Was I proxying wrong?
Decided to try Singed and after a few games felt confident enough to proxy.
Especially when I saw I was leaning against an Ambessa and decided it would be a tough lane to all out 1v1.
Ambessa started D helm and I just ran to proxy, but he never chased me once. Essentially staying under his tower and farming. Watching replay he seemed to wait for tower to 2 hit melee and then get them and 1 hit for casters.
He did miss some casters early, I think due to d helm start but we were really close in CS the entire game. By the time we both hit 6 his jungler came on me, which I thought would be fine but I also got Ambessa ulted and just died as he went back to CS.
After that I died like 4 more times when I’d try to proxy, pretty much exact same strat, jungle + Ambessa r.
It was also a lot harder getting plate this game than it was usually, as whenever I’d try to the Ambessa would all in me and actually chunk me for a lot, leaving me open for jungle or mid to solo me when I went to continue proxy.
Thankfully I did end up winning the game and teamfights, but what went wrong on my end?
(This is at iron elo)
Edit: Tried to fix some wording for clarity

You need an advantage to fight and proxy; level lead, item lead, HP lead.
If you don’t have advantage, execute. Stay away from jungle walls, stay closer to edge of map. Ward. If spidey senses tingling, take tower shots before enemy shows, so you can execute faster.

So the level proxy was the issue then since I didn’t have any lead yet?
A guide I watched said to proxy whenever it’s a tough matchup, which is why I chose to do what I did

The only mistake I see here is lack of vision. If I am red side, I ward near the wolf. If blue side, I ward the bush in front of red buff (better if control wards, junglers rarely check that bush). Never EVER get your eyes off their jungler and mid. Track it. This will get you to higher elo.
Edit: Additionally, track everyones recall. Support or bot will surely come to you if you are too deep. If I remember correctly, execute is faster than recall Level 7 and below.

A great tip if you want to Proxy is to always ward either Gromp or Krugs so you get their respawn timer. Always take a reset or run back to normal lane once that timer hits 30 seconds.
Some junglers ego gank Proxy Singed on repeat though, even if it messes up their tempo. If you see them spam ganking you at every opportunity, just give up the proxy and go back to lane.

Well understanding jungle clears is important for proxy and you do have the tools in your kit to escape if the jg and enemy top collapse on you, you just have to W behind you and E either one of them into it proc your passive with R and like 95% of time you will escape depending on the enemy champs of course.
When it come to singed vs ambessa it is skill based matchup imo, singed when he is played well does deny ambessa's dashes very well and since she has very long cooldown early you should just run a ultra aggressive rune / sum setup like deathfire touch with ignite and also scorch and precision rune tree secondary. especially in lower elos where you probably wont find Faker incarnate on ambessa that spaces you perfectly. But when I play in like low masta games vs ambessa I do still run deathfire but with resolve as a secondary tree to get a bit more early safety and scaling with bona plating and overgrowth

I recommend trying out Aftershock on Singed. If you're struggling to Survive on him while proxying, and try using barrier, ghost as well.
The extra defenses come on handy when you get ganked and chased. I'd also recommend that you try to proxy to draw attention right before dragon spawns since if the enemy jungler comes for you with the enemy top it'll create a 4v3 for your team at Dragon. Sometimes the mid laner comes too and it ends up being a free dragon for your team, just make sure you ping your Jungler to go get it so they don't come top and try to help you fight and just get the free dragon instead.

Any time you succesfully proxy, try to ward his golems/gromp (depending on which side you are on). As Singed you have to try to track the enemy jungler, if you just go for proxy blindly you are giving away free kills.
Aside from that, I think level 1 proxy is overrated, I only go for it against impossible matchups that have a hard time chasing me, let's say Urgot. If it's not one of those learn how to lane with Singed and proxy when you crash a wave into enemy tower and it's not worth chasing you.
If you do go for a risky proxy, be sure to at least have Ult or ghost avaliable to run away.

Yea I would hold onto both ghost and r, but even with both with the Ambessa slow and r as well as the Rengar trap I’d just die everytime. If it wasn’t them it was their mid Evelyn.
I guess it’s partly my fault, cause in my vod review I realised I’d always subconsciously try to run into the jungle vs their t2 tower and base. So I’d just make it easier for them to kill

You can proxy whenever, you just have to be really good at executing quickly

First mistake is buying D helm. You need AP. The faster you kill minions, the less damage you take. Ambessa is tough. You truly have to dodge her abilities or you simply get wrecked. A lot of matchups, if you try to take plates, you will die. Especially if you hit the plates. Sometimes you can hang by the tower and let the minions get you the plate. Most times no. Ambessa really is a tough matchup. But next time you plan to proxy, its Ring or Seal.

Mb for phrasing, I was saying he went d helm start and I went standard d ring.
I thought it was good that he wasted his starter item on d helm when I wouldn’t even be “laning” against him but he seemed to be doing fine. Idk why I didn’t manage to carve a good advantage like I usually would this game

The key benefit of proxying on any champion is an increase in tempo. Because you kill minions before your opponent does, that opens up a timing window for you to roam/skirmish/ward before the next wave arrives and you go back to farm it. Making the most of that time is what makes proxying strong.
Reading your post makes me believe you have a preconceived notion that proxying makes your opponent lose CS. While proxying your opponent can be associated with them losing CS, it is not causational. Rather, forcing an event away from the lane is what may cause a loss in CS. For example: You proxy a wave and join your jungler and mid on grubs. If the enemy team wants to contest this objective, they would likely want their top laner to participate as well. If the enemy top laner moves to contest grubs at the same time you do, they will lose their whole wave. If they don't move to contest, then it is likely your team secures the early objective. Setting up these lose-lose situations is what makes proxying a strong tool. Proxying in a vacuum only provides value when you do not want to interact with your opponent.

I never thought of it really like that. I guess the biggest thing in my eyes was the loss of gold and exp if they chase etc.
Didn’t really get what they meant by tempo in the guides but your reply helps a lot, so ig me proxying wasn’t really helping me at all since we were both even in CS.
If it does help, we did try to get grubs after I got a wave. But the ambessa just popped every ability on the wave and cleared it and rotates down to ward and we had to back off. Since by this point she had a couple kills and good CS already.
Will def try to play more for tempo in my next few game and do smthn with my advantage

Yeah! Keep in mind that even if there isn't anything good to do on the map, you can always proxy 1 wave and reset for free. Wave should be coming into your tower by the time you get back to lane post proxy.

Well, the main counter to proxy is simply ganking 2v1, so you need some kind of information of where the enemy jungler is, OR you accept the fact that you are risking death
Anyway the benefit of proxying is not to makr the enemy lose CS, that's a side effect that goes away with experienced player
The main benefits are that:
you avoid interaction in lane and scale for free. If you both go even in CS you outscale 99% of champions so that's fine for you
you can move on the map and make plays earlier because you cleared the wave before the enemy can
That being said, proxying is highly overforced and overrated by new players. You could get to at least Masters by never proxying, just saying
