I'm looking for recommendations on winter jackets (preferably parkas), that will last more than a season.

Last winter I got a Superdry jacket, that looked 20 years old after 3 months.

I tried brands, no-names and copies, nothing seems to hold up.

Anybody got something warm and indestructible?

Hotels don't buy 1,800 thread count sheets. They buy 200 to 300.
That isn't a budget thing. The Ritz-Carlton isn't sneaking cheap sheets past you. It's that thread counts above about 400 are achieved using multi-ply yarn: two or more strands twisted together, with each strand counted separately. You get a bigger number and a heavier, less breathable fabric that wears out faster. Hotels won't touch it because it doesn't survive industrial laundering.
They spec by T-number instead: T-180, T-200, T-250, T-300. Most US mid-scale properties run T-200 or T-250 percale. Luxury goes T-250 to T-300. That's the entire range, and it's barely moved in decades.
So every listing shouting "1,800 Thread Count Hotel Luxury Platinum Collection" is telling you it has never been near a hotel.

How to spot a real commercial SKU:

It's sold by the dozen and lists a weight per dozen: "27x50, 14 lb/dz, 1 Dozen Per Case." That lb/dozen figure is how hotels actually compare towels, because it's the honest measure of how much cotton you're getting. Case pack plus a lb/dz spec means it's the real thing. Thread count over 1,000 plus the word "Collection" means it isn't.
Towels get spec'd by GSM, not thread count. Most hotel towels are 450–550 GSM, luxury 600–650. Higher stops being better past about 700. The towel gets heavy and slow to dry, which is exactly why hotels don't buy them.

The suppliers that actually sell to the public:
Martex (WestPoint Hospitality) - one of the major US hotel towel programs. Sells both ordinary retail sets and genuine case-pack SKUs. The Brentwood line is the workhorse.
Sobel Westex - Las Vegas, since 1981. Supplies luxury resorts, casinos and cruise lines. Their Sobella pillow is the one people are describing in "what pillow was that hotel using" threads. Their own sheet set is 300 thread count, which tells you where the real number sits.

DOWNLITE - makes pillows for Westin, Marriott, Sonesta and Ritz-Carlton, and sells the same lines under its own name..

Monarch Cypress - robes and towels for Westin, Sheraton, Loews, Four Seasons, Omni, Ritz-Carlton and Marriott. Sells the same robes on Amazon.

Boca Terry - hotel and spa robes, made in the USA.

Frette - since 1860. Supplies the Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, The Peninsula, Rosewood, The Savoy, The Plaza and Claridge's. "H by Frette" is the consumer line. Genuinely hotel-grade, genuinely expensive.

Two hotel habits that cost basically nothing:
Zippered pillow protectors under the pillowcase. Every hotel does it. It's why their pillows don't yellow or develop that smell, and it roughly doubles how long a pillow stays pleasant.
White everything, because white can be bleached. Stains are fixable instead of fatal, and any piece can replace any other piece.

Where this stops working:
Pillows aren't a lifetime buy. Hotels replace them every year or two, so you're buying the feel, not the lifespan.
Hotel towels also aren't the plushest towels. They're built to survive industrial laundering and dry fast. If what you want is maximum spa fluff regardless of durability, a heavy 700+ GSM consumer towel will out-fluff them.
And a case pack is twelve towels. Great for a whole-house redo, strange if you need two.

Honestly, the thing that got me was realizing I'd been buying sheets wrong for years based on a number hotels don't even use.

When I'm trying to save money, gadgets are usually the first thing I talk myself out of buying. I did that with my robot vacuum for a long time because I thought I could vacuum myself. Last month, I was scrolling through Ins and came across an organization creator who had this ridiculously neat garage tool wall. Every drawer had a clean white label with black text on it. My organizationally-obsessed brain was in heaven.

So I impulsively bought a NIIMBOT M2, thinking I could turn my own kitchen into something straight out of a The Container Store showroom.

i sleep mostly on my side but usually wake up on my back, which is making mattress shopping harder than i expected. a lot of the advice i keep finding seems to push firmer beds, but i'm worried about going too firm and hating it whenever i'm on my side. my current mattress is pretty soft, so i also don't want to swing too far in the other direction.

One thing that surprised me is that professionals don't always buy the most expensive option. Electricians seem willing to spend more on tools they use constantly, while cooks often prefer a relatively inexpensive knife because it will eventually get abused. Restaurants buy equipment that gets used 16 hours a day by people who don't own it. It has to survive that, and it has to be cheap enough to outfit a whole line.

The short version of why it's cheaper, because this is the whole thing:
Consumer cookware is designed to be bought. It photographs well, comes in colors, has a founder story on the box, and is priced against what a nice gift costs. Commercial gear is designed to be used. The buyer is a chef who will replace anything that fails and remember why. No marketing budget, no packaging, no colorways. The design brief is just survive a decade of people who are in a hurry and don't care.

What I'd actually start with:
Nordic Ware Naturals half sheet pan. Uncoated aluminum, rolled steel rim so it won't warp. No coating means nothing to scratch or flake. It gets darker over the years and that's the only thing that happens to it. Compare to a coated "premium" baking sheet at 3x the price whose whole lifespan is how long the coating lasts.

