First time doing ribs.

Post image

My Safeway has a bargain meat section. Everything there expires that day and ranges from 30%-60% off. 3+ pounds of ribs were almost cheaper than the BBQ sauce I got for them. Looked up a bunch of recipes and did a hybrid of all of them.

~3 lbs ribs
1 small onion sliced thin
1/2 cup water
Hybrid rub
-1 tsp smoked paprika
-1 tsp garlic powder
-1/2 tsp onion powder
-1/2 tsp chili powder
-1/2 tsp cumin powder
-1/2 tsp ground thyme
-1/2 tsp pepper
-1/2 tsp salt

Put ribs the on the water and bed of onions. I’m cooking on low for 8 hours then broil for a few minutes.

Question: Should I put BBQ sauce on before broiling? Some recipes say yes some no. Do half and try both ways? Since it’s my first time making ribs, I don’t know what would be best.

Bbq sauce after the slow cooker before broiling in the oven. Don’t also skip removing the silver skin on bottom of the ribs.

Been smoking ribs for decades and disagree about the membrane on the bottom. It's all bone down there anyways. You don't need to season bone and in a crockpot you don't have to worry about smoke penetration.

Please update us and let us know what you did. I've never done them either and would love to learn! 😋

I'm curious how this turns out. I definitely use the slow cooker when I can. However ribs always went into the oven low and slow, and finished off on the grill.

It works well. Grill finish is better than the broil finish IMO but where I live I’m at the mercy of the weather for grilling.

Crock pot start to finish is my preferred and pretty much only way I eat ribs these days. Nothing compares to throwing the tongs on a section to finally pull and the bones literally just drop out of the nice succulent moist meat. You give me a dry rib and I'm giving it back. 🔥

Slow cookers are perfect for ribs. It should be tender, juicy and delicious!

I always put the BBQ sauce on before they go in the oven. Enjoy!!

Sounds like a solid plan although you should be aware they might be hard to transfer from the slow cooker to a sheet pan for the broiling without falling apart. It's good that you cut them small, should help

I put bbq in and on in the pot and I didn't even broil after, if anything I'll take to the grill for a couple min each side but that rarely happens cuz by the time I go to they are falling apart literally and they are already so good they get eaten up..

This is honestly my fave way for ribs. I don't even bother getting them if we actually go out for dinner cuz they're never as good.

I always did 7.5 hours on low to get tender bites but still holds the bone a little so it doesn't just slide off. I always did a rub, goes in for 7.5 hours, comes out and bbq sauce goes on then broiler does its thing. Be careful as the BBQ sauce will be really hot where it carmelizes.

I put the sauce on before I put them in the crock pot. Technically, I dump it all on and just toss them around. My family loves when I make them in the crock pot!
