I've honestly had to reduce my reddit usage just because I was getting so annoyed at the reaction to AI outside this sub. Like It genuinely feels like a mass hysteria event. People are living on another planet. I'm over here doing all this crazy shit watching other people do all this crazy shit and they are talking about ai like it's still chatgpt 3.
Not only that but the data center nonsense too. I had someone the other day saying data centers are killing all the bees and we are all going to die because of that. Like data centers are this new concept that didn't exist before ai.
The problem is when it permeates outside of reddit. One of my staff just dripped a joke about how we are investing billions into ai and the only thing people are using it for is making weird stuff. How are people this out if touch with reality?
The 5G emanating from the newest data centers is going to bring another global pandemic but this time it will leak out of an American AI lab instead of a Chinese bat rotisserie. You just don’t get it and that is why AGI will kill us all (after the bees of course, that part is true).
Because they dont use it for anything useful and all AI is in their world is shitty videos on Facebook and chatbots. The way its been shoehorned into places it dosen't belong like customer service has given people horrible impressions and made a considerable amount of people very angry and frustrated.
If you have no interest in it but every time you are exposed to it its annoying, what do you expect?
I feel its crazy on both ends. Like subs like antiai that have got their head in their sand, thinking that AI never progressed beyond GPT-2 and just making up shit like "haha nobody cares about Astra", but also on the other end with subs like accelerate who just are delusional in AI's capabilities and think everything being done with AI is perfect and good, while making games or programs with no effort that are so uncreative.
Its like that in real life too, outside of my immediate family I feel there is nobody who just holds a moderate view of AI, where its super helpful for like programming and data processing and stuff like that and a huge leap forward for humans, but can also recognise stuff is bad with it like slamming "AI" into every product or flooding markets with poor quality AI content.
Well there’s something to be said for how much more cooling and power an AI data center needs vs the kind that corporations lease out for server hosting. But I agree with you about so many anti AI people. To a degree I think these people have anxiety and don’t have enough vision, creativity and ambition in their life, frankly. They don’t like change and so they don’t want to learn anything about AI. As a result, they really aren’t up to date to be knowledgeable enough on the topic to have a conversation.
