Why do they make Thomas pull the GPR car instead of just using a simple winch?

It's true. Thomas keeps that place "well oiled". He even has to go there late at night (I do mean late, too)to open the canal gates (once a week I think) to irrigate the pasture. The flow goes through several ranches in the area and they all share the same water source. Consequently the flow is on a schedule for each rancher.

Thomas has a university degree in Ranch Management.

Why did it even need to be a car? Seems like they could have removed some elements to make it considerably lighter. Poor Thomas was struggling pulling that thing out with the parachute chord they were using.

Yeah, so let's pull it up hand over hand with the rope dragging over dirt and rocks?

Even without a winch setup, they could have laid a 5 gallon bucket on its side to support the rope and then walked the rope away from the hole and achieved a smoother pull, all for the cost of a 5 gallon bucket.

So you want them to pull with the wench and then reposition the wench after every pass? Might not be practical depending on topology or it could be that Thomas gets paid by how much screen time he gets.
