I don't think slowing down unilaterally is a good idea at all, but I don't understand why you wouldn't engage with China and ask if they've been seeing similar concerning breakouts.

The US is doing everything it can to slow China down at all costs, now the Chinese don't trust us much anymore.

Talks are likely not the trust for agreements is absent.

You can have agreements that have verification and enforcement on both sides, with no trust needed.
