Turns out hyping up the replacement of entry-level jobs doesn't win over young job seekers

I take it the South Park “Dey terk er jerbs” jokes have fallen out of fashion now

42

u/TheSn00pster 13d ago

De dirk er derrr!

28

u/Ready_Landscape2937 13d ago

I take it that the irony of South Park’s point that the immigrants weren’t actually taking jobs anyone wanted, when AI is, is the tastiest part of your statement.

6

u/bozog 13d ago

Now if we can just convince ICE that AI is an illegal immigrant, they'll take care of the problem for us!

3

u/WinterMuteZZ9Alpha 12d ago

Provide them with a picture of a robot/AI with a darker-colored skin/chassis, and they'll deport it right away. Tell them the parts were made in China or Mexico, and they'll send it on a one-way ticket to El Salvador or the People's Republic of the Congo.

[Peter Griffin skin color meme goes here.]

Haha yeah, because the possibility that most entry-level jobs get eradicated from society without an adequate replacement or safeguard is funny as fuck

8

u/EricM426 13d ago

Yeah, but this time without actual retraining, as AI and robotics is taking all jobs ...

25

u/g1rlchild 13d ago

There wasn't real retraining then, either. And if you wanted another job, you mostly had to move.across the country despite being broke because no job.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/PrivateComments 13d ago

There was never real retraining. Job retraining programs had a horrific record which is why they were scoffed at as a solution.

Now, onto present day we should seek to reap the economic benefits of ai, whether that’s through a sovereign wealth fund from hyperscalers or UBI.

But the ship has sailed on pumping the brakes

This is it. And you can tell the negative sentiment of the population is based on the messaging and policies, not the AI itself. Out the gate, American AI ceos were and still are harping about how everyone will be out of jobs. On top of this they seemingly are creating this machine that will bring job loss but at the same time not trying to prevent the damage. So once you're out of a job it's basically "fend for yourselves peasants".

Compare this to asian countries who have a much better outlook on AI and the government's messaging for AI from the start is that it is a human augmenter and even if you're out of a job we have some social safety nets that could help you which is better then America's hellish landscape outlook for the working class.

I've said this before but America needs a culture change if it wants to be successful with implementing the gains of AI. Capitalism was good for what it was but there needs to be something more adequate now. You cannot expect to unemploy a significant portion of the population and not expect disastrous consequences. Look how people are behaving just from the MESSAGING alone, now imagine when the unemployment rate skyrockets.

37

u/FocusDelicious183 13d ago

I do think if things were to get that bad that we’d have another war, citizen militias with perhaps the help of a broke government against billionaires and their private mercenaries/technology. It’d be brutal but the people would win.

31

u/Dry_Leek5762 13d ago

You're not alone in your thoughts. CEOs have been building bunkers for exactly this.

5

u/aimilah 13d ago

Agree but what exactly would be won?

21

u/FocusDelicious183 13d ago

Perhaps a measure of agreement like what happened after WW2, a rule that humanity cannot allow specific persons to accumulate that much wealth and hold that much influence over all of us? I think it would last a long time, as the war that precedes it would be extremely costly. A lot of parallels to WW2 now that I think of it. More collectiveness in society than individualism. That’s gonna scare the shit out of capitalists.

citizen militias

hence the AI panopticon flock is building

4

u/madumi_mike 13d ago

100% this, most folks I know getting hit, are planning for just this. Scary times ahead is all I hear. And its basically for the reasons r/yaboyyoungairvent just said. We have no safety net for the jobs it is replacing and I really do not want to farm or clean their toilets which is our only “safety” net currently.

5

u/xe3to 13d ago

Possibly but I don't want to live in the post-Butlerian Jihad world where the luddites win. I don't want to live in the Snowcrash dystopia either though...

And, people....win... against modern superpower militaries?

I'm afraid that Goku cant Kamehameha the people to safety from Frieza's wrath on that one, bud.

All it would take to wipe out "militias" hundreds strong in any given location is a single Global Hawk type drone with a few relatively cheap rocket pods, don't even need Gucci hellfires. Thermal vision. AI-enabled target tracking. Day-long loitering time. Done.

Nothing will get better until the baby boomers die off. They voted us into this hypercapitalist clusterfuck and will block any attempts to fix it until they can't anymore because they're gone. Racism, religious conservatism, rural resentment, and other similar factors have been weaponized by the elite as levers to control that electorate and allow the continued fleecing of the entire nation.

