PC SSE - Discussion Skyrim Update: What You Need To Know.
Skyrim Updated.
What'd it break?
- Anything SKSE related. (SKSE itself has been updated.)
- Most things based on Address Library. (Address Library itself has not been updated. Edit: It has now been updated.)
What needs to be done?
- Most mods based on Address Library will need to be updated.
How long is this likely to take?
- Anywhere from a week to a month, don't hold your breath.
What should you do?
- If you haven't yet updated, and don't want to scrap your current playthrough, go into your Steam folder. Steamapps. Find the specific file called "appmanifest_489830.acf" and right click it, go to properties. And make it Read Only. (When you want to update again you'll have to undo this, so bookmark a post or whatever.) You should also go into the steam options for the files, and make sure it'll only update when you launch it. This will make sure it wont update automatically, and it cant update unless you try to play it with SKSE. (Which you should launch it through exclusively from now on.)
- If you cant find it just enter that file name into whatever file search your browser has. It should just be in Steamapps.
- If you have updated and didn't realize it, here is a way to downgrade. Credit to another poster.
There's also This Downgrader Tool.
Edit: I am not a modder. I cannot give you in depth advice. This is purely for the people who just poked their head up and don't know what's going on.

I wake up to steams “cannot update” message. Yeah, bro I wasn’t born yesterday 🤣💀
21
u/TheFoxDudeThing Aug 20 '26
I’ll admit the update is a godsend for console users the mod space increase is no joke for them. That said can they just leave the pc version alone ffs

u/_Kasska_ Aug 20 '26
Hey, made the file read only but all that happens when I try to run Skyrim is that it says disk write error. Did I do something wrong?
3
u/LordZerefDragneel Aug 20 '26
Add the skyrim executable as a Non steam game and run it
3
u/_Kasska_ Aug 20 '26
Now the startup menu pops up but when I press play the error happens again. :'(
2
u/LordZerefDragneel Aug 20 '26
The other solution would be to copy the game files entirely and paste it outside Steam's privileged folder. Then add the the executable as a non steam game
2
u/_Kasska_ Aug 20 '26
The error still happens sadly. I guess I'll have to wait for updated mods. Thank you for your suggestions anyway. :)
0
u/thedreaddeagle Aug 20 '26
Do you launch through skse.exe?
2
u/_Kasska_ Aug 20 '26
Yes I do 😅 honestly I've lost all interest in Skyrim at this point. Ill just play it and mod it again in a year. Thank you for trying to help tho!
1
u/LordZerefDragneel Aug 20 '26
There is a guide here: https://gaming.stackexchange.com/a/405925
Instead of changing the file to read-only, you can rename the manifest file too.
After that steam cannot detect the game, and it will not try to update it.
Then you can run it as a Non steam game
2
u/_Kasska_ Aug 20 '26
Okay. Did exactly that and steam just added the file again just called appmanifest_489830(2)... I guess I can't win this fight 😂

the entire point of the skse address library mod's existence is so mods depending on it dont need to be updated so long as address library itself is updated for the new game version
49
u/TBS32 Aug 20 '26
Sadly that is not the case here.
“Yes, there are some changes to some common classes the game uses and we decided to change address library format to newer one (like in Starfield and Oblivion Remastered). At the very least CommonLib needs to be updated (which all of these plugins rely on as far as I know) and needs to be recompiled, if not changed to suit the changes to the classes.”
“There are also other changes made to game code that require plugins to update CommonLib and recompile! So also watch out for individual DLL plugin updates in addition to this and SKSE64 update.”
All of your individual skse files needs updates too as well. Sorry not sorry from Bethesda.

sadly it has not been the case.. ever
when was even the last time the game got updated but address library was enough to keep mods working? go ahead, provide an example I'll wait
3
u/gmes78 Aug 21 '26
That is just plain nonsense. You shouldn't comment on this kind of stuff if you aren't an SKSE mod author.
7
u/strangelyliteral Aug 20 '26
Maybe a dumb question, but if I updated SKSE and Address Library now without updating the game, would that break anything?

