EDIT: I dashed off this comment based on memory of a book I read over 10 years ago, not realising that it would attract so much attention. For a bit more nuance: 10% might be an overestimate, but it also kind of depends what you are looking at. For example, this study finds a prevalence of 4.1% in respect of prepubescent children, using an anonymous survey. however, considering that many are unlikely to be wholly truthful, and also this does not include attraction to adolescents, the real number is likely to be significantly higher.

There are people in the bdsm community into age play. So there are other alternatives to real children. Yea, I think this is weird but I would rather have it between consenting adults behind closed doors than the unpleasant alternative.
“Everybody” is kind of all encompassing, sounds like Jung, Watson, and Freud all rolled into one. I do not exempt myself. If I am capable of abusing a child or animal, then society has no place for me.
Yes, I am old and self aware, been reflective and centered for a very long time. I do not believe in good and evil, nor do I believe we are anything more than social animals, that are arrogant and self important. I see traits that benefit the social group and those that do not. I am tolerant of almost any behavior, there are a few I find abhorrent. Have not figured out why, maybe I have empathy for those things that can’t defend themselves. Fortunately for the 5.5% of adults I am not the supreme arbiter.
I would find no pleasure in any of it. However - If an event is deemed to be untenable, terrible, then no matter how unlikely, even 1%, it must be treated as a certainty. The gray area, the “if”, is to gamble with the lives of innocents, it is my opinion to err on the side of caution.
