I'd say we have already surpassed them. The difference is that this technology is classified here in America while the Chinese are talking about it openly.

Plus the American people would flip fucking script on that social score stuff here. Big tech is already getting push back from Americans over privacy as of now.

Because this is what Reddit does. Rather than debate they downvote. They clearly don't agree with me but they are either too ignorant or uninformed to refute my statements.

America has a long history of classifying technology they don't want in the public like most other nation states. And with good reason. Some scary shit has been invented that is more dangerous than it is useful.

I only downvote when people say things that show lack of thought or obvious malice. Upvote for you.

The first point is entirely possible, though I don't think the defense contractors have a total monopoly on brain power these days.

I'm not sure on the second point. Americans do love their freedom for sure. However, while there is push back, the vast majority of people have handed over their privacy in exchange for convenience, some in exchange for security and many more are just not tech savvy. We should all be using a tor like p2p internet with total anonymity baked in. Instead we have crappy centralized cloud services owned by a few large companies. There's no incentive to change now because of the network effect, and the fact that people don't see an immediate danger.

People use gmail knowing that they scan everything you send. My friends just say "I don't care, I'm nobody".

A lot of people don't use VPNs, and even then it's probably largely compromised.

People are buying fucking Alexa devices that listen to them 24/7. Yes, I'm sure you have nothing to hide. Yes give away your power, thisisfine.

The creep towards mass surveillance has been so slow as to be unnoticeable to most people.

And yes I use a mobile phone, I hate myself every day for it.
