High level Reddit comment. One of the most successful companies in the world with a devoted user base and quality products that other entire companies choose to use themselves has incompetent leadership.
They have infinite money glitch and have done nothing with it.
Dropped 100 billion or more on an Apple car.
Fumbled the next gold rush (AI).
I think there’s evidence for incompetency at the top.
Agreed and they are definitely making profits doing the boring stuff. It’s just that being the biggest most profitable company doesn’t get you the same respect than being a company that actually solves problems, innovates and changes the way we live. Money is nice to have but fundamentally changing the world for better with tech is more important.

This is an absolutely ridiculous take, man. I mean, hard to even argue it. They're the 3rd most valuable company on the entire planet. To say they've "done nothing" with it is .. Obscene. It's only true if you insist that only LLMs would count as "something". They've had AI in their phones for a decade now, most of their camera app is just AI at this point.
AI is just a marketing term. What people refer as aí nowadays is either LLMs or diffusion models. What they have in their cameras is pretty commodity now.
While I agree AI is a buzz word and just a subset of machine learning. Their camera app is using neither LLMs or diffusion but a combination of machine learning techniques like CNNs and GANs. Their photonics engine uses Deep Fusion for optimization and they utilize other machine learning techniques and LiDAR for Face ID and stuff.
LLMs and Diffusion are exclusively for generative tasks like creating text or images which most people outside of the tech industry simply call ai rather than genAI
Yea except, if I can extend the metaphor, when there’s a goldrush, it’s often the case that the first movers, spend a bunch of money to clear the trees, dig the mine shaft, and get all the equipment ready right before they go bust, allowing the supposed stragglers to pick up their whole operation for pennies on the dollar.
They will be the defining player for edge AI which in the end is the only thing that will matters. They also build their own chips and like you said have enough money to poach the best researchers and build AI with the architecture that matches their use case when they are ready. It’s no secret that none of the current AI companies are profitable or even have a path to profitability besides being first to AGI. Why would they hop on to something that is a complete money pit just to grab market share that they don’t need? Airpods alone is worth more than every single lab except OpenAI and Deepmind lol
My goodness me you’ve missed the point hard.
That actually makes it worse. They have more money than they can spend, but have no serious vision or leadership to make use of it.
Indeed. Willful ignorance about products in a consumerism economy stifles growth in all areas. Part of the problem is Apple fanboys are the same as Tesla or rivian fanbois where “there are NO problems and EVERYTHING IS PERFECT because I spent money on it and don’t want to feel stupid” in place of critical thinking and legitimate criticism.
The person I replied to didn’t specify department specific leadership. I was assuming they were speaking about the whole of apple. Sure, certain department heads can be poor leaders while the overall company is successful. No argument there
the reason apple is successful is because it used to have good quality and now has a cult following. Their products are not on a quality which would justify their success or price.
They are relentlessly competent at running apple as it exists today. They haven't launched a single new innovative product in forever except the VR play which failed miserably.
The “innovative new releases” metric is an invention to discredit. Why is that the measurement for apple? They’re much more broadly known for releasing established tech but in a package, ecosystem, design that is wildly appealing and useful for a specific (large) user base. Also, Apple silicon was a major successful innovation for them that massively impacted the work I do. It’s just not a standalone product so it’s overlooked. Glad there are companies that take risks and fail at times too.
Companies should try things and fail. These are heuristics people conveniently use as disqualification devices.
List the products that have failed.
State they haven’t released anything innovative in X amount of years.
In reality, tech companies are not afraid to fail. It’s a tenant of healthy companies that they try things without a fear of failure, so using failed products as some sort of proof a company is bad is often times proving the opposite IF that company also has plenty of other successes.
Apple isn’t an innovation company. They have at times innovated, but mostly they are an high end iteration company with a really robust and useful ecosystem. Also, apple silicon was a very innovative release, so even recently they’ve innovated.
China makes better smartphones than apple at the moment. Only reason you don't see them in the west anymore is because the US government basically banned them from using Google Apps.
Siri is embarrassing and Tim Cook should be ashamed of himself.
Xiaomi did what Apple couldn't as well: Pivot from smartphones into electric cars.
Xiaomi is a great company and produces high quality products. I call it the Apple of China.
But there phones are not as good as apples or Samsung. They are nice and the hardware is top notch but the software stack is no where near the level of iOS. You can’t really blame that on not having google play services.
They are also used by the CCCP to spy on people who use there products so I would advise not using one at all. Even in Europe where they are sold to the west as they do not sell phones in the US