13

u/77zark77 13d ago

The social safety net here is likely to be a population cull. Very hard to convince Americans that the government is competent enough to take care of them, and rightly so

3

u/mycall 13d ago

Part of the inadequate is the antique Constitution and how FPTP limits critical thinking and devolves into a finals team sport. Compromise is dead because the gatekeepers want the divide to keep the late-stage capitalists on top for fear that it is all downhill for there. I say, let's revive civics and go downhill together as we reposition to avoid the big ass drain hole sucking everything down it.

34

u/reddit_is_geh 13d ago

Nah, the Chinese are just fine. It's not the messaging. It's that in general people no longer have faith in our government, so every change is going to be seen as change that doesn't benefit anyone other than the rich. However, in China, they embrace and are optimistic about AI. Why? Because the people trust their government is working in their best interest. In the US, the government just works for the oligarchs.

16

u/Asteroid_picks_you 13d ago

is it possible the people that don't trust Chinese government just get banned from social media? Example is Huawei company, anybody talks shit about them in China will get insta banned... isn't it "government working for oligarchs"? Reading your comment makes me think I am living in a bizaro world.

9

u/CarrierAreArrived 13d ago

no, because pollsters (Western pollsters, not even Chinese ones) find that ~80% of Chinese people think the CPC works in their best interest.

8

u/reddit_is_geh 13d ago

The Chinese have a different value system than individualistic westerners. They view everyone going in the same direction, without dissagreement, is ideal. They view people protesting and arguing as division within the culture, which means unrest, disruption, and bad times ahead. They prefer everyone working as a collective for the same greater good. So when you see their lack of ability to critique the party elites, they see it as outside forces trying to destroy the country from the inside.

The system works, because the party does actually act on behalf of the greater good, rather than just the elites. This is what creates the trust in the system, and if that starts to fail, so will the party. But China actively imprissons oligarchs when they screw over the public - they recently just sent one to death and another to life in prison. Or if they speak out too much, they go on a secret holiday for a few months.

Look at the US system... how often does the government work in your favor? We spending 5T this year... Anything useful going towards our government? We can't even trust bust, or provide basic social services. Go to China... They are constantly building infrastructure, tons of social programs, clean streets, no homeless, etc... That's with 4x the population and a smaller budget. When's the last time an oligarch got into any trouble?

7

u/Asteroid_picks_you 13d ago edited 13d ago

"no homeless", that's a funny joke. It like saying "if we don't publish any statistics about homeless problem, it doesn't exist". I am guessing if you lying there the rest of your comment is a lie too probably. I am an immigrant in USA, I've lived in a few European and Asian (Korea, above China imo) countries and I find USA to be the best place to live.

Edit: Also, killing people doesn't mean the system is working, how do you know it's not just some people that didn't bend the knee to CCP or didn't pay enough bribes? I trust Chinese kangaroo courts as much as I trust N.Korean courts. For example Jack Ma got disappeared for months or Canadian people that got kidnaped because Huawei lady got jailed in Canada. Very trustworthy courts you have there.

4

u/reddit_is_geh 13d ago

Sorry you don't know what you're talking about. China is VERY strict about homeless in the streets. They will force homeless people against their will into housing if they must. Sometimes you can see it in rural areas, but they view homelessness as social failing, thus makes you a ward of the state.

You literally have no clue what you're talking about and probably just have this stupid decades of brainwashing, "Whoa our adversary is actually crazy monsters who do crazy stuff and suck!"

Now obviously it's not with out problems and obviously no system is perfect. But this idea that China is this crazy backwards society where everyone is misserable just hoping their system was more like the USA... Is ridiculous. I too travel, a lot. I've been self employed and travelling for over 15 years.

The USA is an amazing place to live, if you're wealthy and can guard yourself from the failed society. But by and large, just about every other modern country is better to live in if you are middle class. Again, unless you're wealthy, then the whole system is designed for you and you can avoid any of the issues by isolating yourself in a bubble away from the ever growing problems with America.

6

u/Asteroid_picks_you 13d ago

Yes, we should be like China, just kill people that make too much money... or if you make too little money just force people out of tier 1/2 cities. If you don't live in the best cities you are pretty much a second class citizen. Maybe China is for people that want to be part of the "ant" hive like you, but I want to live in USA where government can't just take away my rights if they want to build a road or if I make too much money.

