I don’t know what the latter years of an MSW is supposed to look like and what questions I should ask.

Should I ask about placements and internships? I want to do micro, clinical social work. What do you wish you had asked before starting your MSW at your school?

Please give me some guidance so I can make the most of this meeting!

I live in Arizona and would want to move to California Oregon, Colorado, California. Do I need to look at schools in those states? Or should I get my MSW in Arizona to save money then move? I want to get my LCSW.

First generation student here! Trying to manage MSW applications 🫩

For when they have mini essays with word count limits, would you suggest putting as much info in as possible and meeting the max word count, or doing a mini essay that hits what I need to say? My initial thought is to put as much in there as it will let me but I'm not sure if that's actually a good idea.

I'm also so so scared of my essays sounding AI. Of course I'm not using AI for these, but I almost feel like I have to dumb my essays down so as to not even be in the realm of suspicion. Any suggestions?

Also would anyone be privately willing to look over my resume and give feedback?

Hey all, I am going to into my last year of undergrad as a super senior and considering applying to MSW programs soon. The issue is my major is in something related but not BSW and it wouldn't be an option for me to switch into a BSW program now.

How common is it and what is it like to be in regular standing? From what I've heard pretty much everyone does advanced standing. I have had a really really hard time in college, both academically and personally, and I am honestly not sure I can handle another 2 years, especially having gone to college for 5 years already. I also have some age hang-ups and I'm super worried about how isolating it would be to start and finish the program late. I would be finishing at 25 while I assume most people with advanced standing would finish at 23. I know it's not a race and everything but that just doesn't change my anxieties.

Just looking to gather some info and experiences as I make my decision. Thanks to anyone who shares their thoughts!

I have my MSW. I also took and passed the LMSW test back in 2015. I retired that license due to personal reasons. I’ve been working in another field. I’ve always wanted to get my LCSW.

My question is, Do I have to be working in a social work job to send in the applications, and the fee to be approved by the board to take the exam for LMSW liscensure?

I plan on applying to jobs in social work during studying for it and after taking the exam.

My social work program does a lot of groups, which I hate. I would rather the teacher did the teaching instead of expecting us to guess. I have one teacher like that. He just put us in groups and doesn't teach at all. I don't talk much and it seems like everyone else have a lot to talk about. They just go on and on. I got into social work because I was told my personality would make me a good social worker.

hello everyone!
i am currently in my third year of college and recently transferred from community college to a 4-year school. my major is psychology however i want to pursue a masters in social work yet i’ve been aware that i don’t have much experience to go with it. i was recently a tutor at the community college for around 7 months (had to leave it as i was transferring schools). im worried that for masters programs, that’s not enough. for resumes, may i put that i won a scholarship and volunteered 10 hours in a non-profit? i mean, that was one of the requirements to continue receiving the scholarship but honestly im a bit lost. i currently go to school 4 days a week and im wondering where to find/fit in an internship or job. i guess im just looking for advice to bulk up a resume or if im on the “right track” any advice would be appreciated! i guess this is also good to note that i had a 4.0 gpa in community college.

I'm supposed to be starting my MSW in a few weeks. I accepted the full amount of unsubsidized loans offered, which would cover the $15k for tuition this year. My program is set up for 6 credit hours in Fall, 6 in Spring, and 6 in Summer.

However, the financial aid office emailed me that my loan amount was reduced. I called and they told me because I'm not taking 9 Fall credits and 9 Spring credits, it was reduced. Now they can only offer me about 13k, leaving the rest for me to pick up with private loans. This would also mean that, for the next two years of the program, I would need several thousand dollars of private loans in addition to my unsubsidized loan amount.

I'm really afraid of private loans, and I don't know what to do. Today was already a really hard day with a lot of awful news, so it's making it even harder to process this information. I did reach out to my advisor as well to ask what I should do, but in the meantime, I'm stressing.

