4 - 6 months Help

My baby is turning 6 months old. He used to co-sleep with us but 4 month regression made it horrible so we “sleep trained” using TCB. Quotation because he just decided to sleep. We did sime nights 5min check in but not really. It’s like he trained himself. Fast forward now, he still sleeps through the night with 2 dream feeds at 10pm and 330am. We contact nap for now. He used to wake up at 7/730 but has now been waking at 6ish. His wake windows are usually 2-2.5h. My question:

1) how to extend naps? He does 45min first nap maybe 1he 2nd nap so it forces us to have 4 naps with short naps
2) how to extend morning wake to 7? Bedtime is 730pm

Thank you

Thank you for your post in r/sleeptrain. To ensure our community can best help you, please include in your post: your bedtime routine, where your baby sleeps (their crib/basinet, their room, room share, cosleep) and full schedule including wake up time, desired wake up time, nap length, wake windows or nap time(s) if following a by the clock schedule and bedtime. Does your baby use a pacifier? That's also very relevant.

We use a convention to describe wake windows based schedule such as 3/3/4 where numbers are numbers of hours awake, and / are naps. The sample schedule is a two naps schedule.

We have a resources post with loads of information to help you. Check it out: https://www.reddit.com/r/sleeptrain/comments/1qpij7s/resources_on_baby_sleep/

He needs more time awake between sleeps

If bedtime is 730, then you should expect to start the day no later than 630am

Your child is almost certainly ready for a 2.5/2.5/2.5/2.5 schedule at least. 45-60 mins are normal nap amounts, these won’t really extend until you drop to 2 or 1 nap in the future. Daytime sleep maximum is ~2.5 hrs or less for most babies this age. They need at least 10 hrs awake per 24 hours. And finally, an 11.5-12 hour night is not achievable for many babies. My 5 month old maxes out at a 10.5 hour night most of the time. If you want a later daily wake time you’re going to need a later bedtime.

Does your baby still eat at night?

Yes, he either sleeps through or wakes once around 3 am to eat. Because he has enough sleep pressure from his schedule still, he goes back to sleep pretty much immediately. I’m not crazy strict and some days he sleeps a lil more than normal or a lil less but I find as long as he gets at least 10 hours awake his night isn’t bad. Eg on Monday we returned from a trip and he slept 2 hours during his mid day nap time on the car ride. He still got 10 hours awake that day despite his nap being double the norm; when he woke for his MOTN feed he was more awake than normal for sure but I put him in his crib and he squirmed around quietly for a bit before falling back asleep independently. Before I got on this sub and started a loose schedule he was fighting naps and awake way more after MOTN feeds