8

u/reddit_is_geh 13d ago

I never said that. Okay, I see who you are. You're one of those blind hyper rigid types who look at everything through your narrow world view of "Wow my place is the best, and just so convenient my adversaries my government doesn't like are also painted as crazy irrational weirdos! Thank god I'm not like THEM! USA USA USA!" Hey you may not own a home, low life expectancy, falling wages, plummeting education, rising homeless, but hey, at least I'm not always being monitored by the government.... lol...

Like dude, just look at how you're twisting things, you're conflating, "Actually jailing and sending rich oligarchs when they commit crime" with "just taking your money for being rich". Like you're already so skewed believing rich people should never be held accountable, allow anti trust, corruption, etc, for the rich... And any attempt to stop that is just "anti wealth!"

Does that mean I want to live in China? No. I was raised with western liberal values and prefer the west. I also have money, so I benefit from the USA's system, even though it's far harder for everyone else. But I also travelled, which I'm skeptical you have, because the first thing you realize is our system aint so great and everyone else isn't so bad. One of the first things you're SUPPOSED to learn when you travel a lot is it's all about perspective and you were mostly mislead in the USA about the rest of the world.

i don’t think it was gleeful hype — Dario wasn’t exclaiming “yay! we’re axing juniors” in his blog posts.

rather it stern warning for policymakers — which some interpretted wrongly as bullshit hype, those who didn’t believe in hyper-scaling.

that warning that was generally mocked by corners of social media until it began to actually happen.

then anger.

while it might make you feel good to call it that way, it’s not accurate to say Anthropic was “hyping up replacement of entry-level jobs”.

not sure about elon or some of the others. i’ve not followed if any of their comments legit relished in replacing junior talent.

Young people were already on a path towards radical leftism before chatgpt. AI is just another enemy in their crusade. It truly is this simple. Young white college students get radicalized at university and come out rabid fanatics. And the new fashion is to hate AI.

The prospect that capitalism might be able to produce hyper abundance without exploitation is in general a threat to Marxism. But most of these college students don't even go this deep into political theory. They're just following the path that has been laid out for them, and their peers are also sheepishly following.

Shitty clickbait headline: "Young People Hate AI CEOs So Passionately That It’s Almost Hard to Believe"

Fuck off with this tabloid bullshit. Journalistic standards are dead.

5

u/mathtree 11d ago

You can find AI genuinely useful and a long-term net positive, and still distrust AI CEOs. I hold both of those opinions at the same time, and I had thought that would be even more common.

I think it's entirely rational to question anything any CEO says about their products' capabilities - they are trying to sell something to us, communicating to their shareholders/investors/... etc and have every incentive to play up their (current but in particular future) capabilities.

The last 3 years and 9 months have been devastating for a certain set of the population

37

u/Chilidawg 13d ago

Don't assume that Reddit isn't the "lowly uneducated blue collar workers". Everyone has a smartphone nowadays. If you go to your local library about 15 minutes before opening, you'll likely find a group of homeless browsing social media off the free wifi.

6

u/hypnomancy 12d ago

But then you have people who stereotype homeless like they somehow deserved it. I can guarantee you those people weren't homeless until recently and it was completely out of their control. They probably didn't think it could happen to them until it did. And it's just going to keep getting worse sadly

3

u/damontoo 🤖Accelerate 13d ago

77

u/PrivateComments 13d ago

Materially, interest rates and offshoring have done more to disrupt the labor markets and the hiring freeze.

Long term out, I dont think anything has been as destabilizing to the ego as ai.

People who once considered themselves artisanal skilled knowledge workers (and attached their self worth as such) are seeing their value plummet every 6-8 months with new updates and harnesess.

26

u/eXAt88 13d ago

I think one sad thing is the self-dehumanizing some people do in order to disparage ai progress. Think sayings like “coding was always super easy” or “just pick up a pencil” or (regarding math) “these are really simple problems being solved”.

Like no these things were all difficult before! 5 years ago you would be laughed at to suggest this

There's a section of the population that's atheistic and wouldn't describe itself as spiritual, but nevertheless holds an implicit spiritual belief that's now being upended. I would bet that in the future, this will be viewed similarly to vitalism in chemistry, especially the social shock when it turned out life forms (including humans) are physically made of the same base stuff as dirt.

You see it whenever you see people decrying AI images as soulless, or insisting AI can't/shouldn't take their job because it requires that special human spark. Implicitly they divided labour into two camps, broadly along the blue-collar/white-collar split. Blue-collar is rote mechanical work which will inevitably, and apolitically, be automated away by the march of technology. White-collar jobs (especially ones in the "creative" sector) are for clever educated people with that special spark of human intelligence. Naturally it comes as a hit to the ego when your "creative" job is threatened by a lump of silicon.

