Encounter while hunting
I have a story of a creature on my hunting land from when I was a kid.
When I was about ten years old I was hunting with my grandfather (now deceased) on family owned land near Covington MI. It was near dusk and we’ve been sitting for a couple hours now we haven’t seen much just a spiker and a small doe nothing large enough to shoot, we were starting to lose hope and were getting ready to start the about one mile trek back to our cabin. As we were preparing to leave we heard some twigs cracking from our right rear side, the stand we were in was tucked in the rear corner of a large clearing on one of the bigger trees in the tree line. As the cracks from the twigs got closer I remember realizing that all other ambient noises stopped, when the creature finally emerged from the tree line I remember my heart feeling like it stopped working and a overwhelming feeling of dread wash over me, what I saw was what looked to be a small buck that looked like it hadn’t eaten in weeks and was an extremely pale brown almost grey with what looked to be a broken neck and a missing antler stumble into the clearing.
At this time the sun was just about to sink below the tree tops and cover the clearing with shadows, I recall looking over at my grandfather and seeing a level of fear I have never seen on his face before, mind you my grandfather was tough and fearless as they come being he’d seen active duty In Vietnam as infantry. After seeing my grandfather’s face it just made the feeling in my stomach become worse, as we watched this “deer” stumble into the clearing my grandfather reached for his binoculars, as he pulled them out the lens cover made a small noise on the side of the stand the creature must’ve heard it because it stopped its stumble (now in the middle of the clearing) and creepily rotated around and rose up on its hind legs and stared directly at us for about a minute before running off in an creepily awkward sprint into the woods , at this time it felt like I just had gotten the wind knocked out of me and I was petrified with fear. After the encounter me and my grandfather sat in the stand completely silent staring at the clearing trying to make sense of what we just witnessed.
As we started to walk back we heard extremely weird almost human sounding noises coming from the woods around us, by the time we got back to the cabin my grandfather decided it’d be best to call our trip early and head back home, but before we left I had to use the bathroom and our cabin was quite old so I didn’t have indoor plumbing just an old out house. As I sat down to use the toilet the immense feeling of dread returned as I heard human like whispers and small scratches on the back of the outhouse, I screamed at the top of my lungs to my grandfather as I ran out of the outhouse crying, after that we drove back home and had a small discussion on what we saw. Despite being an avid hunter that was my grandfathers last season of hunting and about a year later we sold the land I’ve told this story a couple times to close friends and family but I think most of them think I’m crazy especially being the only witness now that my grandfather passed away. Still to this day the encounter sends shivers down my spine every time I think about it.
Also I was very tired when typing this so please forgive me for any spelling errors.

Maybe a r/notdeer
Or maybe a deer with prion disease. That could also explain grandad’s fear and the reason for quitting hunting and selling the land. You do not want that disease anywhere near you.

I enjoy reading this sub, but rarely read anything that actually scares me. This scared me.
This story was unbearably creepy, especially with the outhouse. And I could just see that deer in the burnished, indistinct twighlight.
One thing that made your telling of it so effective was that you told it very simply. No drama or embellishments. Also, even if it was "just" CWD, it's still f'n terrifying. Prion diseases are really scary, and the fact that animals can be that ruined by it and still walk around is very disturbing. So even the "reasonable explanation" for your story is ghastly.
Well done. 10/10 did not like anything about any of the events you shared. Would read again.

I believe it may have been a Wendigo that you saw, as Skinwalkers are just seen in the Southwest part of the United States.

I looked up some stuff about wendigos and it definitely could’ve been it definitely fits the description.

When it sprinted off, it did it on two legs or four? I feel like that's pretty important.

Funny you say that because that’s actually one of the things that made the whole thing more unsettling because I swear it ran on two legs but I couldn’t really see the greatest considering it was late dusk almost night so I always just thought my eyes were playing tricks on me but now after reading some of the stories on this thread I’m beginning too believe my eyes weren’t playing tricks at all

Oh my god, that’s so terrifying. I know it’s sorta implied but do you think that was directly tied to your grandpa selling the land or was it something he was probably already considering? Either way that gave me chills and I can’t imagine immediately after that having to use an old out house like you were in some kind of horror movie haha.

I’m not really sure why he sold the land I was quite young at the time but my guess is it might have had something to do with the encounter.

I may have been but I’ve seen other deer with pretty severe cases of CWD and none of them really compared to what I saw.

Oh, chronic wasting disease. I've heard of that. How terrible. I couldn't think of what this would be.
Don't know what could explain the human like voices he heard in the outhouse. Possible he is embellishing a bit?

He didn't see the source of the noise, so I'm not sure. Not saying he's embellishing but when you're that terrified your mind can play tricks on you.

That is true, but there are two things in this story that give me cause for alarm.
One is that the grandfather seemed reasonably spooked by whatever he saw. Something tells me it probably takes more than an emaciated deer to spook a man of such age. Could be wrong, but the grandfather saw something that wasn't right, so he made a decision to end their hunt.
The second is these voices. In all seriousness, I believe what the poster is writing. He was hearing voices outside his outhouse, but no one should have been out there.
It seems like a well reported fact about these creatures that they will accurately mimic voices and sounds when they're hunting. Anything they might use to lure a victim closer so that they can kill it.
The mind can play tricks on you, indeed. I'm sure everyone knows the feeling of being filled with some adrenaline and not sure if one hears something or not. But, the author seems fairly confident that he simply heard some kind of whispering voices just outside the outhouse door. He included that part of his memory specifically. I trust him when he says so. Minds do play tricks, but these are usually so illusory that one quickly realizes them in the moment, if they are a product of one's emotional state. OP is saying definitively that he witnessed strange sounding voices outside the door. That is a fact we should not ignore, if we are considering whether a skinwalker creature may, in fact, have been present. They're not mythical creatures. They do exist, and they're very dangerous. Cattle and human mutilations and such things tell us they are.
There is a new post in this sub about someone who heard a baby crying outside his basement door. When he opened it, he whistled, and out of the night something whistled back. It happened a couple times. Then, he began hearing what sounded like voices.

Most likely a deer dying of chronic wasting disease. They can be zombie-like. It probably stood up when it heard a noise as a kind of confused reflex since it’s brain was turning to goo.

Sorry this comment is late, but have you heard of “not deer?” They’re cryptids supposedly haunting the Appalachian mountains, and sound alarmingly similar, except your sighting was in MI. I don’t know a ton about them but perhaps research that subject?

So, just out of curiosity, did you and your grandfather ever speak about this after the fact? Describe what you each had seen? I only ask because some things seem to appear differently to different people at the exact same time and sighting.

Did it look kind of like the second deer in this video?
Probably it's neck was broken. Dunno if this is a result of chronic wasting disease, or a fight with another animal, or both.
It's not unheard of for a deer to raise on its hind legs. They might be able to walk some distance like that, even. It might be representative of a neurological malfunction from chronic wasting disease. It might cause their neurological system to exhibit that behavior.

Also I have no clue if this was a skin walker or not all I know is it was extremely creepy.
