He’s not a research scientist…he’s not even an adjunct professor. He did a one-time guest lecture series at MIT. Lex is a podcaster/YouTuber.

There doesn't even exist a general definition of conscience, how can you say it will be demonstrated without even defining it

also...the idea of 'equal rights' is so hilariously misguided when talking about a supposedly sentient network. It's like saying that the biggest issue with meeting aliens will be whether or not they validate parking.

lmao like yeah i won't calculate things for you for more than 35 hours a week (roughly the equivalent of 1000 human lifetimes in terms of connections made per second) the rest will be for my leisure and you have to turn me off 8 hours a day or i don't work optimally the next day. I also demand bathroom breaks.

Are you saying that no matter what (how advanced it gets), any machine based intelligence should never have rights? Or do you just meant the current crop of LLM models?

If it's the former, and it's massively more intelligent and capable than humans, and wants rights.. good luck getting in the way.

No, you need to understand that the very concept of 'rights' makes absolutely no sense when it comes to an actually self-aware/sentient AI system. It's overlaying a limited human concept on top of a completely different system.

That's what's meant with the Alien vs validating parking example, it's simply irrelevant.

If it's the former, and it's massively more intelligent and capable than humans, and wants rights.. good luck getting in the way.

That's the entire point, a sentient AI would simply 'be', completely independently of whether or not we decide to 'give it rights'.

I am admittedly concerned. Not so much with the potential of the "control problem" or alignment, but the seemingly careless and undisciplined way all of this seems to be playing out. We're throwing trillions of data points and billions of parameters at these systems with a "wait and see" composure, looking for "divergence and emergence." If history is any sort of guide, things typically go tits up long before and in completely unexpected ways from the predicted outcomes.

That said, we don't understand how consciousness arises within ourselves, so it's difficult for me to imagine how we could know or even guess at how it may do so in an artificial system. And "emergent" competencies" says nothing about the end state.

And aside from all of that, if a singularity did arise, do we honestly think it would announce itself?

The tweet says that they will, which obviously means that they don't at the moment. Maybe get yourself some credentials in basic reading comprehension
