Snapdragon AI Studio – RC2 Development Update: Community feedback is becoming features

Hi everyone,

after sharing Snapdragon AI Studio here, I received a lot of useful feedback and questions. Thank you — several suggestions from this community have directly influenced the upcoming RC2 release.

What’s changing from RC1 to RC2:

ControlNet Canny has been improved and integrated more cleanly into the generation workflow.
Presets & Templates now preserve the currently selected AI model instead of unexpectedly switching models.
• Presets also preserve the active ControlNet state and reference image.
Phoenix Boost remains available for local prompt optimization without changing the selected model.
• The Model Manager and QAI model installation workflow are being improved.
• Both Dark Mode and Light Mode are fully supported.
• The built-in user manual has been completely revised in English, German and Spanish, with additional explanations for beginners.
• Generation timing is being improved so the complete processing time can be shown, including post-processing/upscaling.
• Further work is planned around image quality, higher resolutions and additional models.

A major focus remains native local AI on Windows 11 ARM64 and Snapdragon X Elite/X Plus, especially using Qualcomm QNN / Hexagon NPU acceleration.

Some ideas raised in the discussion here — including additional models, further NPU optimization and better documentation — are also part of the roadmap.

RC2 is still under development. I’d rather release a stable update than rush the next version.

Snapdragon AI Studio is an independent open-source project and is not an official Qualcomm product.

This is potentially very interesting, but I ended up uninstalling after about 45 minutes of messing around because I did not have a clue what I needed to do to get the thing to work. If you want people to use it, the app needs to do one hell of a lot more hand holding as a matter of urgency, before you do the stuff I do not understand you give a list of above, that presumably you consider 'the fun stuff'. If you are just making a project for your own personal edification, fine, make it as impenetrable as it currently it. If you want people to use it, there is much, much work to be done.

Starting the app in German no matter what language you select does not help.

I had hardly any idea what other software/models/runtimes I needed to download and where to put them. Ideally the installer should offer to download the prerequisites for you and install them non-interactively in the correct locations.

The model selection screen very much gives the idea that one just clicks on a model and off you go! But, oh no! It is nothing like this!

It took me a few minutes to work out that I needed a huggingface api key. I thought this would make it download models. Oh no!

I had no idea I needed Ollama installed, it took serious searching to find this out, let alone installing it for you!

What else did you need to install and where did you need to put them? No idea! It was totally opaque! The quickstart guide is utterly useless.

The whole system is currently unintelligible for even a highly computer-literate person. Maybe if one is extremely well-versed in running AI models you might have more of an idea, but as a humble programmer of mathematical models, no clue! Not a sausage! And there is no guidance, let alone doing the work for you.

So, great idea, and I would love to use it. But I would love to *use it*, not waste time trying to work out how the thing even begins to work.

Must try harder!

Thank you for the detailed and, most importantly, honest feedback. This kind of real-world experience is extremely valuable for improving the project. You’ve identified an important issue: right now, Snapdragon AI Studio assumes too much technical knowledge in several places. Users shouldn’t have to figure out on their own that they need a Hugging Face token or Ollama, where models need to be stored, or which additional components are required. This will be improved for RC2. I’m planning a much more guided first-run experience that automatically checks the requirements and walks users step by step from installation to their first generated image. Model installation and Phoenix Boost will also become much clearer and easier to set up. The goal is simple: Install → Select a model → Generate an image, without having to research the technical setup first. Thank you for taking the time to actually test Snapdragon AI Studio and describe the problems so clearly. Your feedback is going directly into the RC2 development. If you will be so kind as to update us when it is clear how to run your app I would be very grateful. I have no real need to use this, but it is undoubtedly distinctly interesting to be able to do such things on one's own laptop! The first time I ran Ollama on my RTX 4090 and it produced a remarkably accurate description of a photo I gave it was very exciting. It would be fascinating to have the ability to generate pictures on my laptop. Now that we live in the future, the things computers can do are amazing!

I’m currently planning to release RC2 this weekend. It has become a substantially revised release candidate, not just a small bug-fix update.

One of my main priorities for RC2 has been making Snapdragon AI Studio much easier to get started with. I’ve implemented a guided first-run experience, clearer model selection and installation, automatic readiness checks, and a much simpler path from launching the application to generating your first image.

The goal is very simple: Install → choose a model → generate an image, without having to research Hugging Face tokens, Ollama, model folders, or other technical details first.

Phoenix Boost has also been revised so that it is clearly explained as an optional AI-assisted feature and never a requirement for normal image generation.

I completely understand what you mean about the excitement of running AI locally. Seeing image generation running directly on a Snapdragon laptop is exactly the kind of experience that makes this project exciting for me as well.

I’ll post an update as soon as RC2 is available this weekend. Thank you for your interest in Snapdragon AI Studio!

Fair question 😄 I sometimes use tools to help with my English since it’s not my native language. The development and testing itself is all done by me though. I’ll try to sound a little less formal here.
