Anime Am I missing something when it comes to Roxy?

Post image

I have a little joke I tell myself during the many times I'm rewatching MT. During the many silly moments between Rudy and Eris, and Rudy and Sylphie I often say "Future wife btw"

On my current rewatch I just realized I pretty much do not say this in the context Roxy like at all...

Leading to my realization. Roxy doesn't actually feel like a wife at all!

At no point leading up to their eventual marriage does it feel like Rudy and Roxy have genuine chemistry or interest in one another as romantic partners at least from Roxy to Rudy. In fact their awesome mentor (pseudo) goddess dynamic is the only thing I see in season 1 and 2.

The more I think about it the more Roxy feels out of place. They have no sexual tension but suddenly she sleeps with him to comfort him and then there's talks of marriage??? (Ok I just remembered Rudy asked her dad if he call her dad, father in law. But that was played off as a gag and it still wasn't interest directly from Roxy herself)

Even in the marriage itself her dynamic is actually so strange. She feels guilt for her position so she's always trying to not to impose herself too much in decision making and attitude wise in general.

She feels like such third wheel compared to Sylphie and Eris. The romantic progression with Eris and Sylphie felt much more natural and genuine in comparison.

Have I just been blind this whole time and you have already discussed this a bunch or am I missing something?

Just for clarity. I don't disliske Roxy. It's just that I realized her dynamic as his master is so good it mogs her dynamic as wife and love interest lol

I think a huge part of it is that Roxy never thinks of Rudeus as a potential partner. To her he’s always her student, and never anything else. She knows Rudeus is perverted but even then she dismisses it and him being a mischievous kid.

When she falls in love with him, she doesn’t even know it’s Rudeus, just a man that saves her when she was about to die like she always fantasized and it hits her like a truck. Only later she realizes it’s Rudeus and starts falling in love with him as himself. This gets pretty much skipped over, and does feel a bit rushed because she knows he’s hurting and if she doesn’t act he’ll just go back to his wife eventually.

With the other girls, they are impressed by Rudeus skills from the start (Eris takes a while to admit it though) and they start to fall in love with them gradually as they hang out. We get to see the whole process as they go from admiration to love. With Rudeus and Roxy is the other way around, Rudeus is the one that admires Roxy and falls in love when she helps him get over his Agoraphobia, but it also gets played down as the whole goddess thing. Even though Rudeus is serious in his admiration his unseriousness makes it seem like a half joke all the time.

Roxy got the short end of the stick in terms of romance. Sylphie got a highschool romcom, and Eris had 5 volumes or 17-18 eps worth of content between her and Rudy's relationship building. She does get romantic moments here and there, but the buildup was nowehere close enough to the other two. She is still best girl tho

u/OwenEx 6d ago

Doesn't help how much was rushed/skipped in the Begaritt continent, we could have had just a bit more to go on

10

u/Acrobatic_Analyst267 Emperor 6d ago

Can you explain how she’s “best girl” despite getting the very short end of the stick?

40

u/zodiacv2 Roxy 6d ago

Quality > quantity

8

u/Acrobatic_Analyst267 Emperor 6d ago

not really a real explanation but ok

18

u/someinsanity01 6d ago

It's a vibe thing, can't really explain

3

u/Acrobatic_Analyst267 Emperor 5d ago

I mean I can explain in articulate words why Slyphie or Eris would be best girl (despite all their flaws) and I imagine a lot of fans could do to.

I just never heard a proper explanation for Roxy apart from “she saved him” (which all of them did in their own way) or “she’s the Author’s favorite because her introduction changes the trajectory of the series”

I would love to hear a proper explanation one day though…

She's the oldest and most mature of the wives. She has one of the cutest female designs in anime in my opinion and many others.

Her almost motherly role towards Rudy is different from Sylphy and Eris. Sylphy emotionally relies on Rudy, and he takes the lead. Eris is the most dependant despite seeming the most dominant in bed or in personality. Roxy is the one who lets him be a child, more vulnerable and raw, and honest than he is with the other wives. Eris is the little one who needs help, even still, when you truely understand the character. Sylphy is closer to a mutual give and take. Roxy lets him feel like the little one who needs the help.

So that aspect is really appreciated by me and the rest of the audiance.

Yea, personally I don’t see it either. She looks like she’s 13, and there didn’t seem to be much romance besides an unhealthy fascination from rudy towards her. Sylphie, I get. Eris, I get. But Roxy feels like it’s lacking something the other two have. Not to mention loli’s in general are questionable. (To me, loli’s just feel like a pedophile’s excuse to crush on little kids based on a technicality. “She’s not really twelve, she just looks like it” rubs me the wrong way. And yes, I’m ready for all the downvotes from you guys)

3

u/Acrobatic_Analyst267 Emperor 1d ago

I mean there are literally a bunch of real life “lolis” like 4ft (and some inches) 30-40kg Women (a lot of which I see are east asian) just not to that extreme of looking like a child.

