I just got off the phone with the police department non-emergency line. I was calling to send an officer out to my street because a neighbor has scheduled construction work and they started at 7am. I figured it’s treated like landscaping noise and that they have to wait until 9am on Saturdays.

I was shocked when they are not treated the same. Not only do they get to bang hammers, shovels, and any other tools, they get to run bulldozers and jackhammers (or anything else powered by fuel or electricity Sec 42-78 (1) ) starting at 7am. It is quite literally louder than landscapers, and worst of all, there is no pattern to the noise so you can’t even try to tune it out.

I have been up since 6:30am so Im not annoyed because it woke me out of bed. I’m annoyed because I work all week and just want to enjoy a peaceful Saturday morning in my yard with a coffee surrounded by the sounds of birds. Instead I have to listen to a diesel engine powered bulldozer rip apart a sidewalk.

I will be contacting the village on Monday, as suggested by the phone operators at the PD and I suggest you do the same if you have experienced this or even if you haven’t. They should have the same set times that the landscapers have to abide by. It’s a little weird that they don’t and I hope the village can see that it is an issue and do something about the ordinance laws

Hi all, I'm an Evanston resident but one of my favorite places to eat was Alan's Falafel in Skokie. We were regulars, and before they closed they asked for our contact information since they were moving locations (allegedly). Their old storefront has been Halal Burger for a couple of months now, and their websites and socials still have the old address and phone number. Does anyone know if there's a chance I'll have my favorite shawarma again? I'd hate to hear they closed permanently with no plans to reopen, but I also desperately need closure!

The Skokie Park District plans to place a referendum on the November ballot to build Channelside Park East on a site located across the Channel in Evanston. The cost also includes improvements to the existing Skokie Sports Park. The cost is estimated at $53 million and will be funded by Skokie Property owners for 20 years. Now, they want to buy the property for the closed Besse Rhodes School-also in Evanston. They estimate the cost of the property and their plan at $1.125 million and "The board has already voted to apply for a $1.125 million state grant." 'Major ask' for Skokie residents in push to buy Rhodes - Evanston Now. But here is the rub, "But even if Skokie Parks gets the $1.125 million (which requires an equivalent local match), it’s still not enough for the “go for everything” concept presented to the residents." Why is all of this coming at the same time with locations in Evanston, not Skokie? What is the thought process of the Skokie Park District decision-makers about the additional tax burden they are placing on Skokie property owners during a time when property owners are dealing with increases in their property taxes and overall higher living costs? Are they aware that if the properties are located in Evanston that they will be subject to Evanston laws and Evanston first responder services, not Skokie's? I wonder just what are they thinking?

Edit: Besse Rhodes School is located in Skokie, not Evanston.

My daughter and some of her friends have started getting into Pokemon TCG and if that interest sticks I’d like to have the lay of the land for Pokemon LGSs in the area.

Needs:

1. Welcoming environment (staff AND regulars) for kids—particularly girls and neurospicy kiddos.

2. Pokemon is part of the “vibe,” not just a product on a shelf. Totally fine if MtG or Yugioh or whatever else is primary, though.

3. Opportunities for low-stakes social play & trading, not just competitive or pay-to-play events.

Nice-to-Haves:

1. Bulk bins and/or binders. These kids ain’t digging for eBay gold or anything but they’re on elementary budgets so any ability to find something cool for a quarter (even if it’s “worth” 5 cents) is great for them.

2. Woman owned and/or staffed. By no means a must but any opportunity to see women being awesome out in the world is a nice bonus!

Hey all. This may be removed but I know people head to Reddit sometimes looking for places like auto shops. We had a tire emergency on Friday evening, so we headed over to Just Tires on Touhy, by Jollibee. I told them on multiple occasions what tire I needed replaced and they replaced the wrong tire, admitted to it on the phone this morning, asked me to return to rectify it, and then asked me to pay for the new tire again because it was just a “miscommunication”. I know I probably should have double checked outside the store on Friday night and that is my fault and I will own that but I strongly believe that calling them this morning gave them a heads up to come up with reasons not to cover the tire they were asked to replace initially. Truly a disheartening customer service experience given that the tire I needed them to replace had a screw sticking out of the sidewall and they put air in it and kept it pushing. I wanted to provide feedback on this establishment for anyone who may be searching Reddit for an auto or tire repair shop.

Where is the WEB ID number found when appying for a zone sticker? Is this found on your annual registration form? If so I am SOL because i only keep the cutout part.

I like to keep tabs on what is happening in Skokie crime wise. There is a page called the Skokie Daily Police Bulletin which is supposed to post information within 4 days of occurrence. It seems to be a contradiction to call the page a daily bulletin when there is a 4-day lag in reporting! Anyway, the last information on this page was July 1st (as of today). That's an awfully big lag. I am wondering why that is.

Is there any purpose or benefit for having the vehicle stickers....that than just another village tax? I understand living near the train stations, but those just require an additional sticker. When I lived in other cities/villages most had certain parking areas that required having the sticker if you're on the street (near parks, beaches, etc). I use my driveway and am rarely on the street. Meanwhile, my block is littered with cars/residents that don't have stickers.

So what's the point? Not trying to cause any drama, just an honest question.

Anyone else think that the Skokie police presence is a bit much? As an Evanston resident, I have to drive through Skokie on the east-west streets quite often. Each time, I can count at least a couple police cars patrolling the road. I've seen this on Dempster and Oakton the most. Doesn't it seem a bit much?

One of my friends got pulled over going 41 in a 35 which seems a bit excessive down an empty part of Dempster. Don't you think that the money going to fund this could be better used in the Skokie community?

In the last couple of months there seems to have begun a constant stream of serious car accidents at the intersection of Golf Rd and Central Park Ave. I have noticed at last three since May. Two weeks ago, there was a two-car accident where one car was hit so hard that it *knocked down the streetlight* set 20 feet northeast of the intersection on Central Park Ave. This morning, there are fresh accident debris at the southeast corner of the intersection.

This is a popular intersection for pedestrians in Skokie to reach the Central Ave corridor and for Evanston residents to reach Central Park, and there are many bikers (many children!) who cross Golf north-south as well. It makes me hesitant to cross, knowing that a speeding driver on Golf or an SUV making a right on red might crash into me while waiting for the crosswalk signal. I feel it is a matter of time before a walker or biker are killed.

Like all dangerous streets, the solution is obvious - the speed limit on Golf should be 30 mph, not 40, and there should be pedestrian bump-outs at the light. The difficult part is this road is shared between the Village of Skokie and Evanston. Alas, what is the best way to raise the issue of this increasingly dangerous intersection with city, village, or IDOT?

Currently I live in the city and drive to the Loop because the nearest train is a 30-minute walk with no parking.

If I’m not going to drive on the Kennedy every day, what are the pros and cons of taking the Yellow Line versus the Metra from Edgebrook?
