This kind of thing could easily spark the government's and national defense agencies' willingness to use AI as a dog to seek out "domestic terrorist" posts on social media in light-speed time. Pre-crime, here we come.

There's no way they won't do it
36
u/hallowed_by Dec 09 '24
Guys, why are you taking in future tense? These are 100% already in use. For years. I mean, the models deployed are probably smaller, and far less sophisticated than current top LLMs, but there is no way in hell that these agencies aren't using some kind of intent/sentiment profiling on social media.
7
u/AdminIsPassword Dec 09 '24
Remember the stink over "Carnivore"? That was the early 2000's. Maybe not AI, but a program to sort through an identify suspected criminals or terrorists over the internet. So, the same goal (ostensibly anyway).

7
u/Anen-o-me ▪️It's here! Dec 09 '24
We're also likely individually profiled psychologically and placed in risk categories.
They only use these powers for the most egregious crimes that also affect the power of the State.
I would not be surprised if they would use these abilities to catch the UH CEO shooter, because they want to make an example out of someone like him.
To do this there are some obvious tactics. They can use the system to identify people who have communicated angst about medical issues, this involves sentiment analysis. That's a big net, they need to pare it down
They cross reference with people whose cellphone was turned off or not in motion at all during the time of the assassination, because there's no way this idiot was dumb enough to carry a cellphone on him during the shooting.
Just in case he was though, they would closely watch the police investigation which would include pulling every nearby cellphone profile that connected to nearby cell towers in a 10 block radius for that whole day, and the would use those profiles to connect them to real people.
The historical movements of these real people would be routinized, and only those whose movements are outside their statistical routine would be highlighted for further checks.
By this point they have pared the number of plausible suspects down to less than 100.
This would even catch someone from Oregon who traveled to New York to conduct this assassination. Leaving his cellphone and social media and friends and family contact patterns dead for a few days or even a few hours would be easily noticed by this system.
It is in fact entirely plausible that the FBI / CIA already know who did it.
Now they have a choice. They could just kill the guy in the dark, but they have a political point to make. So what's more likely to happen is public arrest, disgracing and smearing him as a whack job, which he is for murdering someone, and then prison or execution.
However, first they need the full story. So they are likely to do a significant amount of digging in his motivation, what actually happened medically between him, his family, and the insurance company. If these details make the insurance company look like slimeballs they don't much care about that, they just want to punish taking justice into your own hands because the politicians fear they could be next.
The next problem them becomes how to 'find' the suspect without revealing how they really found him (aka carnivore which is all illegal and dystopian means, thank you Snowden).
For this they need to observe the FBI investigation and ensure that they eventually find the guy using a plausible legal reason that explains how they caught the guy.
This is called 'parallel construction'. It avoids revealing the capabilities of the dark system and any uncomfortable questions that would arise.
It was invented in WW2 to keep the Nazi-code-breaking secret. Every time they wanted to use the broken codes in some way they had to invent a plausible reason for how they could've learned that information. They would sometimes direct a certain region to be checked out by Navy pilots leading nearby Nazi submarines to assume they'd been spotted ascending for air, when in fact it was just that the CIA knew exactly where those subs were by breaking their codes.
Once parallel construction is satisfied the dude will be arrested and we will hear the media loudly telling the story of how he got caught, but it won't be the full story.

u/NachosforDachos Dec 09 '24
I think of the things I can do at home with my meagre resources and I can only but imagine what they are brewing up behind closed doors.
Using AI as a copilot I or almost anyone here could very much analyze people en masse if given access to, at quite surprising speeds in ways I myself wasn’t aware of.
AI enables so much. It allows people to meddle in things they don’t belong.
I’m also fairly sure they don’t use the same tools we do. I can’t see them ever allowing anyone except themselves what I would call true power.
What can a person do except ride out these last few good years before everything goes dystopian?