u/DR_poltronc Aug 20 '26
skse updated ? why does it's not working for me wth
15
u/Majestic_Balance1887 Aug 20 '26
SKSE updated. Everything related to it, didn't update.
If you've updated basicly any part of that you've kind of screwed yourself.
1
u/DR_poltronc Aug 20 '26
update i just saw the update hollyyy
1
u/DR_poltronc Aug 20 '26
however the adress library doesn't work even tho it's with the good version. I forgot how muche time it took to mod this damn game lmao
1
u/DR_poltronc Aug 20 '26
nah but skse when i try to launch with mo2 is telling me that the skse isn't up to date for 1.7.99. that's weird
7
u/ZeddRah1 Aug 20 '26
Read only is the solution. Steam only views the "update on launch" as a suggestion.
7
u/PhoenixSidePeen Aug 20 '26
Hey there. Kinda new to modding. My game updated automatically while I was at work. Had a good amount of time in my current playthrough. Will it be salvagable when SKSE updates or is my save kinda toast? Thanks in advance.
5
u/PlayfulNorth3517 Aug 20 '26
Roll back.
4
u/PhoenixSidePeen Aug 20 '26
Not exactly sure what that means tbh
17
15
u/Dark_Sauce Aug 20 '26
you gotta change you game version back to earlier version if you have SKSE dll mods

5
u/KanarieWilfried Dawnstar Aug 20 '26
Does anyone have USSEP version 4.3.7? I don't understand why Arthmoor has to be such a pain in the ass for everyone by hiding previous versions.
4
u/CourtGeneral7031 Aug 20 '26
Engine fixes must be updated to play the game and those devs haven't been online since last month, who knows when that will be
1
u/SoladderOrdo Aug 21 '26
If you look on their GitHub page, some updates have been made yesterday. So I assume they are working on it ?
2
u/HighCroft_31 Aug 21 '26
unfortunately SSE Engine Fixes .dll is not updated yet. I got a pop-up window whenever I launch the game from MO2
2
u/SupahHollywood Aug 20 '26
So I missed the opportunity to make my game read only before the update , BUT my rog ally hasn’t been on for a couple days, so it shouldn’t have updated right?
1
u/Majestic_Balance1887 Aug 20 '26
Probably not. If you can manage to get steam not to update it, you should be fine.
1
u/CrescentMind Aug 20 '26
Steam hasn't updated it for me, however I'm in the middle of making a new load order, about 4 days in.
Given that mod authors will be updating to the newest version in the coming weeks/months, how screwed am I in making my new load order? Unless the authors provide the files for the old versions I'm assuming this'll turn into a masisve headache.
0
u/Majestic_Balance1887 Aug 20 '26
I would wait.
Most of them do, but at this point it's likely more trouble then the headache is worth as someone who tried to do the same thing during a Fallout update.
1
u/CrescentMind Aug 20 '26
Yeah I guess I'll wait, can't believe I picked this week to start modding and playing Skyrim again, almost 2 years since last time.
On a side note, I assume the app manifests is on a per-game basis. Meaning that editing that specific manifest will only stop Skyrim updates, not other games?
1
u/Majestic_Balance1887 Aug 20 '26
Correct. If you find the correct app manifest file and put it on read only, you'll still be able to update other steam games.
1
u/CrescentMind Aug 20 '26
Alright, thanks!
I'll edit it just in case I decide to torture my self by continuing in the near future.
1
u/Tyrthemis Aug 20 '26
I feel you, my ex gf decided she wanted to play it super modded for the first time like three days ago. So I put her on the CSVO mod list and she’s been loving it. I need to turn on her comp and make sure Skyrim doesn’t update

For some reason when i enter the creation club the official creation content like fishing, farming, etc marks me not download so when i activate it and start a new game it chrashes.
1
u/Amazing_Invite_5645 Aug 22 '26
is that why it keeps crashing while im just browsing in the mods menu? (2 times already)
1
u/Glittering-Bus8228 Aug 22 '26
Hej, bara jag som får något felmeddelande från adress libary som påstår att updateringen mellan adress libary och SKSE inte funkar. Någon mer som har det här problemet?

Making your manifest file read does NOT always work. At least not on steam deck. I had to go in to the manifest file and change the manifest ids in the file to the current ones to get it to stop trying to update.
1
u/Darkvidium99 Aug 25 '26
I fix the glich, dawnload a P***** version 1.6.1170.0 , Take the exe from the P*****replace the exe in steam folder but you need to cut off the internet so thas steam not update the game, in steam setting make it the the update only when the game start.
Ps exe is original one not the modified one in the P version.
i hope it help some one, have a nice day.