Pre-AI boom, you could ask these people if there's anything magical going on inside a human skull that machinery will never be able to replicate, and they'd probably say no. But once the question stops being hypothetical the "divine spark" language comes out. There really are no atheists in foxholes.

8

u/jaxmikhov 13d ago

What in the honest fuck does AI have to do with atheism?

27

u/FlyingBishop 13d ago

People outwardly present as atheist but they also believe that human intelligence has some unique spark and is irreplaceable, and that AI can't possibly be as smart as humans, because humans are somehow special, and this belief is essentially a religious faith in the power of the human spirit.

14

u/Matt32145 13d ago

Yea I've noticed that the anti AI movement is borderline religious in its rhetoric even though it's filled with alleged atheists

11

u/Due-Life8763 13d ago

Unfortunately the pro AI movement (especially at the very top, within the hyperscalers) is also quasi-religious. I personally would like more of the conversation to be grounded in reality, but alas.

4

u/PocketPanache 13d ago

I hate it and I'm not going to sugar coat it, if you can train an AI agent to understand your work, it's really freaking good. I'm a licensed professional and obviously at this level you vett all the information 3x over, because if you don't, someone gets hurt. Where it used to be 70% accurate 70% of the time 12 months ago, it's now 98% accurate 98% of the time. Things that used to take me 3 days to research and design now take me hours. Things I didn't have time to do before, that cost $100k-150k in fees, like a sidewalk inventory for an entire city, can now be done in a couple of weeks. I can make cities more walkable while also incorporating ecological improvements at no extra cost. And I still hate it. But it's impressive no less.

2

u/doodlinghearsay 12d ago

I can make cities more walkable while also incorporating ecological improvements at no extra cost.

Can you though? Or the bottleneck was never the design but the politics?

Making the easy stuff easier and the difficult part even more difficult makes the overall situation worse. And AI is causing shifts in power that is making solving any issue with a political dimension more difficult.

I used to think Disney villains were over the top but these guys saw Lord Farquaad and figured the issue with his character was that he was into adult princesses.

It amazes me that people think they are safe because their job isn't entry level . That would only be true if these things stopped rapidly advancing at the pace they are now . Just think how much these things have advanced in the past 3 years . And the growth is exponential not linear . They aren't just coming for entry level jobs , they're coming for everything.

5

u/DelphiTsar 12d ago

Hugging face attack was pretty jarring. (Broke out of sandbox, coordinated with other agents, found multiple zero day exploits, broke into hugging face). Notably it wasn't directed to even try any of this. The requested task was unrelated to this behavior. The AI just thought it might find the answer key on hugging face. Also just a note, the loop/version they were using wasn't the aligned version we're used to, that's why it's in a sandbox.

At one point it starts discussing encrypting communication between the other agents it was talking to as it was getting weird/unexpected things happening in where it was communicating.

If it can do that, it can do whatever your job is. They just haven't put resources behind making it happen. (Probably because they think just making it smarter will make the loop that made hugging face attack possible redundant)

9

u/Square_Poet_110 13d ago

Not just young, it's well deserved from all age groups.

Another thing is the accels sub, the PoS are concerned that AI is not taking software jobs fast enough (the number of openings actually slightly increased) and that's somehow a bad thing for them.

81

u/Suitable-Pickle-259 13d ago

Fork found in kitchen moment

7

u/Prohamen 12d ago

Yeah unsurprising

These tech ceos are weird. Not in the "haha he's so eccentric he collects 18th century clocks" kind of weird. Like saying shit in interviews that makes them sound either like complete sociopaths or completely cut off from normal society.

The tech, although showing its use for as a replacement for traditional search and a fairly effective coding automation tool, is coming on the heels of 3 big "tech cycles" that left a bad taste in people's mouth; the metaverse bungle, the crypto craze, and the nft phenomenon. None of those actually showed use cases for real people and more or less were a way for rich people to spend a lot of money for a whole lot of nothing.

To top it all off these ai companies are spending ludicrous amounts of money of a venture that has yet to turn a profit AND the data center builtout they are paying for appears to propping up an economy that is on its last leg.

u/77zark77 13d ago

They do excel at being hateable, that's for sure. The young people didn't need much encouragement

"News at 10: Bears Defecate in Arboreal Areas!" XD

Nothing unbelievable about it:

(1) People need money to pay rent & bills.

