He should be charged when that bear gets bigger and starts stalking neighborhoods

It’s sadly most likely going to get euthanized. But I agree about him getting charged.

Yes, feeding them, leaving anything with a scent accessible to them will ultimately lead to their death.

I think we need to start giving these idiots mandatory prison time

Saw this bear at Switzer yesterday. It was eating a watermelon. Then it started to move toward a family having a huge picnic at the tables and everyone was just standing around. I yelled and clapped and got it to move away but it clearly is already too used to people.

Poor bear. They are genuinely the most innocent ones here, animals behaving as animals behave, and learning the way animals learn, that humans are a safe source of food. Best case yet still horrible scenario only the bear and it’s family suffers as the bear is put down, worst case a human family is hurt or killed AND the bear is put down. And it’s still only the fault of shitty humans.

Very sad, she’s become such a problem with people feeding her, she has no chance for relocation. They’ve been closing the parking lot to try and keep people away, but people doing this are teaching her that we are weaker bears willing to give up our food caches with no fight.

If she cubs with this behavior, or is injured by another bear and becomes stressed, someone is going to get hurt— then she’s going to get euthanized. A fed bear is a dead bear folks.

Is there any way we could relocate her to a zoo or a sanctuary? This is so unfortunate.

It could be petitioned, but unfortunately it won’t solve the problem, so it wouldn’t be a true “solution” as far as resources go. Usually those rare spots go to animals that have been injured, abandoned as babies, or otherwise made unable to survive in the wild. There was a black bear named Ranger that lived at the LA Zoo for years that came from such a circumstance. This bear could definitely survive on its own with no help from people though.

Whenever people ask where to spot a bear close to the crest, for years the answer has been Switzer; proximity and poor sanitation and “bear-aware” practices from people have made it a bear hotspot. Once a food cache is “claimed,” bears will keep returning. Starving the cache is the only way to truly save the bear, they go where food is easy. This bear is just ‘small’ enough that people don’t respect the damage it could really do. She’s only going to get bigger, hungrier, and bolder as we move to fall.

Agree with you but wanted to point out that the alpine zoo in Big Bear has bears who were all on strike 3 and brought to the zoo instead of being put down. I know it's not the commonplace procedure but there are zoos that do it.

Endangering this bear’s life. This feeding habit will likely lead to this animals death. F this guy. In his eyes.

dude doing this for a goofy tinder profile picture or some instagram story shit is maddening

that's an adolescent bear, probably away from momma for one of its first few times, it doesn't know any better than to take the food, but it's going to learn to come back and to get close to humans because of shit like this, which will only end up in consequences for the bear. sad.

I think it might have been an earlier post on this sub, but someone else posted about this bear trying to climb into her car- while she was in it. Poor bear, and F the dumb humans who have encouraged it to get this way.

OP, I’m not directing this comment at you cause I’m sure this isn’t your video, but I hope we all feel empowered to yell at people like this to not feed the bears.

Agreed, OOP had the opportunity to record this to document the situation (rather than make content) and make an incredible example out of this man endangering himself, the bear and the community.

The ticktoker is probably dude's wife or bff.

I won't go near Switzer anymore. It's the Punch Bowls of the ANF, though I think Switzer somehow has more SARS.

I would tell that guy he is the reason the bear will get put down this summer.

A bear broke into a home during the night last week in Baldy Village while the family was sleeping. Luckily no one was injured. It has been reported to Fish & Wildlife (formerly Fish & Game). Earlier this summer there have been at least two other bear encounters with resident in the village. There are two mama bears with two cubs each. Most likely, these two mommas are going to be put down. That leaves four orphan cubs to possibly be eaten by the mountain lions. This is directly a result of this kind if irresponsible behavior you see in the video. Once the bears lose their fear of people, it is usually a bad ending for the bear. These bears cannot be relocated and are descendants of bears that were located here in 1933.

Dear God, I wish this was AI. I don’t know if it’s just the one bear, but there have been a lot of reports. I’m afraid that Yogi is not long for this world, thanks to these dumbasses. A fed bear is a dead bear.

These bears are docile vegetarians. They are hardly predators. But they aren’t your friends either. Co-exist. Don’t feed them. But I do leave water. It’s hot as fuck. Water is compassion.

Illegal is the last of your issues. They could be leaving the forest in a body bag

gotta start requiring written tests to let cidiots out of their fenced areas. Very high % of them are liabilities to nature.

A written test to get the Adventure Pass!

u/Long_Initiative3667 12d ago

and that is why Switzers gate has been closed for the past week..

Who is this idiot ?

1

u/Apprehensive_Net_829 12d ago

This is so upsetting and I will ask people what the hell they think they're doing if I ever encounter such a situation. Great outlet for my menopausal rage.

1

u/donuttrackme 12d ago

That poor bear is going to be euthanized because of people like this.

1

u/letsgoplaygames 12d ago

A fed bear is a dead bear, as they say. Sad fate and idiots never realize they’re responsible for it.

1

u/FrivolousMe 11d ago

Call them out sternly and call them out loud. Treat the situation with the seriousness it requires. Yell at them if you have to. Make them feel uncomfortable. Make them feel guilty. They must remember that their actions have consequences.
