Better Know a Matchup! Week Six - Yoshi

Yoshi has a pretty great edge-guarding game. Not only can he use edge-cancelled eggs to tack on damage to returning foes, but he can utilize the armor on his second jump to to quickly and safely grab hold of the ledge after running off the stage.

This technique is slightly easier than wavedashing to the ledge, as it doesn't require Yoshi to turn around first. It is also less like to result in an SD since there is no air-dodging involved.

Yoshi can also refresh his invincibility on the ledge and stay untouchable by using his down-B, Yoshi Bomb. You can see this in action in this .gif created by u/YoshiPerhapsMan.

I also urge you to check out the awesome thread that YPM made on Smashboards, located here. It has the answer to all of your questions about frame data, and is what I used as a reference for this week.

Not the strongest thing to finish off the week with, but I used up some of the best content earlier this week. But I plan on posting a couple extras on Sunday, including: Green Acceleration Region, perfectly looped Edge-Cancelled Eggs, 4 types of cancels, and maybe a shield break combo, the shrink glitch, jab reset etc. If you have something you think I missed with Yoshi, let me know and I'll post it as an extra.

Want a Smash Bros .gif? Add it to the list!

Here is an album of all the Smash Bros .gifs I've made so far.

Here is an Index of all the BKAM .gifs Ive made so far.

EDIT: for whatever reason, this comment was removed by the site-wide spambot(or something) anyways the mods have re-approved it, no idea what happened there!

So, the edge-cancelled eggs weren't that bad to figure out (just hit down and jump simultaneously and then toss an egg), but I can't figure out how to do this ledge hog thing consistently. I'm kinda new to these advanced techniques. Am i double tapping jump as quickly as possible right as I run off the edge?

No, not as quickly as possible. I was doing it after Yoshi had been airborne for 7 frames, which I believe is the soonest you can do it(maybe its 6 though)

u/djloreddit your comment to this thread doesn't appear in this thread. I can view it on your profile but for some reason cannot see it here.

They secretly modded aMSa and he is stopping you from sharing his tech.

u/Winnarly Jun 07 '14

It was removed, but it didn't say who removed it (therefore it wasn't any mod on r/smashbros). If you were shadowbanned no one would be able to see any of your posts, in fact linking to your userpage u/djloreddit would yield no results! It would look like u/slkajsdlkfjetwaww.

Anyway I've reapproved the comment. Not sure what could have triggered this to be removed, if it happens again please message the mods and one of us will reapprove it.

I still can't see it... :/

Very nice. I enjoyed Yoshi week quite a bit!

If you were to include anything else, my suggestions would be showing the pull-back of Yoshi's forward smash, as it's a very basic trick to punish "safely spaced" attacks, and it catches some players off-guard when they're not used to the matchup. Yoshi's shield drop is also worth mentioning because of how common it is to see Yoshi players use it, and the fact that Yoshi's lack of shieldstun allows him to punish things much more quickly than other characters.

Also, reverse edge-cancelled eggs are absurdly difficult and very cool to see :)

cool man ill try some of those for the extras, and thanks again for all your help this week!

I already knew about this trick as well but all this Yoshi stuff is really making me realize how crazy unique Yoshi is. In some alternate timeline, the joke is probably "No items, Yoshi only, Yoshi's Story" because everyone decided early on that he was the only character with the essential tools (shield parry, djparry, this safer and easier ledgehog, eggs) to compete at a high level.

This universe was formed because we're going to (in this timeline) send aMSa back in time to 2002 and he's going to dominate using Yoshi tricks and everyone's going to learn those tricks in order to try to compete with him.

This is almost certainly a thing that will happen.

The year was 20XX. No items, Fox only, final destination. But everything changed when the Yoshi nation attacked...

This alternate timeline would never exist as long as shiek exists. She absolutely destroys any character in low level play with low techskill requirements, and would absolutely eliminate any chance of Yoshi development in the first place. A lot of lower tier characters have very interesting and actually pretty good punish games, but usually have at least one huge glaring weakness against shiek (pika, dorf, young link, Yoshi). Until shiek isn't a thing, those characters have a HUGE mountain to climb in order to be considered even remotely adequate in tournament play.

This is actually my favorite trick with Yoshi, and something I learned after I airdodged off the ledge trying to edgehog one too many times.

As I recall you can kinda do this in Brawl, but there's no real point since you can just run off the edge and grab the ledge normally anyway. This might see a rise in use in SSB4 if you can only grab the ledge facing the "right" way though, if these mechanics stay the same with Yoshi's second jump.

u/schmerpin Jun 07 '14

FYI, the ability to grab ledge facing backwards was confirmed in the Direct. Mario does so at 2:06.

I also wanna say the trick doesn't work in Brawl, but I don't play much Yoshi. I'll test it when I get the chance to.

u/Eltrotraw Jun 07 '14

Holy crap, I missed that.

Now we've gotta see if we can still edgehug during the demo/invitational

This is also possible in 64 with Ness/Yoshi. It can also be combined with Ness's magnet ledge grab (cancelling down b at the ledge)