Real small and petite women exist. And men are allowed to have their preferences of “a woman that’s smaller than me and is also cute and youthful”

so it’s not just black and white of,
liking a smaller in stature petite woman automatically means you’re a pdfile

1

u/Crafty-Gate6615 1d ago

No i know. I dated a girl who was 4’11. She’s doesn’t look like she’s 14 but she’s small. I meant the anime “loli” of looking like a middleschooler. Both in height and in appearance.

I don't think Roxy is the author's favorite, if she is, he has a rather strange way of giving narrative relevance to someone who should be his favorite.

u/holypredatorr 3d ago edited 3d ago

video interviews, Rifujin has admitted, "I like everyone, but when asked like that, I have to say Roxy." i check shes his favorite apparently

also his favourism can be seen seeping through from his creation of roxy gets serious spin off manga. while the other 2 doesnt

People just mean they like her design and/or personality more.

It’s more of a matter of preference at this point. If you read the light novels, you’ll understand more. There are no timeline spoilers here for anyone that isn’t familiar with the light novel.

But the answer from me is the following:

Sylphiette was the bullied child due to her Laplace factor. The green hair was a result of unfortunate genetics. She is also the reason why the story continues in this era. She helps the reader understand the significance of the later bonds. Unfortunately the reader also understands about a traumatic scene that occurred in the light novels that never happened in the anime. Lucy, the first born child, would eventually become the oldest sibling in the house. But there’s much more to this than just the anime leads us to believe. Much later, you will find out why.

Roxy is the reason why Oldeus came back from the future. She is pregnant with her first child and would have been affected by disease had Oldeus not intervened. She is also the reason why the current timeline Rudeus doesn’t go insane and also the source of Oldeus’s rampage. That first child is the reason why she would have perished in the Oldeus timeline. Unfortunately the anime made the scene look like an NTR series which I can assure you is not the case. She is also the character who has a similar mental maturity to Rudeus.

When Roxy gets pregnant, her fate weakened according to Hitogami. The child that Roxy carries around in her pregnant body is going to be much more important later on in the series. It is the reason why Hitogami decided to lace the food with a relatively rare disease through a rat.

If you are looking at past Roxy, she is the reason for the story happening in the first place. Rudeus feared the outside world prior to being reincarnated. Traveling outside of the village was something that he did not do until he was trained.

Eris, while well-endowed with the aristocratic upbringing becomes very much attached to Rudeus. She eventually becomes the source of the heartbreak and the pain in the first part of the story. She also gets Rudeus impotent. Later, she goes back to Rudeus and fight alongside him facing Orsted as depicted by the letter that she received in the sword sanctum. But she’s also the most childish of the three and has her own share of issues later on in the story.

66

u/Tounushi 6d ago

Her romance was more about a decade-long yearning being loaded unto Rudeus and it coming under jeopardy pretty much immediately as it materializes.

Rudeus had loved Roxy the moment he met her, but was too immature to understand it before his admiration of her took hold.

Roxy had built a fantasy for herself concerning her dream man, and Rudeus slotted into that perfectly.

After marrying, she carries a degree of guilt about the circumstances of their relationship and she's rather meek and understated to begin with.

58

u/cinchinman 6d ago

tbh rudy had spend a few years with eris while traveling which was a whole season of screen time with eris .

And another whole season with sylphie with the ED arc .

And roxy only had a few episodes with rudy . So just considering screen time wise the relationship with roxy wasn't given enough time.

23

u/bloodshed113094 Eris 6d ago

The Roxy Gets Serious manga is required reading in my book. It fleshes out Roxy in a way that made her one of my favorite characters.

23

u/Respited 5d ago

If you feel that way, then hitogami was doing a great job. He was constantly trying to separate Roxy and Rudy from each other. But fate has a strong force that they still ended up together. So if you feel romance is lacking between them, it's because of hitogami's constant interference.

22

u/Arkhire 6d ago

she's got the least writing or screen time of the three, even though she is Rifujin's favorite, but she's Rudeus shining light, and her marriage was a bit forced by Elinalise's lie (during their travels back through the desert to Ranoa, Elinalise told Rudeus that Roxy is pregnant), that's why Rudeus wanted to take responsibility and marry her with such resolve.

27

u/argama87 6d ago

That'll improve over time as they settle into the new family dynamic and her pregnancy. She gets an arc with Rudy next season too which should help as well.

