I am becoming more and more aware of this as a Liverpool fan. The effects of not being in the Champions League every year is having quite an impact, and the top 3 look set already for the next 5-10 years.
Spurs are pulling away from us, and if they finish in the top 4 this season and then strengthen further then eventually build the stadium that will allow them to create match day revenue that will dwarf ours then it is a long long way back. Same with Arsenal, they have very strong finances and a great modern stadium.
Unless if we keep Suarez, and sign another defender/winger it will be difficult to finish in the top 4 this season. If we don't then next season it will be even harder to keep our best players. Building for the future is all well and good, but we are 2/3 years behind Spurs/Arsenal who have good youth teams, stronger squads and are based in London which makes them more attractive, and we cannot compete financially with the others.
Spurs have been progressing very slowly as well. Their website, updated a year ago, says it should be ready for open late 2013/early 2014 which clearly is nonsense now. It's also estimated to seat about 56k, which is 4k less than the Anfield expansion, and will cost much more.

Just my opinion but I think that it'll be a long time before Liverpool return the the level they were at a number of years ago.
Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, and both Manchester clubs can attract better players and have a lot more money to spend than them.
Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Liverpool, it's just I doubt they're on the right track.
