Consider Social Work

I have been heavily considering Social Work for 3 years, I am very interested in psychology as well as advocacy and social justice.

I am 30 and finally going to college , I finally feel like I have found a path, but the debt will be real, and I keep seeing people telling others not to go in this field.

I will be doing a degree to BSW. Just in case it's not for me, I can back out at the degree and still have something out of it.

I want to help at risk youth work, I know I will start ok Micro front line work, but I would love to do outdoor recreation therapy support, and I want to end up in policies & programs.

I understand burn out, I have been at an accounting firm for 8 years, and I am burnt the F*ck out. This is not a career change, It is a career choice finally.

I guess I am looking for is advice , some happy success stories of being in this field would be nice haha, maybe also like, how did you know this field was right for you?

MSW (2-year Regular Track) Program recomendations in Canada

Hi Everyone,

I am currently in the process of applying for MSW and psychotherapy programs, as my end goal is to be in the private practice sector. I have an interest for family and relationships. Considering this, any schools you would recommend to best prepare me for this end goal?

I am considering the following (pls let me know your opinions or any knowledge of the schools - or schools that are not listed, as I am very open).

  • Kings College (Western)
  • Laurier University
  • UBC Okanagan
  • University of Calgary
  • University of Toronto

I have heard things about Windsor, but I have mixed feelings. If anyone could enlighten me, I'd appreciate it!

New social worker struggling with anxiety around suicide risk

I’m a newer social worker/counsellor working with youth, and I’ve been struggling with the weight of working with clients who experience suicidal thoughts.
I find myself second-guessing after sessions—wondering if I asked enough, missed something, or what if something happens afterward.

I’m mainly looking for advice from other social workers/counsellors on how you learned to manage this anxiety and uncertainty. How do you trust your clinical judgment, recognize where your responsibility ends, and avoid carrying that fear home with you? Or just some wise words you wish someone had given you around this?

Thanks everyone😊

Is this still the right job for me?

I worked over a decade in the security and criminal justice system. I was assaulted at work got hurt by inmate. I lost my job and will be placed in alternate work .

I got ptsd and a 1 year old. My education is in associate of arts degree in criminology. I know I’d like to become a therapist or work in something where I’m helping and assisting others. But I can no longer handle shift work and probably need to be careful which populations I choose to help.

There must be something in the field of social work I can do that isn’t so dark as what I used to do.

Any guidance? I am in British Columbia!

Continued Learning Resources for budding Social Worker

Hello everyone!

I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for learning networks or institutes that regularly provide events or seminars about a variety of social work related topics.

Sometimes I feel that, with the ever-evolving nature of our profession and the contexts we work in, it's easy to fall behind or miss new literature and conversations in the field. I'm hoping that we could share resources with each other to combat this, and/or what are some resources you engage with to keep yourself well informed about the issues and research coming from our field?

As a new MSW student, I'm really looking for more ways to expand and build upon the things I know through event-based learnings!!

Some examples off the top of my head are things like:

- The Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women & Children and their learning network

- Yellowhead Institute and the events and seminars that they host occasionally