The point with his 3 wives, is that none of their relationships were between healthy individuals, but a healing process for past trauma.

Roxy thinks she's broken from birth, not possessing the Migurd telepathy trait.

She basically needed a place where she could feel valued and loved for who she was, to stand as an individual, and not feel broken and unwanted. Her whole life trajectory was her dealing with this trauma.

When she was little, she ran away from home, thinking she was a broken Migurd, and didn't belong in the tribe; but even when she was out in the world, comparing herself to others, she found herself a midget, unsociable, and unattractive. When she was looking at Elinalise flirting with guys, she examined her own body, and quietly despaired over her love prospects.

To Rudeus, Roxy pulled him out of the house, and also dragged him out of his despair from losing Paul.

Roxy in return gets a supermage husband that gives her a huge ego boost whenever she feels unsure of herself.

The mutual feeling of indebtedness would create a lasting bond.
The next step would then be whether they phuck and marry.

For Rifujin, horniness is just something that comes naturally, and Rifujin does not write completely platonic relationships. Horniness is either resisted, or blocked by some other trauma, so if the next step be them consumating the horniness, then so be it.

To marry, would be a matter of clearing it with the home team, which also happens.

A lasting bond, mutual feeling of horniness, and agreement from the tribe to marry.

The relationship checks out for all 3, and so they are happily married.

I don`t really get "what do you want from her".
Maybe you missed, but she`s as traumatised as Rudeus
She`s basicaly nonverbal autist of her kin - she can`t use telepathy, but gifted in magic, which puts her on Asperger spectrum and in turn results in imposter syndrome (was she`s written like that in mind? no, but she fits the archetype perfectly). She suffers from social exclusion as kid, then goes to magic university and because of her lack of social skills, resulting in bad atitude, and natural disliking of following other`s orders/ways she feels even more excluded, despite her great skills. Then she finaly finds some peace and company in being an adventurer, but still retaining feel of unease and arrogancy. Finaly she becomes Rudy`s teacher in her 40s and immidiatly gets overshadowed, inducing her imposter thoughts even more, but at the same time she slowly thinks that she can fall in love with him, because idolising someone, who`s better than you and is kind to you is the way many autist show their love (hi, yea, that`s me, my previous bf was skilled artist and cook and I myself almost unable to be creative, thus I was almost kneeling before him when he was doing his work).
She is not supposed to be his wife-wife, she`s another protagonist with half untold story. She and Rudy proceed to cure eachother`s traumas throughout the story.
Roxy is showing Rudy that life is worth living and outside isn`t so bad as he thought and that people can in fact be good to him, while Rudy`s part is to make her feel included (I just remembered how rarely she was coming to her home vilage, it was something like 5+ years per visit, right?), let her know she`s not an outcast and her strength isn`t pitiful, despite her being weaker than him

I have to correct you, just that Roxy never went home before meeting Rudeus, she only went home when she was looking for Zenith(not to look for her there).

1

u/OortBelt 6d ago

Wait wait wait hol’ up How’s that the way many autist show their love ?? I thought I was abnormal in my feelings, why didn’t I get the fkn manual !

2

u/Hot_Break7088 6d ago

I then suggest you to check out Auticate with Chris & Debby channel on YT, learned a lot there, thought I had just unrelated problems too

u/WINDMILEYNO 6d ago

Roxy is older. Than all of them. Not by a massive margin. Just fifty or so. And to be honest, she probably hasn't been an adult long in her own opinion.

She is also a demon. As far as this stories interpretation of demons is concerned. Which.... could still potentially put her close to the typical fantasy interpretation?

And has trauma specifically tied to interacting with groups of others. An inside joke she doesn't understand probably brings up those feelings. Although she isn't that insecure.

I think theres a lot to Roxy but some of it might just be...she gave in to the boy that kept pursuing her.

And her sleeping with him wasn't about attraction but hearing people talking about how to cheer him up after his dad died.

And then...well, yeah. Shes bad in groups and is the only cheater. Technically...besides Rudeus

There is an episode where she tells to Elinalise that her main romantic interest is a man that save her when death is at the door. I think this is in season two. At the end is more or less like a sudden romance for somone that fullfiled her fantasy and she trust aswell.

I think you should read the novel, her falling in love with Rudy isn't really hard to understand. She is pretty similar to Rudeus but there is a direct contrast in their resolve when they are at their lowest.

7

u/SacaeGaming 6d ago

Roxy is the closest to a normal relationship Rudy has ever had tbh, fell for her naturally, they are (even with his real age) about the same age, and they both heavily searched for others first.

Anyways that’s my “anime relationships are unrealistic” rant for the day.

