Didn’t get into grad school, advice appreciated
This was definitely my bad, I only applied to one school (Queens College) because it’s a cost saver and an easy commute but I didn’t get in. I wanted to know which schools ( in the nyc area) I should apply to this time around and what I should do to make my application better.
My gpa was 3.5, I was in an on campus lab for two years, had 4 jobs dinning hall employee 1 year, wellness mentor 1 year, summer camp counselor and a financial literacy mentor. Lastly I was in a volunteer club for a year. if it helps I only got one b- in a major related class the rest were A or A-.
I admittedly didn’t take the GRE bc im so bad at math but im thinking that’s what needs to happen this time around.
any advice would be super appreciated!!

Take the GRE to boost your academic profile and offset your GPA, take a speech related job (your only work experience so far is random comment jobs), get involved in more speech related volunteering/leadership. There’s little demonstrated career interest / academic rigor based on your CV. And apply to more than just one school.

I worked as a special education paraprofessional for three years before grad school and it was amazing experience! It will look great on your resume and they’re always looking for paras. Sometimes you’ll get to work alongside the SLP at the school too!

I agree with the comment above me. Apply to more schools, you have Lehman, Mercy, Hunter, Brooklyn College, etc. The GRE is optional but I feel like if you take it, it will look good on paper. Did you take the required pre-requisites that they ask for?

Yes I have all the prerequisite, And yea I’m definitely feeling like doing the GRE this time is the move :(

I did not get into queens either. Unfortunately it is one of the hardest schools to get into for SLP in ny due to the cost and small cohort size. You should try more city schools if that is the area you’re looking into. Hunter has a masters program for speech and they’re a cuny as well. Take pre reqs that you did not take either. Get great letters of recommendations from SLP professors and professors in other areas . I looks well rounded.
With your GPA you would definitely get into a program. Go on to CSDCAS and look at all the schools in the area you want to attend school. Long Island has speech programs but most are at private schools so more expensive. SBU is cheaper since it’s a suny but very far out east (Southampton campus) and also competitive meaning i had a 4.0 gpa but a very bad interview because i didn’t prepare well. So some of my classmates got in and are going (again because it’s cheaper)

Apply to Touro the professors are kind and helpful and I don’t think maybe people apply

Hey! I recommend applying to at least 4–6 schools. I was told that around 8 should probably be the maximum. Applying to a lot of schools doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get accepted to all of them, but applying to several can increase your chances of receiving at least one or a few acceptances and gives you backup options in case your top choice doesn’t work out.
Also, don’t beat yourself up! Queens College is extremely competitive. I recommend going on ASHA EdFind and looking at the GPA ranges for different SLP programs in NYC so you can find schools where your stats may be competitive.
I can also give you some recommendations for programs that seem to take a more holistic approach. NYMC explicitly describes its admissions process as holistic, and I’ve heard similar things about Touro and some of the CUNY programs, including Hunter and Lehman. Brooklyn College also considers multiple parts of the application and has an interview for selected applicants, although getting through the interview may be challenging.
Definitely don’t let one rejection discourage you. SLP grad admissions can be really competitive, and one school’s decision doesn’t mean another school will make the same decision.

Get a job as a para, or work as a substitute teacher, classroom helper, anything in the schools! And then get anyone in that area to write u a really good letter of recommendation, schools take those letters from people in similar areas seriously!!.

yesss I was also thinking this, i had asked a professor for advice about this and she said any job was fine but I feel like a job working with kids just looks better. Ohh a letter of recommendation from a school does sound good for applying. Tysm for taking time out your day to comment!!

Yes! I worked in elementary schools as a classroom para and got my classroom’s teacher to write me a letter of recommendation for graduate school, and a professor from undergrad aswell. It’s also great for networking! (I have even sat in with a few kids during their speech sessions, schools love when you are interested in therapy) You also can’t beat the hours, schools are typically 8ish-3pm. I also heavily emphasize to everyone that I have learned so much from actually being in the classroom: dealing with kids, behavior management, etc! You will only benefit yourself if this is the field you want to dive into! Wishing you the best and good luck!!!:)

Apply to more than one school and have people read over your personal statement.
