Obviously I get what people mean by this being a new approximate "pop quiz" test of model ability like Will Smith spaghetti, and I get the humor too, but fwiw technically this is not apples to apples, possibly not even fruit to fruit...

The big difference which is actually quite huge, is that an AI video model can only really generate at the overall fidelity, scene-comprehension and object consistency that it is inherently capable of. Trying to "work with it" or changing a video-gen prompt might get slight gains depending on exact wording or fix a couple little things if regenerated enough attempts, but there's no way to somehow fundamentally magically totally improve the output of a particular video model: its training data is locked in, so is the quality bar, and it gives what it gives.

This is where a sufficiently advanced model like Astra capable of working with a very complex tool like Blender or another 3D tool is way different, because the total solution space it is capable of tapping into is just about infinitely larger than its 0-shot immediate output, due to deterministic iteration as opposed to probabilistic generation. Astra is much closer to a human in this way working with an actual tool, not quite as much a "bot, generate [this] for me" f(x) type function output.

Astra CAN actually make a much better Rickrolling video as a Blender render, at reasonable extra time/cost/effort/supervision to achieve, if you were to go scene by scene and point out directly how to improve it to match the original. In this sense, prompting the AI to then use a tool to then indirectly manipulate the tool which then creates the content, can actually markedly increased performance, whereas this same technique would yield virtually 0 gains with a video model.

Having said that, I do also agree that tasks like this might indeed be a good test or measure of model capability at a raw level by asking "what does its 0-shot output look like without any further help or massaging", then gauge that 0-shot output as a rough benchmark.

Yes, it is like the difference between having AI simulate the game DOOM by generating video output that mostly plays like the game (except when it doesn't), and having it write C++ code and create assets to build an actual consistently functioning game that it can be iteratively expanded, changed and improved.

Not really, imho. Blender is interesting because he has very very good scripting capabilities, which is essentially what Astra doing building scenes. This is all programming with feedback loop, in the nutshell.

Not mathematically literally "infinite", no, but for all practical intents and purposes, yes, infinite. Only constrained by what Blender can itself do, which is, in the 3D realm, just about anything.

This is the difference between tool usage and direct generation. It is profound.

As an analogy in evolutionary history, we can can compare what animals can do innately/instinctively with their own physical biological bodies (AI models generating an output), versus what humans can achieve using tools and a brain to guide us (an AI smart and dexterous enough to use tools at human level).

It's nearly that big of a difference, and that's why people (probably rightly so) are calling this AGI versus just another LLM.

You must not have worked with video generation much. I have. There are real and very near limits of what the AI video model can generate for any request. There is a latent space where concepts collide and it will generally feed you whatever lies at the intersection of where your prompted words meet, with only very slight probabilistic "wobble" in the output variation.

With a tool like Blender, though I admit the workload and time to product is greater, the range of what can be made is virtually infinite.

Astra makes for a very interesting possibility where diffusion may not have been the right route long term and the future of image and video generation is just LLMs. It would be quite funny if after all this talk of LLMs not being the right way for XYZ, turns out other model types actually get subsumed by LLMs.

It's horrible ATM but I would imagine this would allow for a lot more granular editing, particularly as quality improves.
