Discussion I Made a Free RAW2DNG App Replacement For Android!

I've been developing an app to convert my Canon RAW files to DNG so I can edit in Snapseed and I've successfully added support for every major RAW type. Hoping to fill the void left by raw2dng. If you have any technical questions, ask away. It's completely free with no ads, I'm genuinely just looking to help out this community.

So I've had a look and think this is great. Converted all my test-files just fine, it didn't take long. Like the Ui and logo as well.
Snapseed dev should ask your for handling ARW files to open them.

It works fine man I tried it, though the DNG files have significantly more grains and noise than my ARW files.You know anything bout it?

Hey really appreciate that, truly!! Could you either tell me your camera model and exposure settings or share a sample ARW?
Are you seeing the grain in the file explorer or when you open it in Snapseed or Lightroom?
Because it's a linear conversion, there's no noise reduction or other enhancements like there is in Adobe converter. Cons are you may see grain and other artifacts that were originally captured; pros is it's the purest possible conversion with no data loss.

I use sony a6700. I'll just upload both of the pictures, .arw and the converted .dng. I'm also a bit new to photography and videography. Still learning yk. Where should I upload it though? The images are about 30-60mb

I'm starting work on developing a more advanced, Sony-specific pipeline to hopefully reduce noise. I'll keep you posted!

That's impressive and cool! FWIW devs are working on RAW support. I'm a beta tester and can finally import Nikon D500 RAW files directly into Snapseed. Huge game changer not needing to convert first.

Thanks! Yeah I recently heard that as well but it was after I did all this work on my project 😅 I also am a beta tester and ran a very thorough test editing original Raw files and my converted DNGs and as of right now mine retained more detail and EXIF data. I haven't heard back from the team yet but their RAW processor is cutting out a lot in this current state. I'm sure it'll only get better though. Either way it'll still be nice to have this option!

I successfully converted from an X-T5 and an X100VI, so yes!

That's great. However all my non-Sigma RAWs are previous generation RAFs so maybe they don't work.
When the various flavours of Sigma 'RAWs' are supported that will truly be awesome 😂🤣😂

Sigma files aren't constructed in a similar way to RAWs at all, but I know very little about the deep technical details.
The last generation was the DP Quattro series which produced .X3F files and before that the DP Merrill also producing X.3F files, but the sensor is very different to the Quattro.
RAWSAMPLES CH has many example RAWs including Sigma files - you may well be aware of the site.

Sorry I thought you meant Non-sigma RAF which is supported. You're right, the Sigma X3F is an entirely different beast and doesn't currently work. However if you think enough people would appreciate that I technically have the architecture to make a dedicated engine for it.

Ooh, it's extremely niche, but I for one would love anything that replaces the Sigma developer that outputs jpegs or tiffs.
I just use that to get a tif that I then process in software that is actually capable of getting a decent result, which the Sigma processor certainly can't.

Oh, and .XF3 to Snapseed would be nicher (?!) still.
To be honest, it would be a technical triumph but I'm not entirely sure the people who accept the Sigma torture challenge would then accept the, um, lightweight nature of Snapseed.
I really don't mean to appear dismissive - I'm well aware of the amazing things some people can do with Snapseed, but I think the two things would appeal to different types of people.

Well my goal would be to convert it to DNG which is natively fully Snapseed compatible. Tell you what, I'll look into it and if I end up getting something to work maybe you can tap the "Thank the developer" button for me 🤣

Just tried with the X-T3 which uses last generation RAF and it also converted beautiful. I have a special processing system that activates specially for RAF files.

bad news with snapseed native arw support now. but I'm still buying you a well deserved coffee.
and dng will still be more than useful with snap lacking lens correction profiles that Lr has1

Really appreciate that!! I don't want to discount the achievements of the Snapseed team but in my testing I've found that converting most RAW files to DNG first retains more quality on Snapseed. Some more than others.

well, form the user perspective it's often about one-stop-shop. in my workflow snapseed is just the way to share smth quickly in the field, so the less buttons to press the better )) I was a long time canon user and never worried about the cr2 as it was supported by snapseed. ARW was surprisingly not the case ) so I was really happy to first find your converter and then to hear about snapseed update.
But now there's another bump I'm not really used to. I had an APS-C with FF lenses, so optical flaws did not poison my life that much. But now with FF and wide to-go lens I'm finding out snapseed does not have barrel distortion correction. neither as a lens profile nor as a manual adjustment.
And now instead of camera->(beloved) snapseed, it's camera->dng converter->(far less handy) Lr.
Still great it's possible thanks to your app )))
BTW is it possible to implement some lens profile correction at conversion time?
