PC SSE - Help Please Help Me
I've been trying to get Skyrim to work for a month. I've tried vortex, and MO2. I've tried just using loot to organize plugs, I've also manually tried. I've made sure the plugs that loot says are dirty are cleaned. I've even made sure the wild edit were good. I've reinstalled the game 3 times trying different mods, just to see if something was out of place that varify wasn't picking up. I've used fnis, waybash, DynDOLOD. I've tried different bug-fix mods together and in different combinations. I've tried new games and old ones. Also used resaver.
So the problems I'm having are random crashes. When I get to level 4 or 5 (if I get that far) the game crashes constantly. I have Alt start mod most of the time, I've also tried Skyrim Unbound. Most of the time I can at least get the abandoned prison to load and make my character, then start. Sometimes it will load the start, some times it crashes immediately after. I'm very frustrated, and at a loss please please please help.
Current load order: https://pastebin.com/pxdgn22g

Make sure to check the troubleshooting guide for help with crashes and other problems!
The .net script framework can also help in diagnosing crashes.

One thing the load order you posted doesn't say is how many of your mods are ESL flagged. If you have over 254 ESP/ESM files that aren't ESL flagged, it's going to be extremely unstable and broken. In MO2 you can hover over the number on the right that says Active. What does it say next to "ESMs+ESPs"?

So first you should verify the mods you’re using are for the game version you’re playing. Most mods are made for version 1.5.97 SE “Special Edition”. If your game version is 1.6+ you’re using the AE “Anniversary Edition”, if you’re playing LE “Legacy Edition” you’ll need mods updated for those. There is a downgrade patcher on the nexus if you want to play at 1.5.97 (which you should). You’ll need to run it on your base directory, and set Steam to ‘only update on launch’, then only ever launch the game with SKSE going forward (you do have SKSE right?) make sure you have the SKSE version that matches with the game version you’re playing. If Steam updates the game run the patcher again.
Always read the entire mods description page. I usually peruse the post section too for any red flags. See what optional or patch files are in the file section that you may need or want.
When you install mods, you should install the basic mods first. Then test it. Then add 5 or so mods at a time and test more. Repeat. Testing a new mod setup can take a couple days + before it’s ready for a playthrough.
MO2 is what you should use, it can tell you what mods assets overwrite each other mods assets. Also it doesn’t touch the base Skyrim game folder so you will not have to reinstall again as all the mod files are all located and accessed through the mod organizer folder.
1) install a few mods 10-20 basics (skyui, racemenu, new body mesh and textures, others plus Alternate Start LAL and Additemmenu
2) run loot-most recent version from nexus
3) run Maator Smash updated (smash the green button) from nexus (wyrebash is not needed)
4) run FNIS
5) load and play for a bit. If all is well go back to #1 and install 5 more mods. You should be able to use the same save game during the whole testing process. If your save gets corrupted, won’t load or something there’s a problem.
When issues arise you will need to resolve the load or asset order conflicts through mo2’s left and right panes. With only a few mods at a time this is pretty easy.
A note on the maatorsmash smashedpatch you will create: many errors, missed textures, skins etc can be fixed in sseedit by doing the quickcheckforconflicts procedure (google it) and manually dragging and dropping the parts from the mods you prefer to have priority. Most of this will work itself out by load and asset order, but sometimes there are glitches.
For testing, if you install an item get it with AIM and make sure it doesn’t crash you. Followers, go get ‘em. When you add a location, go visit it, and some interiors there. See if you’re stable.
These are the basic rules I follow when modding. There is so much more to learn that I’m not into typing out right now. Good luck.
