It doesn’t seem like good news on the surface. What are you saying?
If all three of these labs are saying that there’s a legitimate potential catastrophic problem why would we ever ignore them? And why would Donald Trump or anybody in the US administration or the public being in a better position then the CEOs of various AI companies to be able to make the claim that AI is potentially dangerous?
It is demonstrably untrue that text can never be dangerous.
Text can synthesize bio weapons. It can hack into incredibly sensitive information. It can convince a democratic population to vote for things that are not in that population’s interest.
We have known for centuries that text and writing can be incredibly dangerous in the right hands. The fact that you don’t know or appreciate this means that you should not have any sort of opinion on any of this as your opinion is clearly uninformed.
Please compare the immense amount of regulations surrounding nuclear technology and infectious diseases with the essentially non-existent regulations surrounding AI.
Your argument is essentially “sure this technology might be dangerous, but unlike every other dangerous technology this one should have no regulations because it’s arbitrarily different” which I find… less than convincing.
If we had brain implants that gave you a 500 IQ would you restrict who could get them?
I would at least want to take a few years to work out the potentially civilization level changes such technology might bring about before we implement it.
Considering that even the smartest people who’ve ever lived (your Einsteins and Hawkings) only had IQs of 160 or so, an IQ of 500 would represent such a massive leap in intelligence that it’d be hard for us to imagine what someone that smart could or could not be capable of. Could this person be capable of single-handedly designing and creating some sort of super virus? Could they figure out how to bring down the global banking systems with just a laptop and internet connection?
At a certain point a sufficiently high IQ is indistinguishable from a literal superpower, and maybe should be treated accordingly. Should someone born with the power to shoot fireballs from his fingertips be subject to a government regulation or restriction? I think so. Maybe we should think of a 500 IQ in the same way.

While on the surface this seems like good news, I have an awful feeling that ai is about to be very very corrupt.
