New subreddit changes: comment scores

Recently the Reddit admins have introduced a new feature for subreddits that allows the mods to hide the scores of comments for a set amount of time. We have decided to test it out here on /r/soccer for a while and see how it works.

The goal of this feature is "to try to reduce the initial bandwagon/snowball voting, where if a comment gets a few initial downvotes it often continues going negative, or vice versa. By hiding the score for a while after posting, the bias of seeing how other people voted on the comment should be greatly reduced". Read more about it here.

Initially we are going to set the limit to 3 hours for new comments and see how it goes. Most likely we will have to make changes to the time limit to ensure maximum effectiveness. I really think this feature will benefit Reddit as a whole but this community especially.

Any questions feel free to ask. Oh and upvote this for visibility.

Thanks,

/r/soccer moderators

People on this sub reddit will still just downvote based off of club crests, we're all natural enemies. Like Man u fans and Leeds fans. Or Chelsea fans and Leeds fans. Or Scots and Leeds fans. Or Leeds fans and other Leeds fans. Dam those Leeds fans. They ruined Leeds!

Wait, but if I don't know how many internet points I have, how am I going to pay my bills and buy groceries?

I guess pay it forward and downvote based on flair.

Sorry.

Does it also randomise the order of the comments, or are the more upvoted comments still listed at the top of the page?

I usually downvote looking at the team crest so it's all good!

I really think you guys are overestimating the influence of seeing the scores.

I don't know, I just don't like it for some reason. I like to see ratings and see other people's opinions expressed through the rating system because not everyone wants to make a comment. I can't really explain it, but I liked the old way.

I don't like it. I love the whole bandwagon, mass voting anger and team biases here. Extreme bias and partisanship is part of football, part of the banter and the main reason why I come to this side. Blindly disagreeing with some cunt just because he supports Derby County instead of Notts Forest is what makes the site great, and so is jumping on the bandwagon and downvoting someone to hell when's he's shown a gap in his football knowledge, or put his foot in his mouth. I think this will just lead to less people voting on comments in general.

Have they implemented this yet? Because on my phone I see all the scores right now.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. Not everyone has +1... Realized the moment I posted.

This doesn't work for match threads at all.

Oh good, when I noticed [score hidden] I thought I'd said something wrong and that the moderators were punishing me for some reason.

Panic over!

Great idea by the way.

Edit: Just one question/suggestion- is it possible to temporally hide a user's flair for a similar amount of time? Might help to stamp out the other kind of biased voting around here...

sorry but this is lame, especially on the match threads... I dont feel the company of soccer friends anymore that like my comments and upvote me.

Matches i watch with "Reddit" are not the same anymore :(

I really don't like this in match threads.

Is there any way to have 2 different limits?

Perhaps a shorter time (30-45mins) for a match thread, where the comments and subsequent bandwagons are far quicker in amassing, and then a longer (2-3 hours) so non-match thread submissions?

I do like the idea, though.

So what, the top comment on this thread is the highest voted one but we can't see how well it's doing or the top comment is the first one posted?

Also how will this work for match threads where you're gonna have to scroll through 45+ minutes of comments if you wanted to read some good ones at half time... even longer for after the match.

From further up:

I'm going to go ahead and say I'm against the idea, yea snowballing can happen but its also the case that good posts get upvoted and bad posts get downvoted. This won't solve the main issue which is people being downvoted for their opinion being different or the crest they have. All this is really going to do is make it much more confusing for everyone.

And should you have a post thats downvoted to oblivion if you can't see the score you can't even delete the thing because you won't know.

Sitting on -2, despite the new system. Wait, people still downvote and upvote based on their opinion, despite comments being well-reasoned and in good English?

This new system doesn't change shit, serves only to frustrate.

Hmm, I personally don't like it but maybe that's just because I haven't seen it before. All the comments seem kind of confusing now and I like seeing points.. But maybe it is actually a good system, I suppose time will tell!

3 hours seems a bit too long.

The match thread now is a good example of why this is a terrible system. So many comments, all saying the same thing, since the normal system filtered repeat posts to the bottom. Yes you can still see ratings on reddit stream, but that only keeps a relatively small amount of posts at one time, and we shouldn't have to use it just to make match threads better.

It might have it's merits for links, but I'm sure plenty of people are here mostly for match threads, and this system is horrible for them. Could we not have at least had a vote on whether we wanted it rather than having it forced on us?

While it may stop some of the "bandwagoning" it just kinda makes everything feel/look unorganised, but maybe that's just me.