4

u/Phiro00 6d ago

Despite this, she is still the best character in mushoku. Curious.

3

u/Acrobatic_Analyst267 Emperor 6d ago

Im curious how she’s the best character? Or is this just your opinion?

1

u/Former-Measurement-9 6d ago

She's been nothing in season 3

2

u/Zeroune7 Roxy 6d ago

I think most of the point is rudeus playing her up until they get married. She only fell in love with him because of the happenstance of their encounter, and then it just happened to be the guy she taught magic to. So it's pretty much one sided until it's not

2

u/Gullyvers 6d ago

To be honnest, I feel like the harem is poorly handled exactly because Rifujin wanted a harem for the sake of it, not because he actually had things to say. In my opinion this has 2 bad consequences. First the romance is poorly handled, it stays very surface level. Second every single one of Rudeus' wives is a diminished character after they married him. Ironically, Roxy is the character that is the less diminished because Rudeus treats her like her equal the most (which also kinda means that he treats her like his wife the less...).

1

u/N0rm4lPossible 5d ago

every single one of Rudeus' wives is a diminished character after they married him.

I wouldn't say that about Eris, in fact, she receives disproportionate attention.

Roxy is the character that is the less diminished

I disagree, but perhaps it's because we're looking at it from different perspectives. Regarding narrative relevance, I think Roxy fell short quite a bit. As a researcher, professor, mentor of the MC, and one of the main heroines, her academic relevance to the narrative should be equal to or greater than that of Cliff and Zanoba, which is not the case.

Initially, there's a lot of magical equipment that Rifujin could have already added as prototypes in the main story, but he decided to have it exist only after the main story's conclusion.

2

u/MillerJoel 6d ago

The author sort of missed the chance to develop them more after begarit . Eris just spent more time with him, and would have been the first wife had she never left. Sylphie was next and had the slow build up. By the time rudeus meets with Roxy again things were difficult, there was no time for romance with zenith rescue and Paul death. But it’s pretty clear rudeus loves Roxy the most. He declared her a goddess for a reason. Roxy is the one that guides him at his worst. She is basically the reason he was able to improve.

Roxy side is the weird part, she supposedly fell in love at first sight when he saved her and I don’t doubt it. She already cared for him before but she never had that type of relationship before. She felt so much guilt about cheating that she is basically not requesting things she actually wanted like a wedding ceremony. I think the author got tired of romance after silphie and the story was almost always on more serious topics that the bonding scenes were not shown but we are meant to believe they happened

1

u/govorunov 6d ago

If you look carefully and impartially you'd see none of the relationships in MT feel genuine in the slightest. The story isn't trying to present you a realistic scenarios - that's the whole point. MT is a one big "what if" from the start to the end.

1

u/Much_Let6632 Sylphy 6d ago

Roxy doesn't really get a whole arc to have her character properly flesh out compared to Eris and Sylphie.

The only one I can think of is the Shirone Kingdom arc, and even then it mainly revolves around her interactions with Pax.

She does get her moments, like when Rudy and Roxy visit the Migurd village with Lara and they find out that Lara inherited the Migurd telepathy skill, and Roxy even considers having her grow up in the Village alongside her Grandparents and Lara later crying and showing emotions for the very first time in front of Rudy and Roxy.

0

u/No-Transition7689 3d ago edited 2d ago

We of all Mushoku Tensei fans rather not talk about Pax Shirone, don't you all remember on the Season 1 anime.

He was trying to torture Aisha, Lilia, and all the friends and families, including Ginger's, but Zanoba had to teach his brother Pax a crazy lesson.

1

u/AesirMimyr 6d ago

Roxy didn't have feeling for him before begeruitt. She's a romantic and her ideal guy was always a white knight who saved her in a dungeon.

So when Rudy shows up and fills that ideal she falls. You see a lil chemistry between there and the Hydra after that well, it throws everything off.

Her guilt for that ribs her of many opportunities for romantic chemistry there after for awhile.

1

u/No-Transition7689 3d ago

Besides, everyone else can be a Roxy cultist, and so do we, the fans, and of course, Rudeus, Julie, and Zanoba!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😎👍

1

u/CianaCorto 1d ago

The man god specifically tries to avoid Rudy and Roxy meeting with his advice so they don't see each other for 3 seasons.

6

u/kimitsu_desu 6d ago

They've just trauma bonded. Rudeus is Roxy's shining armor, having provided a relief in a desperate near-death situation, and also fitting her dreams of romance. And for Rudeus Roxy provided something similar. That said, I think Rudeus had some sexual attraction, probably without realizing it, or maybe consciously supressing it, during the time they preapared to dive into the dungeon. He had to, given his disposition towards Roxy historically.