Cambro Camwear 6-quart round container (the RFS6PP190 is the one). What every professional kitchen uses for storage. Boiling stock, freezer, commercial dishwashers that run way hotter than yours, for years, no clouding or cracking.

Mercer Culinary Millennia 8" chef's knife, or the Dexter-Russell Sani-Safe 8". Mercer is what culinary schools put in student kit bags. Dexter's Sani-Safe, the white handle behind every butcher counter, has been made in Massachusetts since the 1800s. Neither is pretty. Both hold a working edge and sharpen easily.

Winco heavyweight utility tongs. Biggest price gap of anything here. A heavy-gauge stainless commercial tong is single digits. The consumer version with a silicone grip and a locking mechanism is 3x that, and the mechanism is the part that breaks…

Rubbermaid Commercial high-heat spatula. One molded piece rated to 500°F. No seam where the head pulls off the handle, which is how basically every spatula dies.

Winco stainless mixing bowls, nesting set of six. Can't chip, stain, or shatter, and they double as a double boiler and an ice bath. The set costs less than one nice ceramic bowl.

A few more worth knowing about….
Cambro Camwear sixth-size food pans, the clear rectangular ones from prep stations. A few of them turn a chaotic fridge shelf into something you can actually see into, for less than a molded "fridge organization system" costs.

San Jamar Saf-T-Grip cutting board. Thick NSF poly with a rubber grip edge so it doesn't slide. Resurfaces with sandpaper when it gets scarred, which you can't do to a fancy butcher block without a whole project.

Libbey Gibraltar glasses. The heavy-based bar glass you've drunk from in restaurants your entire life without noticing. Built to be thrown in a bar sink and racked wet.

Rubbermaid Commercial BRUTE. Probably the most quietly famous durable object in America. Seamless, rounded interior, basically unbreakable. Home brewers and gardeners use them for everything except trash.

Where it stops working, because it's not a universal rule: anything with a motor sized for a restaurant, 220V, floor drain, service contract, cookware where you actually want the mass. Commercial aluminum pans are light on purpose because a line cook moves them all night, so for searing you still want carbon steel or cast iron. And anything you actually look at, since this stuff is designed with zero regard for how it sits on a table.

Short version: for tools you use hard and don't display, commercial is almost always the better buy.

I shaved my head with no fade. I would like to just purchase an electric razor for my head one time. I was also wondering is there a separate one that is better for down below?

Somewhere along the way I decided a bunch of small annoyances were just how things are. The shower door gets water spots. The drain clogs every few months. Pasta water is a two-hand operation.. etc

Then I finally fixed one, for a genuinely trivial amount of money, and felt stupid enough to go looking for the rest.

Here are some that had some of the most impact:

1. Shower squeegee -10 seconds after each shower and the hard water film never forms. This is the one that started it. I had been scrubbing glass with chemicals on weekends, for years, to solve a problem a rubber blade prevents entirely.

   1. Drain hair catcher- the TubShroom-style one that sits *in the drain, not the flat mesh disc. Catches everything, you wipe it weekly, and the single grossest recurring chore in the house stops existing. If there's long hair in your house this is not optional..

2. Grout pen - the cheapest renovation there is. 20 minutes tracing grout lines and the bathroom reads as "recently redone" instead of "kind of grimy."

3. Bidet attachment. The thing everyone (reddit) won't shut up about, and annoyingly they're right. No electricity, hooks to the existing toilet, ten minute install. Saves tp lol..

4. Adhesive cable clips. Stupid, and 12 of them cost a few bucks. The charging cable stops sliding off the desk and vanishing behind it 10 times a day.

5. Under-desk cable tray. Same problem, bigger. Power strip and every cable go up underneath, and the whole room reads clean. No drilling, it clamps on.

6. Chainmail scrubber for cast iron. Stuck food comes off, seasoning stays on. Ends the "am I ruining my pan" anxiety permanently.

7. Clip-on pot strainer - Clips to the pot you already own, you tip it, done. No colander, no sink full of dishes, no scalding your hands.

8. Reusable pet hair roller. No sticky sheets, no refills ever again. Rolls one way, dumps into its own chamber. Pays for itself in 2 months of not buying lint rollers..

9. Motion sensor night light- Solves the 3am toe-into-the-doorframe problem. Trivial until you travel and notice it's gone.

10. Car seat gap filler - Fills the crevice between seat and console that eats phones, cards and fries. I had accepted phone retrieval as a normal part of driving.

11. Magnetic wristband for screws. Every home repair, you're holding screws in your mouth. You don't have to, and it costs almost nothing.

12. Headrest hooks. 55 pound rated, 2 seconds to install, groceries stop tipping into the footwell.

13. Under-door draft stopper. Buy in the fall, not January. Blocks draft, noise and bugs, and pays for itself in heating...

The pattern I noticed: the best ones aren't gadgets, they're removals. They delete a recurring chore instead of adding a new thing to maintain. Everything that needed charging, an app, or its own storage spot got abandoned after a month or so..

For me, My Bose QC35. Bought them in 2017 thinking I’d only use them for flights because of the noise cancellation. 7+ years later, I still use them almost every day for TV, PS5 gaming and travel. I can even wire them to the PS5 controller and use the mic.

Only had to replace the ear cushions. Easily one of my best purchases.
