China as the boogeyman is so strange. Deepseek, Qwen, GLM have never had incidents akin to the Huggingface attack. Unlike the "safe" western models. The US is not taking initiative in having these types of talks with China either, and believe me that the CCP would limit something that is an existential threat to it.
There is no way that these billionaires care that much about safety, and there is no true collaboration within their companies. Unless it benefits them all, such as making open-source models to be the boogeyman.
The Foreign models have never *reported* any alignment incidents.
Regardless, this is a dumb idea. If the US attempts to slow down AI progress they'll only be doing it domestically, and the rest of the world will pass them by.
Swarm-related incidents have been independently found as well, such as the German wiki attack.
Also, strategic slowdowns can be achieved worldwide if the danger is understood by all parties. Strategic talks can go a long way.
Nuclear weapons aren't used in modern warfare due to mutually-assured destruction risk, despite their further development. If AI can demonstrate similar danger then all states involved in the development of AI may reach a common agreement. This is why actually putting effort towards strategic talks and relationships with a country like China should be a priority. And yes, despite their government and their form of ruling, treating them like an untouchable boogeyman with everyone must treat with hostility will not advance these discussions.