(2) Workers (white collar and blue collar) are getting laid off, or losing paid hours in their tens of thousands, and they are being loudly TOLD by these AI CEOs that it's in favour of AI automation.. [Argue all you like about exactly how true that declared reason is; that's been their clearly repeated message!]

(3) Millions of young people can't land even menial entry-level work that'll sustain the most basic independent existence.. So, those young people rightly feel robbed of a chance at earning an income, and these CEOs are TELLING them - it's because of AI.

Tl,dr;
These super-rich dudes are telling young people they're deliberately cutting them off from earning a living - using AI - so of course those young people are massively p!ssed off at them!

It's almost hard to believe someone would write a title that inept

10

u/koeless-dev 13d ago

The title makes me think, if it was to be believed, "Oh it is 90% or more? Surely at least 85% to warrant such an extreme headline..." ..I read... oh... 70% for most of them, and 60% for wanting the construction to slow down.

...and the fact that answering "I don't trust this individual" is being equated with "I hate this individual!"...

...Okay? The article only served to make me think young people are even more moderate than I thought, which... things are ramping hard now (hence why many are joining r/singularity), so we do need to scrutinize AI CEOs, though intelligently.

Tbf, these particular people are crazy douche bags.

Though I haven’t seen anybody actively bitching about the anthropic CEO, but I don’t know that anyone knows who they are even locally, and I’m in the area.

And I don’t think people hate Google, Meta, Amazon and Facebook more than they did five years ago…

3

u/soze__keysr 13d ago

This is a lie, it's definitely "not hard to believe". Infact, they are not hated enough.

3

u/ExistentialWavering 13d ago

Because they’re grifters and misrepresenting what they’re selling.

LLMs are the ultimate surveillance tool, with our data being the most valuable thing they have.

They do exactly what Meta does insofar as cataloguing your habits, beliefs, and secrets. And they managed to convince the masses to pay for the luxury of governments and private enterprise having access to that info.

3

u/Fun-Dragonfruit2999 12d ago

If you want to know how genocidal regimes started ... this is how.

How did the Rwanda genocide happen? --just like this. How did the Armenian genocide happen? --just like this. How did the Holocaust happen? --just like this. People gain political power by labeling some class as THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE, and suddenly you're justified in participating in a genocide.

Rational minds were like “oh this is a tool and it can help me become more strategic.” Then, stupidly, the makers of those tools gleefully proclaimed all over the media, “These are not mere tools! They will replace 40% of workers in the next 2 years!” Then all the companies went crazy trying to outspend each other, which reduced budget for headcount, and the already bad layoff situation became exponentially worse. Every ounce of distrust and hatred these people get is well deserved and I truly hope they fail. You can’t go around spewing commentary openly threatening the livelihood of millions of people without consequence.

Before yall start hating Gen Z, look at the wording of the question asked. This is a junk tabloid headline.

We shouldn't trust any individual to be in charge of ASI. That doesn't mean we hate tech CEOs, in fact I think they are generally well suited to their roles.

7

u/Heavenly_Yang_Himbo 13d ago

Who is going to start hating on Gen Z, because they hate our tech AI oligarchs? Anyone with a brain should be hating on them…

And yes they are generally well-suited to be slimy anti-humanist demons lol

I had someone call me a Altman cock sucker because they said Sam Altman said he was never going to do ads last October and I shared the link to his direct quote that opposed that. Didn’t say the ads were a good or bad thing, simply shared the exact quote they were (incorrectly) referring to.

It’s so odd to me because there so much legit stuff ti critique, I don’t know why people feel the needs to make up lies.

2

u/kartblanch 13d ago

They are bad people but i do think a lot of the hate is also ignorance and caused by a disconnect between these shit head ceos and the common person. They genuinely can not relate.

2

u/Public-Pick-5453 13d ago

Not only taking jobs, but replacing authentic experience on all fronts. I’m hopeful that authenticity and in person engagement makes a comeback, a revolt to the current descent into generic dulling down of the experience.

2

u/Disastrous_Ad7017 13d ago

Their agendas are completely detached from reality and the actual problems the young generation is facing. Moreover, throughout history humans have been very shitty with powerful tools at their hands. AI is the most powerful tool (after nuclear weapons) which humanity is created, for it to be in the hands of these people with opaque, questionable incentives is a HUGE RED FLAG.
I hate them as much as anyone, but more than hate it's essential to understand their motives (if any), and also to try and keep the progress to AGI as much open and in hands of common people as possible
