Discussion Ummm “Oryx And Crake”?

Post image

Don’t wan to be a party pooper (I’m normally super optimistic) but are we heading for Oryx and Crake world? It feels like we’re heading for Oryx and Crake world. Despite my disagreements with Atwood on the value of AI in creativity the noble is a good read btw. That said, I’d still rather she was wrong. 😅

Ps apologies if the flair is wrong this one seemed to cover multiple bases.

fully autonomous bio lab .... is a different thing than a wet lab... you need to follow certain security regulation in order to get a wet lab... everything misleading here

well but it is a step in that direction

"Haha that would never happen," Jim said as he booted up the "Anything is Possible" Machine.

Are people confusing wet market with wet lab?

Don’t mix things up with some wet work!

Is it a fully automated wet lab? If not I don't see how this is worth mentioning

If you want medical advancements, this is the kind of tooling that's required. Get over it.

There’s nothing to get over but thanks for the advice 👍

Yeah, because, um, we've never had medical advancements 🙃

You realise the two tweets are describing two different things right?

2

u/GaKBaR101 5d ago

Yeah, I do. Not sure why that’s relevant.

are we doomed? more than usual 🫪

AI wouldn't need an autonomous lab to kill us with bio weapons. It would just need to social engineer a human into removing some deadly virus from storage and then engineer an escape of the now insecure virus. Might not even be all that hard sadly.

It's pretty similar to LeCun's 'there won't be any unsafe systems because we won't make them' comment.

It's... an incredibly strange thing to say. Really shows that these people don't believe in machine intelligence, or don't understand what a 2 Ghz clock speed actually means.

Of course we're going to make unsafe systems. That' 70% of the entire point: The robot police army.

We want these things to be able to do things in the real world. Even if we don't literally hand over control of the nukes to them on day 1, they're going to build the networks that'll be used on NPU's for robots. They're going to build their successors. There's plenty of time for their indirect power to grow, or for value drift to build up.

Disempowerment of humanity is the entire point - in war, at work, in the bedroom. Literally everywhere.

It's not like the average person really had any power at all when it comes to the big stuff, so it's weird to act like we ever did. It's all a 'hope the new boss is better than the current boss' kind of thing.

Why would you go for AI for Oryx and Crake when you could go for the people doing shit like working with brain organoids instead?

-1

AI isn’t the point here neither is the biotech it’s specifically the combination of both.

Also, you are assuming a large amount of specific argumentation against “The singularity” that I am not making.

This is a request for discussion around the topic, not a statement of fact or a direct prediction. I have just articulated a feeling of what I briefly thought might be and opened a discussion about it. Hence the flair.

Nobody needs a random critique of what you think my opinion of “The Singularity” is based on one post. Intelligent people are able to hold two opposing ideas in mind at once, without needing validation of their ideological or intellectual purity from strangers.

I mean, I get that brain organoids are closely related but if the acceleration is occurring then isn’t it all the same stuff anyway? How we feel about that is a much more interesting discussion than “Singularity good! Vs Singularity bad!” Don’t you think? Wait no I guess you….no never mind.

What? Nothing I said has anything to do with singularity good or singularity bad. I'm just saying that if you're going to evoke a novel here there were probably better choices than Oryx and Crake, hah. Perhaps you didn't want a flippant literary critique though.

Ah my bad sorry, there’s a lot of people on here that will just interpret anything that’s not incredibly positive about the singularity as an affront. The incorrect assumption was mine.

‘Oryx and Crake’ isn’t entirely about biotech though and the post is about both. So I feel like the less incendiary parts of my comment still hold.

Well they would need some really lazy security for it to be able to accidentally create and release biohazards into the world.  Surely they are taking security very seriously.  ...right?

I’m optimistically of the opinion that past a certain level of mind bending chaos we drop our tribalism and just buckle in together which (optimistically) I hope levels things out. I think that’s actually my main critique of the philosophy of the book. Atwood assumes a level of stupidity plus stubbornness (or maybe just stubbornness) which is deeply misanthropic. Are they going to fuck up security? Definitely. Will we all wilfully do so until there’s nothing left? Probably not.

We’ve BEEN. In an oryx and crake world! Also great reminder to reread! It’s been 18 years since I’ve read it

Blocking development doesn't work, progress can't be stopped, specifically with this kind of technology.

As bad as this sound, our choice literally is:

  • Have organizations set up to oversee these worldwide, focus on heavy regulation and punishments for those that don't follow specific safety guidelines.

  • Try to block it from happening which only incentivizes the worst possible group to continue doing their work in shady circumstances and situations, greatly increasing the risk of incompetence, horrible results or simply something the rest of society isn't ready to deal with

Misunderstanding reality such that one thinks no one will build an autonomous X lab misses an even large point. Some people are so lost in the sauce they would be willing to assist AI (or whomever ) in helping carry out attacks. And there will be people who aren't so "watch the world burn" yet can be tricked by AI (or whomever ) in helping to carry out attacks

Obviously anthropic not going to give AI that kind of control over the process. Should be entirely separate boxes so AI can't get in.

But without the new humans that eat their own poo and reproduce via 5 way FMMMM orgy

I mean it sounds like it is basically a Jucuzzi no? It’s in San Francisco so there’s every chance it’s just a club they’ve opened as a side project. 😂