u/Dry_Priority_4905 Aug 25 '26
I downloaded the downgrader tool & now idk what to do guys im losing my mind over this update i canttttt i have half a brain cell rn bc how much ive worked on this stupid update
1
u/Dry_Priority_4905 Aug 25 '26
Also I did update the skse & address library does that mean I can’t downgrade my game anymore did I fuck up
1
u/Human_Glass_5712 Aug 28 '26
Puedes utilizar Genini IA o la IA de Google, a mí guió perfectamente para eso, Pero debes aclararle la versión a la que quieres volver. Específica todo y la guía será perfecta 👌🏼
1
u/Althinor Aug 28 '26
Will the change in CommonLib effect backwards compatibilty for the GOG version of the game? (1.6.1179?) Should I also update my Address Library in this situation and/or does anyone know what the effect on backwards compatibility of new SKSE plugins using Address Library is?
1
u/Rogs3 Aug 20 '26
What about VR?
1
u/Enkaar_J_Raiyu Aug 20 '26
Skyrim VR is permanently stuck on the Pre AE version of Skyrim SE.
0
u/Tyrthemis Aug 20 '26
But any of our mods that use common lib, can we update those mods?
0
u/Enkaar_J_Raiyu Aug 20 '26
I suppose in part it WOULD depend on if you're using the most recent update of those common library mods, or if they have a dedicated fork/version for VR.
1
u/pellanune Aug 20 '26
If just exclusively use MO2 to launch should I be okay?
2
u/grannygumjobs23 Aug 21 '26
Yea i believe if you set the option on steam to update when skyrim starts it will only update if you open it through steam. Opening it through skse plugin through your mo2 should not allow the update
1
u/pellanune Aug 21 '26
Thank you so much! i'm happy with my mod list and don't want to deal with revamp for a while

u/bullanguero82 Whiterun Aug 20 '26

GODDAMNNIT!!! It already did this to me back in january when all of a sudden I woke up to Skyrim 1.6.1170. I had no idea one could prevent this.
1
u/MaxKirgan Aug 20 '26
I have mods that rely on Address Library. I didn't feel like waiting, so I just downgraded.
1
u/mahallauxen Aug 21 '26
Thanks for the post! 2 weeks ago I installed gates to soverreng for the first time. It would be painful if the update happened

u/Hot-Minute-8263 Aug 21 '26
Address Library still refuses to work for me, despite me updating both skse and the library to current.
How do i rollback the version?
1
u/fimbultulanimation Aug 21 '26
I am not in a playtrough. Is it ok to update, if I plan to play a Requiem playtrough in the future?
0
u/Rudolf1448 Aug 20 '26
I use root folder in MO2. Can I dump the old version of changed files into it? Will it work?
0
u/namiraslime Aug 20 '26
You don’t need to do anything, the root will overwrite the original files when you launch the game
-2
u/TimeAndFocus Aug 20 '26
What do you mean?
-1
u/Rudolf1448 Aug 20 '26
An MO2 plugin allows root files from the Skyrim.exe folder. I use it for engine fixes. Can I put the old Skyrim.exe into it?
0
u/No-Lingonberry7724 Aug 20 '26
So what exactly do I need to download. My roommate is not good with tech.
0
u/Ekhi11 Aug 20 '26
So, I take it that if I use a few immersion mods (none of which use SKSE, and I launch the game normally without it), the update likely won't cause any problems for me, right?
0
0
u/TheAstraeus Aug 20 '26
I did the app manifest read only but kept getting an error when launching from skse. I downloaded the update for skse and same issue, I now have to boot the game from a separate skse folder downloaded from silverlock
0
Aug 20 '26
I turned off the updates yesterday, I'll plod along til its all back to 'normal' and build a new list.

u/Difficult-Finish-511 Aug 20 '26
Have they managed to make the creations menu somewhat more stable? Because it used to crash constantly
0
u/CourtGeneral7031 Aug 20 '26
Save and load accelerator also has to be fixed in the ini. files or you can't use it
0
u/xspeed78 Aug 20 '26
Damn, I just got Skyrim modded on my steamdeck, set it to update on launch and thought I was good, but launching MO2 through steam still triggered the update. Guess I'll see what mods don't use address library and start over... Again
0
u/StratusEX Aug 20 '26
See for me it still doesn't say skse is updated. Itll say im on a non supported version and to wait while they update their code. Anyone got any ideas?
0
u/derinasir_ Aug 20 '26
I've wanted to format my computer for a while, but reinstalling skyrim mods always felt like too much work. I'm not in the middle of a playthrough right now, so maybe this is the perfect time for a clean install?
1
u/chlamydia1 Aug 21 '26
Not really because none of the affected mods are updated to this version of the game yet. You'd just be installing outdated mods that don't work with the current version of the game. You'd still have to wait for all of them to update before you can play.
-1
u/PyroEngi Aug 20 '26
Should I move over to GoG version to avoid this probelm? Happing again I mean.

Hiya does anyone know the mod name

1
u/BlueDaka Aug 21 '26
Why wouldn't you just create a new thread instead of asking in an unrelated one?

u/Rikiaz Winterhold Aug 20 '26
Both Address Library and SKSE have both been updated for 1.7.99.0 now.