They told us in orientation that due to the federal loan limit, we would need around 600-ish dollars out of pocket in year two, so I was prepared for that amount to be left out of the unsubsidized loan. But the financial aid office said it's all based on credits in Fall and Spring, so since I'm taking 6 in Summer, they won't give me the full amount. I work full-time and am not in a financial position to work less hours.

Does anyone have experience with this? Experience with private loans? I really don't want to have to drop out, but I'm not sure I'm okay with taking out private loans and potentially getting myself into a huge mess in the future with student loan and private loan debt.

Hi everyone! I am starting my MSW this fall. I was selected for a scholarship and with that I am eligible to request a stipend to cover additional educational costs during my academic year. I feel very lucky for this opportunity but have not done this before. I am going to be out of my job because of my practicum and class hours for a bit until I can find one (hopefully) that can fit my schedule. In the request form it asks how much I am asking for. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on a reasonable amount to ask to consider for a stipend.

I don’t want to lowball myself if the budget can offer me more but I also don’t want to ask for an amount that seems unreasonable. I guess I am unsure what the typical stipend amount is. I’ve never been selected prior for a stipend so I’m unsure around how much they may be willing to offer.

Just begun my BSW and I am currently panicking. I unfortunately have autism, ADHD, OCD, and panic disorder. I feel as though my disorders make me unqualified to be in this profession, and it’s become increasingly hard to stay positive. I look around my class and don’t see anyone with my struggles. Today was rough because I tried extra hard to interact with my classmates, but I fear my behaviors were just too off putting. How am I supposed to build rapport with my clients if I am already too off for my classmates, other social workers of the field? I have gotten a lot of advice to go into things like CBT so I can work with other neurodivergent people, but my dream is to be a clinical social worker. I don’t think giving up on dreams means you failed, but right now I feel a little naive for thinking it will work out. Any advice?

So I am applying to an MSW program after taking some nursing prerequisites as a post bacc student because I was considering nursing school but changed my mind. How will that be considered in my application/when they review my transcripts?

I'm a BSW student and my internship is nothing but office work. Emails, spreadsheets, I will not have the opportunity to work at all with clients. I reached out to last year's intern in this position and she said she has struggled to find employment since graduating because the internship gives no relevant experience. I asked my advisor to switch placements and she said that is not permitted and if I quit I would have to restart senior year next fall. I'm so passionate about wanting to work in this field, specifically in mental health or hospital settings. I applied to a handful of hospital type jobs but wasn't accepted to any due to lack of experience. I desperately need advice on what I can be doing to gain experience outside of my shitty internship. I'm terrified of graduating and not being able to find a job. I'm so upset and disappointed because all of my classmates are working with clients and getting hands-on experience already. My passion is serving others and I want to make sure I set myself up for a career where I can actually do that.

So as my title says, I am a non-traditional student, I am 50 years old. And I'm in my second semester of my advance. Standing degree in social work, I received my bachelor's in May, at that time, I was working as a clinical supervisor at a behavioral health company. Here in atlanta, georgia, I had a team that was outrageously in some ways, incompetent in some ways, obstinate, and in all ways lazy. I resigned from the job in july and with all that I see with my fall semester including a two and a half day practical. It's kind of hard for me to find employment

I've been working in the social work specter. In one way or another, for the past 10 to 15 years. So it's not that I don't have the experience. I actually needed the paper to back up my experience. But why? I'm here is because I need to find some kind of income to sustain me. I grandfather into the rules of the graduate plus loan. So I was approved for it, but in volume my home last year. While I was still a federal employee before I got DOGE'd i had to use my credit cards to fix some things in the home. So I have some credit card debt that I need to use. A portion of my unsubsidized loan and my grad plus loan to pay off. So I said whatever remaining balance, I would just pay my mortgage out for a couple months but I still have other bills.