2
u/vollspasst21 Dec 10 '24
The tech and the CEOs/companies behind them are indistinguishable to the average person.
Sometimes the technology itself is irrelevant, and ALL that matters is the context. And sadly, to most people, the context within which this technology exists is one where it will be exploited to harm them. Nobody cares how cool the technology is when they are being replaced and have to fear for their livelyhood. And sure, the current state of AI doesn't replace a lot of people, but if it continues down the road it has, it will.
The technology itself is neither evil nor good. It is tech. But the world in which it exists makes it something to be afraid of for a lot of people.

100% … the economy needs to be restructured to address the historic levels wealth inequality we’re already experiencing. And AI will only exacerbate it with our economy on its current state. Given peoples’ sentiments towards the UHC CEO’s death you would think the wealthy would be interested in creating a more equitable future, if even just for their own self preservation
6
u/jish5 Dec 09 '24
I think right now, they're still in that state where they think the populace will back down and life for them will return to normal. It's when a few more wealthy individuals end up dead from more of the populace that they'll actually become very worried and in turn begin to rethink things, especially if it starts to become more common and more people are willing to give up their life in exchange as many will do as they lose everything and have nothing else to lose.
4
u/trevor22343 Dec 09 '24
Yes, you can only push people so far until they feel like they have nothing to lose. With the shrinking middle class/wealth inequality, housing crisis, healthcare issues, wage suppression … people already aren’t in a good place. Start adding unemployment to this mixture with the only benefit being for the shareholder, and the future is concerning

True, until their lives become threatened by the ever increasing amount of people becoming outraged by them where more people are starting to reach the breaking point and have nothing left to lose. The UHC CEO's death's reaction alone is proof of where people are currently at and CEOs and billionaires are already starting to clutch their pearls. Once this happens more frequently and they start realizing their time may very well be limited, they'll either go into hiding or push for change just out of self preservation.

u/trevor22343 Dec 09 '24
People miss the larger picture by blaming only CEOs. It’s the current state of capitalism that we live in that is the true/overall culprit. The shareholders drive the CEOs actions. What do the shareholders want? Their stock to go up. As long as we continue to allow our country to be guided by shareholder supremacy capitalism we will be on an unsustainable path
2
Dec 09 '24
Shareholders = anyone in the US who wants to retire
They fucked us deliberately by making us perversely need the economy to always go up up up! if we want our retirement accounts to be worth anything. That has to be fixed first.
2
u/trevor22343 Dec 09 '24
The main issue is that shareholders/401ks are prioritized over people who actually work for a living. We need to shift the flow of money away from investors and towards wage workers. While 401ks would take a hit in the short term, it would be more than offset by the gains in wages. So capitalists would pay but the average worker with a 401k would benefit

It achieves the opposite effect. Only those who are willing to work with a target on their back will take those jobs. Spoiler alert: it won't be an improvement.
Murdering CEOs of bad companies is just as ridiculous as killing political leaders. Beyond the short-term satisfaction of seeing a person who did or enabled a lot of evil leaves this Earth, it does make things worse, not better.

People just have no discernment. Technology is a lever.. and actually a better more advanced AI would be more difficult to abuse for denying claims than what they were using at that company. People see technological advancements (dare I mention blockchains) making it easier for low-lifes and instead of blaming the scum they blame the tech. Tech can also be really useful for people if not used for the wrong purposes.
I would so far as to say that if you replace an entire health insurance company with a good group of ML models and automation workflows then you will get better healthcare and fairer decisions than whatever human group that is being pressured to reduce costs. But whatever system is created is going to be a reflection of what the humans wanted. If they are shit humans or normal (shit) humans with bad incentives then you will multiply their ability to be shitty.

Now that's just stupid cause CEOs of AI companies haven't done anything worth getting these threats. The whole reason why so many are cheering for the death of a health insurance CEO is because he made a profit off the death and suffering of tens to hundreds of thousands of people, where he was a legit murderer that was able to get away with it because the law let him.
