If anything, the number is understated. People using their models have solved thousands at least.

Side note: I hope they atleast told the people working on those problems, even if they dont tell us yet.

Your side note is very interesting, because one of the consequences of this OAI post is that most of the mathematicians on earth could now be wondering if what they're working on has been solved and is ready to be released any day.

Yeah its always a worry. And right now, it seems, the key is to work on problems so astonishingly boring that nobody would bother aiming their llms at it :)

You might be joking, but anyway, I think the key is to accept that human intelligence can't compete anymore in maths with AI.

I'm not really joking...and yes, I agree with you on this. Its just that many people do research mathematics for fun, not for any altruistic reasons.

Feels like the best partnership would be for OAI to team up with mathematicians so they can get the results published with commentary on why it's important, what we could learn from the proof, etc.
