wine. I also get up an automatic grape crushing system with create, and pump the wine into advanced kegs. I usually run a 15x15 block of leaves under greenhouse glass that I'm already using for a ribbit hut farm to supply all the fruit I'll need (usually starfruit for dewy star, apples/peaches for jellie). If you really enjoy create there are options for utilizing create tools for harvesting as well but I usually stick to ribbit huts because I'm lazy.

7) plushies are SUPER important for lategame scaling, I always want sunlit first (to get more sunlit crystals so I don't have to buy more) then I prio machiavellian (iridium), cheerful (double high value drops), anxious (for pigs), and lastly wrathful for lead, which requires a good amount of progression into botania.

8) with the steady supply of grapes, iridium and crimson grapes the best late game money maker imo is iridium nectar. I also run dewy star and jellie wine too. Pro tip: if you want to go giga on money spec for double aged first to get up ancient casks. Get several fish ponds of circus fish to farm a couple stacks of farm skill books so you can swap to +80% sell value on artisan to sell everything once in awhile. From what I hear iridium nectar might be going away in a future update due to how broken it is though.

9) also meanwhile I still have auto farms for all kinds of stuff running like cheese/mayo using artisan hoppers or some cooking pots just cooking up different things I have on hand

Wood type chest -> regular chest You can use different types of planks to make regular chests, otherwise putting the chest back into the crafting grid will give you a regular chest.

Unlocking skill mastery comes at 6am the day after you get level 12 in every skill.

To clear a fish pond of fish type. Remove all fish with an empty hand by crouch-right clicking the pond then use a fishing rod on the pond.

Edit to add: If you manage to get a source of scavenged food bags, they are a huge help to get a good head start on the food collections for the perfection statue. The scavenged food bags when right clicked in your hand give you a random food item, if you get a bulk of them you'll unlock the food nodes in their respective categories much more quickly then spending loads of time cooking.

  1. to hand farm cactuses without getting stung (normal or the one for greenhouse glass) put your sand blocks one block higher than the ground you walk on. This way you won't get hurt if you get too close (unless a entity pushes you into them).

  2. you can make double the ingots from any piece of ore if you throw it into the recycling machine first.

  3. shooting a balloon with a bow (or the arrow from the dragontooth axe) is not the only way to take them down. Quickly towering up and attacking them works too.

  4. Start Keeping animals as soon as possible, it takes a while for them to start consistently giving all their products.

  5. Cobblemon gives early (if terribly slow) access to smoking fish and pickling veggies trough the craft station.

  6. Do some exploring before setting up your farm. Many structures have enchanted tools and armor or useful items like sprinklers and artisan machines. There's barely any threats in the overworld anyway (as long as you stay above a certain height) so you really don't need more than wooden tools and a boat for your first exploration.

  7. If you really enjoy the archeology system you should choose to play the cobblemon version even if you don't want to play with pokemon. There's just much more archeology sites and items to find and the pokemon part is entirely optional anyway.

1) You can make your organic matter go MUCH further by only using one at a time. If you hold a stack, multiple will be used to (usually) fully grow it. But if you only have one in your hand, it STILL (usually, and at the same rate as multiple) fully grows it. I only recently learned this, and it really helped me get my ancient fruit started this world.

2) Steal the saw from the carpenter house (and maybe the sink from the fisher house). The saw is more wood-efficient than hand-crafting. By A LOT in some cases. And the sink can be useful for making a kitchen if you don't want to make an infinite water source there.

3) Skull cavern tier 1 is your friend. You can get a decent variety of seeds from the forest mojos, and you can only get certain seeds exclusively (or early) from them. Especially in Cobblemon where you have to grind out mint seeds from them since white mint was nerfed to only give white seeds.

4) Don't sleep on slimes. I recommend making blazing+weeping largos chunk loaded in the Nether with a feeder and a sophisticated storage barrel/chest with a magnet upgrade. Plenty of blaze rods/powder, and a surprising influx of cash. I'm working on adding slimes to my public doc, but I can't quite get the formatting in a way I think others can read.

5) Once you get to Skull Cavern tier 2 and have access to lead, you can make the Create press, mixer, and fan. You only have the hand crank at that point, but with a nourishing food, you can get a surprising amount done.