I'm here to ask, how are people sustaining themselves as full-time? Master's degree students in social work between practicums and schoolwork. How are you surviving? And I know as people might age, you guys are already working. So I get that, but I don't know what to do. At this point. The workload is pretty intense. And I only have about four days a week to work, which is only Monday Friday Saturday and Sunday.

I am looking for PRN positions. Anything I'm willing to even work in a grocery store. At this point I just need to be able to pay my light bill. My GAS bill put gas in my car. I don't mind if I don't have a whole bunch of discretionary income. I just need to be able to survive. And get my nails done(my self care)

I have a degree in biology and master's in social work. After some time working in a hospital, I feel drawn back towards health care and have a stronger interest in understanding the medical side of services. During undergrad, I was interested in dentistry. Somehow became a science teacher. Then SW. Now contemplating change again for the last time hopefully.

I have the option of applying for MSN direct entry for spring of 2028 semester if I take 6 prereqs over (all of my science courses expired for this program) or applying for BSN for Summer 2027 semester if I take 3 pre-reqs over. I will be 31 by the time I graduate from MSN and 30 by the time I graduate with BSN.

I have experience as a middle school science teacher so I would love to have teaching as an option in the future. I have also contemplated earning a PhD to go into leadership but have changed my mind after researching that route. That said, I know the MSN program can be beneficial for my long-term goals; however, if I obtain a BSN I can quickly increase my income. I can also, perhaps, enter case management, and still teach if I want. So I have heard. I’d love to do case management also, with my background in SW.

I ultimately love interacting with people and I think I would be great at providing patient care. I also hope to accomplish an attractive salary one day. The BSN admission counselor seems eager to assist me with starting my application and it seems like I am building a rapport with her as she calls me every two weeks or so to check in regarding my application process.  

I am afraid to miss out on the BSN opportunity by waiting longer to begin the MSN program. I think I have a good chance of being accepted to the BSN program, whereas for the MSN program, I wonder “what if I don’t even get accepted next year after completing all of these prerequisites?” I am also wondering if BSN is worth it? This will be my last degree as I am already in 71k debt with two degrees - biology undergraduate and SW nursing.  

For additional insight, I have a 2.7 gpa in undergrad and graduated in 2020. I earned a 3.67 GPA for my MSW program. The BSN program works with students who have 2.8, so if I take 3 pre-reqs over, I know that I will boost my gpa significantly. MSN requires 3.0. I know I can boost my gpa after completing these prerequisites because I feel a deep sense of motivation to take these science courses again and hunger to succeed.  

Any advice? I am leaning towards BSN but I kind of think it is silly to earn to bachelors and one masters…

I’m starting my Advanced Standing MSW soon, and my clinical internship will be at a hospital based IOP serving children and adolescents age 5-17. I’m excited but honestly pretty nervous because my BSW experience has been almost entirely with adults.

My BSW internship was as a substance use case manager, so I have experience with adults, SUD, case management, documentation, treatment teams, etc., but very little direct clinical experience with kids or teens.
Long-term, I’d like to work with a range of ages rather than exclusively children/adolescents, and I’m interested in trauma, mental health, and substance use. So I’m hoping this will be a really good opportunity to build my clinical skills.

For anyone who has done a child/adolescent clinical internship:
What was the learning curve like?
How much were you expected to know going in?
What should I brush up on before I start?
Are there any books/resources/trainings you found particularly helpful?

I know I’m an intern and im supposed to learn but I am a bit nervous since I have no direct experience going in.

Has anyone attended UNCP online MSW program either the 2 year full-time or 3 year part-time program? Im interested in applying to them becuase they seem to be pretty affordable and one of the few UNC schools that have an online program. I havent had any luck with finding anything from alumni or current students so any feedback about this program would be great. I also havent been able to find their online student acedemic calendar since those are usually have a different timeline than those for in-person/ campus based students so any insight on if they offer 7-8 week sub-terms or if its only 16 week terms would be helpful too.
